Ndukwe tweaks knee, awaits results of MRI
Thursday, August 07, 2008
GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Bengals strong safety Chinedum Ndukwe has his fingers crossed that the results of an MRI scan on his injured left knee are negative.
Ndukwe crumpled to the turf during practice Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Georgetown College. He said his left knee buckled when he planted his foot, and his foot stuck in the grass field.
"It was not a good feeling," he said.
Writhing in pain, Ndukwe got immediate medical attention, and was taken off the field on a golf cart.
He was back on the sidelines a half-hour later, but coaches and trainers wouldn't let him back on the field.
"He just kind of tweaked his knee and was able to come back, a la Paul Pierce (of the Boston Celtics)," coach Marvin Lewis said.
Total package
Linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald gushed with praise for Keith Rivers.
"The thing that's great with Keith is he's a mature man," FitzGerald said. "You knew coming in he was going to make a quick transition, not just from an athletic standpoint, but with all the things that go with being a first-round pick, being an NFL player and highlight rookie."
Fast lane
FitzGerald and kicker Shayne Graham visited with IndyCar Series race driver Jaime Camara after the morning practice.
Camara, a 27-year-old Brazilian now living in Miami, will compete in the Meijer Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday.
Quick hitters
• Rookie wide receiver Jerome Simpson decelerated after making a nice catch and had the ball stripped away by strong safety Dexter Jackson.
Wide receivers coach Mike Sheppard ripped Simpson for not running hard after the catch. "You did that at Coastal (Carolina)! You don't do that here!" Sheppard screamed.
• Tailback DeDe Dorsey, fully recovered from a pulled hamstring suffered in June minicamp, practiced for the first time at training camp, and fumbled after bursting through the line of scrimmage.
• Rookie wide receiver Travis Brown (hamstring) was waived with an injury settlement.
