BENGALS NOTES

Chad may sit out Bengals' preseason opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Chad Johnson's surgically-repaired right ankle could keep him idle for most, if not all, of the preseason opener at Green Bay on Monday night, Aug. 11.

Johnson, who underwent arthroscopic surgery June 18, has made some spectacular catches in his first week of practice. But he came up limping after a reception Friday, Aug. 8, and took to the sidelines with an ice bag wrapped around his ankle and a cold towel draped over his head.

A short time later, he was standing with teammates and then jogging on the field without pain.

Woman collapses

A woman who collapsed from apparent heat exhaustion after practice was revived, then taken from the stadium on a stretcher by paramedics.

Sitting in the front row of metal bleachers at the 30-yard line of Toyota Stadium, the woman slumped in the 81-degree heat, causing a hush among players and spectators who had been clamoring for autographs at the end of practice. Team and school officials and trainers rushed to the woman's aid, using ice water and cold towels to cool her. She was upright in her seat, drinking water and wiping her face with a cold towel when paramedics arrived.

Numerous players showed their concern by gathering near the chain-link fence in front of her and inquiring about her condition.

Coats of armor

When fullback Daniel Coats made the switch from tight end in the offseason, he had no idea he would land in the lineup this quickly.

With incumbent Jeremi Johnson training under the supervision of strength and conditioning coaches Chip Morton and Ray "Rock" Oliver to reduce his weight, Coats has taken advantage of his opportunity.

"I'm just lucky to be on top right now," Coats said. "I wouldn't say I'm comfortable, but I am more confident. I'm just trying to put everything together. It's going to be good to have an actual show against somebody who's not used to us to see if I can actually do this or not."

Gaines excited

Cornerback Jerrid Gaines, who re-signed Wednesday after being waived July 7, is eager to experience his first NFL action.

"I'm real excited," he said. "I just want to show I can make plays on the ball and be tough in run support."

Jeremi Johnson's daily regimen

5:30 to 6:30 a.m. — Cardiovascular work. "A straight calorie burner," said Chip Morton, Bengals' strength and conditioning coach.

9 to 11 a.m. — Interval training. Calisthenics and strength training.

3 to 5 p.m. — Conditioning circuit, consisting of agility drills in the heat of the day. Examples: Leg lunges uphill, throwing and chasing oversized rubber ball, and pushing the blocking sled.

Quote: "Yes, he's not in great shape. Yes, he's overweight. But both those things are changing. His weight is coming down. He's making good progress and he continues to improve." — Morton
