Chris Henry returns to Bengals

BLOG: Bengals have a lot of explaining to do
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
Beleaguered wide receiver Chris Henry resigned with the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
He'll open the regular season on a four-week NFL suspension after violating the league's Personal Conduct Policy.
Also on Tuesday, the Bengals waived rookie defensive back Jerrid Gaines of Miami, Ohio, and Springfield South High School.
Henry is immediately eligible to begin practicing and also is eligible to play in the final two preseason games. However, during the four-game suspension, he'll not be able to practice.
A fourth-year player, the Bengals released Henry on April 3 after a series of high-profile off-the-field events that resulted in multiple suspensions. The last was an assault charge resulting from a confrontation in Cincinnati that was dropped because of a hung jury.
The league placed Henry on indefinite suspension following the charge and reduced that to four games after the case was dropped.
The West Virginia product has played in 35 games, all with the Bengals. In three seasons he's amassed 88 receptions for 1,370 yards and 17 touchdowns.

I’m pretty sure the team would welcome him back with open arm’s, if can just stay out of trouble. I mean sure, we all make mistakes. But honestly, is it really that hard for him to stay out of that much trouble. Com’ on, he’s too young and talented of a guy to be getting into so much stuff like this on a continous basis. It ain’t so hard to stay out of trouble.

Dear All,
Chris is a great man, despite what had happened in the past… He belongs to a family now that he never had before, a family who possess great values and high standards. I have spoken with Chris seveal times and encourage him to use his talent wisely… I have all the confident in the world that you will see him in a different light. For those of you that look down upon him, I want you to understand that there’s failures in life! Chris will surprise you! Love you little Chris!G

Mike Brown is one apple that fell far from the tree. Coach Brown would not have stood for this. Way to go Bungals. Looks like another loosing season filled with fellons. Thats ok Cincy, at least you have one pro team that can win in the queen city. Too bad no one cares about hockey.
Q: What do you call an eleven man crime ring in the ‘natti?
A: A huddle.
Good luck Bungals. Im one more loosing season closer to blackouts, and being able to watch the Browns on Channel 7.

My problem isn’t that the Bengals signed Henry. It’s after everything they said and showed that despite all their high and mighty comments, they will GLADLY be hypocrites in the name of being a better football team.
As for Henry himself, idiots will be idiots. If you sign a guy like that, be ready for the price that comes with it.

Henry is no more of an embarassment to the bungles than the bungles are themselves. They deserve each other; a low class team with a no class player. Bringing this looser back is a slap in the face to ALL of us who, through the years, spent our money supporting this team and that thief brown.

All I needed to see was Carson “overthrowing” Chatman in the second quarter of the Green Bay game. He is not tall and if he doesn’t have the speed to make plays downfield, he will not be on the roster. Who do the bengals have beside a healthy Glen Holt and TJ not able to run routes and Chad at 85%? The kids they drafted will make the roster, but cannot be expected to contribute. The bengals had to make the move.

Bottom line in pro sports - if you win, nobody really cares how or with what players. If the Bengals employed a bunch of preachers and nuns and went 0-16, it wouldn’t be acceptable. Get some thugs, make the playoffs, all the bad pub is overlooked.
I guess “In Marvin We Trust” no longer applies - Marvin said this wouldn’t happen. I just don’t like the inconsistency of the message. They draw the line in the sand with Ocho, but back the truck up on this one. Don’t like it.

Just one more example of why I don’t support or attend professional (multi-millionaire) sporting events anymore. They have no principles, and don’t even try to reflect traditional community values. Just get down to roll around in the mud, blood, drugs and money with everyone else. On the other hand, who knows, the Bengals may even win a game or two. When push comes to shove, let’s just cave in, again, and then wonder and complain about why young people are starving for role models….ha!!

My concern with the rehiring of Chris Henry (and I am a WV fan and was happy when he came to Cincinnati) is that I haven’t read anywhere where he is quoted as saying things like” I am sorry for the wrong things I did” or “I know I was wrong” or “I will make a commitment to better represent myself the Bengals and the NFL”.There seems to be little personal commitment, remorse or resolve to be a better member of society…a society that is safer or not depending on the act of us all.

Every year I hear the Bengals are going to be better and make the playoffs, every year they suck. At least Lewis had instilled some class into that organization. The Bengals have sucked forever and the fans are still loyal so winning obviously isn’t everything, stop using that as an excuse (a #3 wideout will not get you to the playoffs). At least try to put a team with some dignity on the field that a Browns fan like me could even think about cheering for to beat the Steelers or the Ravens.

Jim Jones, Henry has had a second..and third and fourth chance. He is way past second chances. People do make mistakes, but when they start making 6-7 mistakes, you have to realize they can not live up to the standards of an NFL player. Mark, you have to realize that the NFL does not suspend people based upon guilt or innocence in court room, they do their own investigations. If you want to argue thats unfair, then thats fine, but dont mistake a mistrial with being innocent.

Personally think the guy has outstanding talent and all he does is catch touchdowns when he plays. His off the field antics are more than questionable. But as one previous person posted, if PacMan and all his strip club thugs can come back after repeated violations, shouldn’t Chris Henry be afforded that same opportunity. The Bengals did the right thing, they needed to nip the situation in the bud, (release Henry) and resign him if he is found innocent, he is too good of a talent to let get go

They are the laughing stock because they suck and have sucked since 1988 or 89 who cares and they are a losing organization thats why they are a laughing stock! Marvin Lewis have brought some respect back to the organization as far as winning some ball games he is one of the best coaches they have had!

You people are just about all idiots. Crusification by the media and you believe every word of it. Doug has the best post, it is a business and it is about winning. Henry was not convicted of the crime and the NFL has still seen fit to cast its unfair judgement, much the same as they did with Thurman. But you see a thug (as the media says) like Pacman Jones go to Dallas, and all of a sudden the NFL forgets his regressions and he is allowed to play. Sounds like double standards to me.

There is a reason why the Bungles continue to be the laughingstock of the league. While you would like to give people the benefit, he is not one of them. While yes the charges were dropped, an incident did take place. Although the good news for some bungle fans, this will be the last year of Marvin Lewis, as clearly he is not in charge anymore. As a non-fan, I would rather see Lewis continue to coach the team.

Yes, I think the Bengals should bring back Chris Henry. They should also try and go get Charles Manson & Osama Bin Laden. The Bengals need help at wide receiver and Osama & Manson could be the threat they need to put fear into DB’s minds. Chris Henry could bring the underage girls & alcohol for Charlie & bring the weapons & ammunition that Obama needs to blow by the DB’s. The Bengals also should pay both Charlie & Obama about $5 million a year for being such great citizens like Chris Henry has.

Well as a season ticket holder I must say this is the worst thing you can do to a team that finally got on the right track. Why would you do this? I know this guy is talented but this is what the team wants to get away from. I work with a lot of people that hear that Marvin does not want him and has told Mike Brown he will walk if this happens. I also think one guy will not make your team a contender. I for some reason hope he gets arrested again just to see Mr.Brown look more like an idiot!!!!!

I know a young man that was at the party in clifton that led to Chris Henry’s release and he stated that he told the officers that he never saw him there. The Bengals made a mistake when they released him without knowing all the facts. He was not convicted of any crime even though it went to trial. So if you think about it in those terms he is the victim in this case because he got a 4 game suspension for no reason.

Doug, great post buddy! The rest of you people need to understand that this is a business first. The Bengals have been plagued with injuries the past few years when we should have been playoff contenders. Nothing to do about it but move forward. Chris Henry may be a punk but he has great hands and we need a deep threat receiver if we want to vie for a playoff spot this year. If you fair weather fans don’t understand that go jump on another bandwagon - we only need real fans.

Some of you guys need to stop and think. If you are so willing to “sell your souls” to bring back an athlete who has repeatedly showed a lack of respect for anyone else, to win a couple of ballgames, I ask the following. Where will you be after you have done this and you do not obtain what you so badly desire? Re-sigining Chris Henry will not in itself get the bengals to the playoffs. They only went once before with him. You need to think about the longterm makeup of your team.

Well…. I think it is a shame we have to resort to bringing someone back who has been suspended numerous times and fined. I think we should be able to find some help in the minors to cover the short time the others are injured. Chris Henry already has to sit the first 4 games, TJ and Chad should be healthy by then or other the players stepping up may find a home.

Nope- how many chances does a young person get nowadays? Where is the discipline on this team and in society? Will we see Odell Thurmon next? Marvin Lewis and Mikey Boy Brown, by establishing the idea that they were going to clean up this team and then resigning a player that was cut for bad character, gives them absolutely no credibility at all. Flea market team/sleezy- in the gutter team management.

I doubt he had any money left, to pay anybody off. Players like Henry, who seem to get in a lot of trouble, are not rocket scientist’s and seem to have to learn everything the hard way. He has hit rock bottom and hopefully has learned a lesson in life. If he screws up again, after all these chances, then he will get what he deserves.

At this point, I don’t care if the Bengals go out & pick up a team from the prison exercise field. Henry & Palmer are good together. This whole role model thing is completely overblown. Kids are playing realistic games where they blow people away & more than one government leader-type has been exposed for worse things in the last year than Henry’s misdemeanors. Henry just wants to play. Perhaps if the other players would stop worrying so much about getting the most money or getting traded…

I know this, living in Cincinnati, and having been a fan since 79, I am sick of paying my stadium tax, and paying for losing…again this is Football, pro-sports, and if your not winning, you are almost garaunteed to lose money, which is definitely the bottom line. So, your either support the organization on the 50 or so other members of the team who are upstanding members of the communtiy, or, remain on your high-horse, and continue to chastize and condem!

I completely support the Bengals and the resigning of Chris Henry. It is a real need for the team and shows a legitimate commitment to winning by the front office.
Chris will be gone instantly if he makes another mistake and I will support that move every bit as much as I support him being resigned. Mike Brown said that he was a redeemer and I for one understand it may not work out that way, but look forward to the chance that it might.
Chris Henry keeps his act clean, performs on the field and contributes to a successful season, then attitudes towards him will soften. The front office has to have this long term view in mind with this resigning.
The down side is if we don’t resign Chris and Chad isn’t able to play that we don’t have a down field threat and the offense suffers and we lose games. The way we vote is ultimately with our dollars and people don’t want to pay to watch a loser.
I know some will respond by saying, I won’t buy tickets any more because I am so disgusted with them brining back Chris Henry. The truth is if the Bengals are winning, someone else will gladly buy your tickets. The other side is ticket sales can absolutely drop off with a losing season. I think the Bengals rightfully understand the market and that they need to fear a losing season much more than resigning Chris Henry.
The Bengals do have high character guy’s on the roster. Willie Anderson, Carson Palmer, Andrew Whitworth, Domato Peko, John Thornton, Chindum Ndukwe, Keith Rivers, Corey Lynch, Rudi Johnson yet these good men go unnoticed for their good deeds and people think Chris Henry is the Bengals. The Bengals deserve much more credit for the character of their current roster, even with the addition of Chris Henry than is being given.

Perhaps Richard is a defense lawyer. One of those people that tell lies about their criminal clients so that they can go free. Ah, I get it, Richard wants to work for the Bengals!

I am reading a lot of negative comments here. It sounds like the Cleveland Brownstains and the Pissburg Squeeler fans are getting scared :)

15 has some incredible talent, and nobody wants to see him playing for another team! maybe this time he has finally learned his lesson?it’s too bad he’s already -4 games this season. ole dude could easily be a pro-bowler if he would stay out of trouble long enough to play all 16 games some season.

Richard! Wake up dude! You say he was wrongfully convicted of the last crime! Have you ever heard of paying off people to drop charges? It happens every day! Wake up dude!

If and when Henry scores a touchdown, any fan that cheers him needs to seek professional help!

Henry was wrongly convicted of the last crime and was on the team when it happened and should be brought back, but he needs to know that if you have a target on your back, you don’t go where you can be shot at. In other words stay away from the bars and places that bring these troubles on.

Are you kidding me? What a horrible decision. If I hadn’t already, I’ve lost all respect for the Bengals organization and Marvin Lewis.

Marvin Lewis questioned whether Chad Johnson was a man of his word when Johnson talked about sitting out the season. Now we have to question whether Marvin Lewis is a man of his word when he said that he didn’t want Chris Henry on this team!

I am surpised that this team hasn’t made trades for Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones, and Terrell Owens. They would fit this team perfectly.

If you call yourself a Bengals’ fan and can look at yourself in the mirror this morning, I have some swamp land in Louisiana that I want to sell you.

This team was bad before they rid themselves of some of the criminals. Then they became an awful team. The Bengals have already stooped as low as they can so bringing back this clown doesn’t change my thoughts of this team. They are awful either with him or without him!
