Five reasons Bengals must win
After Sunday's game against Titans, three of Cincinnati's next four games are on road.
COMMENT: Will the Bengals beat the Titans?
Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Five reasons why the Cincinnati Bengals' home opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday is a "must-win" situation:
1. The Bengals can't afford to be 0-2 with three of the next four games on the road.
They travel to the New York Giants (Sept. 21), host Cleveland (Sept. 28), then visit the Dallas Cowboys (Oct. 5) and New York Jets (Oct. 12).
The Pittsburgh Steelers pay a visit to Cincinnati on Oct. 19. The Bengals could be 2-5 or worse by their Oct. 26 bye.
A triumph over Tennessee won't come easy. The Titans seek revenge after absorbing a 35-6 beating in Cincinnati a year ago — the Bengals' most lopsided victory of 2007.
2. Although it's possible, the odds of winning the Super Bowl after an 0-2 start are remote.
Only three teams in NFL history have accomplished the feat — the 1993 Dallas Cowboys; the 2001 New England Patriots and the 2007 New York Giants.
3. The Bengals have reached the postseason eight times in 40 seasons — 1970, '73, '75, '81, '82, '88, '90 and 2005. None of those teams began the season 0-2.
4. The Bengals' best home record in five previous seasons under head coach Marvin Lewis is 5-3 (four times). The team was 4-4 at home in 2006.
In the face of a brutal road schedule, the Bengals must do a better job of defending the FieldTurf in "The Jungle" at Paul Brown Stadium in order to have a chance at the AFC North Division title.
5. Tennessee let defensive tackle John Thornton (2003) and defensive end Antwan Odom (2008) go to free agency, and they signed with Cincinnati.
The pressure's on both players to prove Titans head coach Jeff Fisher made a mistake. No player wants the indignity or embarrassment of losing to his former club.

defense did alright, but you forgot that end around also that they got torched on,, and another disturbing thought,,, we ran lots of blitzes and still could not get to flacco,, i mean hes never played a nfl game and we couldnt even make him turn the ball over, even after reapeted blitzing

The Bengals could have crushed the Ravens if the coaches understood that that was all they needed to do was go into a hurry up offense and change the tempo of the game. Letting the defense dictate was their downfall, remember the Bengals defense outscored the offense 7-3 in that game so the defense did their job for the most part except for that Flacco run. Brown still step down PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and one more thing,, marvin lewis PLZ stop handing out our time outs like their halloween candy!!!against the ravens you burnt our last timeout in the 4th when their was 10 secs left b4 the 2 min warning. and plz do not run chris perry up the middle on 4th and short, PERRY IS NOT A POWER BACK!!!!!a pee wee coach could make better decisions. oh someone inform chris perry and ben utech to learn how to pick up a blitz, if carson cant throw, we will not get first downs, let alone score!!

now for the offense, couple years ago we let E steinbach go to the browns, (dummy move) we still have yet to replace R braham with a decent center, and now we let willie go, and to a divisional foe at that!!! letting rudi go was also stupid, we should have at least let him play a couple games to see if he had gotten back to 05 form, now our starter is an injury prone back who has not shown me nothing so far, id rather kenny watson start than chris perry.somebody plz give carson time to throw!!!

can we say sorry head coach, and poor personnel management? lets get rid of justin smith,, lets get rid of deltha oneal now we have j joseph and l hall at corner and those 2 get burnt ever other play like toast. and if one of them goes down we have rookie backups,, oh yeah lets cut odell thurman cause he missed practice when his grandma died,, even though he made pro-bowl as a rookie, how are these moves helping our D?

I just got done reading everyone’s comments that were written on this page. And I agree with everyone that says changes need to be made. I have been a Bengal fan my whole life too. I endured the 13 straight losing season’s like most of us. I was born in Ohio, but live in Texas now. I hate the Cowboys, but if the Bengal’s want to continue their losing ways…….I’ve had it!! If the Bengal’s don’t come out with at least a 9-7 record this season, I AM DONE WITH THEM!!

The franchise should withdraw from the NFL and join the semi-pro league where they may win half their games. Mike Brown sell now, unfortunately you still may get some profit from destroying a once proud franchise.
The coaching staff may be hired by a division III college, if they are lucky.

I listed to all the player and coach interviews after the Raven game. The excuse we get is that is only one game and there are 15 more to go.
The entire team and coaching staff misses the friggin point:
It is all about how you prepare yourself for a game. If they do the same in the Titan game like they did the Raven game they are going to take an a*s kicken by the Titans. The Titans are a lot better team than the Ravens.

Who cares who wins when they are paid millions and could care less about their home town or even their self pride? If you want to enjoy watching someone who actually care about whether they win or lose, go watch your local soccer and football teams play this fall - the atmosphere is better, parking is easier and the cost is well, just about nill compared to wasting half a day going to Cincy and back. See you on Friday night?

If you read my post you will note I thought a coaching change is in order. This team just does not appear to have the disclipine it takes to consistently win! Do you honestly think Bill Cowher, a Bill Parcels, or a Jimmy Johnson would allow such crappy play go on and on? The defense still is tackling like a bunch of sissies! I saw in the Ravens game where one Bengal linebacker actually jumped out and stuck his hand out to try to trip Flaco up on that big running play!

It’s ironic that the Bengals and Reds are in the same boat. Lots of talent and poor leadership. I’ve always liked Marvin as a person but not as a head coach. The Bengals don’t want to play for him. The team doesn’t have a personality. They can’t get motivated. They refuse to follow basic football strategies, meaning they won’t establish a running game. Everyone knows that when the offense gets into the red zone they’ll pass pass pass. At least we’ll have the #1 draft pick again.

The Bengals are hurting. This is the worst I have ever seen them this early in the season. As a life long Bengal fan, I am suring but I see no end in sight. This is the start of the season, but I see nothing that gives me any hope for the future. I was very disappointed that the cut Big Willie. He was their best offensive lineman up until last year when he was hurt. The line this year looks lost! I just don’t think that they have the tools to correct all the problems that they have now…

What a pantload. We wll be 0-7 by the time we hit our by-week. You cant win a single game without a good O-line or D-line and ours just plain stinks.

That statement about the Bengals being one of the most talented teams in the NFL was absolutely ludicrous. You may want to see if you can find a way to recall that e-mail post so you can make sure your name is not associated with such a statement.
I can now die happy because I have now heard it all!!!

You are a loyal Bengals fan and that is good. Perhaps you would feel better if you had a more realistic opinion of the Bengals. If they were one of the most talented teams in the NFL atleast a few other people on the Planet Earth would agree with you and we would know of these other people by now!
They have a talented offense that is now in year 3 of futility and gross underachievement! One may even say….maybe this is not, after all, one of the most talented offenses in the AFC!

It is all about disclipine, preparation, and constantly coaching the fundamentals:
Sound hard nose tackling (hitting and wrapping up the football)
Learning how to always carry the football with both hands craddled on ball!
Basics of 101 hard nose blocking and knowing your assignment!
Play smash mouth football!
This to me was non existent last week. The Bengals lost to the Ravens because they were not prepared to play! This is a coaching problem!

Lastly, it appears that the Bengals will have to find a way to “flip a switch” on and suddenly play as a talented group on offense! The problem here is that things do not usually happen that way….”switches do not normally just magically flip on”. Maybe the offense can do it, but although I want it to happen, I just can’t see it. Neither can Vegas…they have Titans by 2 with an over/under of 37.5. 30 of those points are probably going to be in the Titans column.

The Bengals are one of the most talented teams in the league. They have got a bunch of talented and gifted players in the league.
It is just a matter of putting this talent together and putting it to good use on the field.
I think a coaching change is in order!

Furthermore, I can already see Chris Johnson “streaking” through the Bengals defense on more than 1 occasion. This little dude is simply “electrifying”! The Bengals offense better get a clue by Sunday or it may be a bloodbath in the Jungle with Bengals blood spilled. The Bengals need to look sharper on offense then the Washington Redskins! Carson what has happened? Granted, the Ravens D is good but come on! By the way, I’m a Bengals fan, but I’m also a “Realist”.

If Bengals fans think they are going to get a break this week with the Titans they are fooling themselves! The Titans defense is equal to if not better than the Ravens. Furthermore the Titans offense is more potent than the “Rookie” led Ravens. The Bengals look to have reverted back to the “Bungels” despite having much talent on offense. If they do not play better versus the Titans than they did against the Ravens they will be blown off their own field to a house of deafening “Boos”!!

dippel i agree with you in most stuff, like gettin alexander he already said to the press that he “is’nt worried about the money and just wants to play”.. and they should have never gotten rid of their best O lineman.. and defense of course they need help.. but in the nfl there is salary caps and you just cant have the best offense AND defense

I sent that letter via fax to Mike Brown because I wanted to give him a little wake up call! This team needs to wake up before it is too late. The reason why I care so much because I love the Bengals and I hate to see them lose. I feel there is problems in Cincy that go well beyond the players. If anyone of you in Bengal land want to email at krf28472@yahoo.com to discuss the Bengals feel free to do so. I did not mean to offend any Bengal fan in my post! But, I am sick of seeing them lose!

I guarantee you will not see the type play that was exhibited last Sunday in the Ravens game by the Steelers!
This Bengal team clearly was not prepared to play! This is a coaching problem and also ownership problem. Mike Brown always wants to put on the field youth! When is he going to stop the damn rebuilding and start focusing on winning now? The damn future does not mean squat if you cannot win now!
I am hoping I see different results in the Titan game!

I am not wanting to win the spelling bee contest. I have always been a Bengal fan and I am pissed off because I believe this team has all the talent in this world.
It lakes the leadership to win consistently and to be a true winner! I frigging hate to see them lose! I have been a Bengal fan for over 33 years! So, do not tell me I am not a true Bengal fan!
The ownership and coaches need a wake up call!

From: Ken Dippel 4931 Forest Drive Loris, SC 29569 (843) 333-2513
Attention: Mike Brown, Owner of the Bengals
As a Bengals fan I am totally ashamed of the team that has been put on the field the past few years. The opener against the Baltimore Ravens was a total disgrace. The Bengal team that was on that field for the Ravens game looked like a bunch of Powder Puff girl football players. They could not even beat a high school football team. There was no effort at all put into winning this game by the Bengal players. These are suppose to be paid athletes who are suppose to lay it on the line every Sunday and to give 100 percent each and every day. Many are getting paid millions of dollars to do this. Yet, they forgot they were obligated to play like NFL professional football players. They forgot how to block and tackle.
Last Sunday we saw an offensive line that looked like it could not block an 81 year old woman in a wheelchair. Many players looked like they did not have a clue where they were. Many showed no concern that they were actually on an NFL playing field. We saw on the defensive side of the ball players who missed tackles and who allowed a rookie quarterback to streak down the field 20 to 25 yards! My grandmother could have gotten down field and picked up a first down on this defense. This should have never happened! The defense still tackles like a bunch of PEE WEE HERMITS jumping on the back of an elephant!
The team was a total disgrace to all Bengal fans and to the Cincinnati community. I blame the coaches and you as the owner for this! The players and coaches should be ashamed of themselves. They call themselves NFL players and coaches. I have seen better coaching in a Pop Warner football game. At least there coaches are teaching the kids the fundamental basics of football. Where are the basics in Cinncinati? You still got defensive players who are trying to tackle the other teams’ players by jumping on their back. It is a disgrace!
Mr. Brown, we Bengal fans deserve better. It is your job as the owner of the team to put together the best possible players to give the city of Cincinnati and Bengal fans a winning team. For the past several years there has been only one winning season in Cinncinati. It was that season the Bengals went to the playoffs. Since that time I have seen this team steadily go down the toilet thanks to the misguided player personnel decisions you have made!
Never before has the Bengals in their history had a strong defense to count on to win football games and to make the big plays when it counted the most. Mr. Brown you have made terrible moves. You continue to make numerous blunders when it comes to making decisions on players and even coaches. You spent this years draft on bringing in mostly new offensive players when there were major problems on the defense which should have been fixed first. You got rid of Willie Anderson who was perhaps the best offensive lineman in the NFL. You sent Rudi Johnson packing and now there is no dependable running back in the Bengals backfield. The team is now in need of a high caliber running back. Shawn Alexander is out there. Yet, you have made no move to bring him in and sign him. After this year Albert Haynesworth, Julius Peppers, and even Ray Lewis will be free agents. If you have any desire to ever win you should try to get one of these players in a Bengal uniform.
I now understand why Chad Johnson wanted out of Cincinnati. Your blunder decisions are now showing up on the field. Your poor management skills and player relation skills are producing a losing team that is a total disgrace to the NFL and to Cinncinati fans. The Bengals are now being called the Bungals!
Where is your desire to win? Why have you not focused in on fixing this girlish defense? What about the offensive line that looks like a wet sack of crap! The defense still looks like a bunch of PEE WEE football tacklers who have not learned the basics of 101 tackling (hit and wrap them up). The so called Jurassic Line looks like they forgot their job as professional NFL offensive lineman is to block and to knock the other teams’ defensive players off their arses!
Where is your pride Mike Brown? Your father would be totally ashamed of you. You have taken what your father had built into a respectful franchise and have continually run the entire Bengal organization into the dump! You should be ashamed of yourself! You as an owner are a disgrace to the NFL and to Cinncinati fans!
I blame you, Marvin Lewis, and the entire coaching staff for producing a half hearted gutless football team. It is the coaching staffs’ job to get the players ready for the game to play on game day. It is your job as an owner to be committed to putting on the field the best players who have the desire to win and who will give 150 percent each and every day to win. Players should be willing to do everything to win and if they do not win should be dying trying to win. Moreover, it is your job and the coaches job to create a winning atmosphere and to install a program that thrives on discipline. Where is the heart to win in Cinncinati? Where is the coaching? We need a Vince Lombardi type atmosphere and coach in Cincinnati!
“Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate”.
“The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual”.
“The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand”.
These are the words of Vince Lombardi in which you should think about. Last Sunday I watched in outrage to see a Bengal team that totally stunk! Maybe you should talk to Jerry Jones and ask him how he always seems to put together a winning football team. Ask him what it takes to be a winner. Mr. Brown deep in your heart I think you know Bengal fans deserve better than what is on the field now. Please bring in a new head coach (Bill Cowher) and a new offensive coordinator who is a hard nosed disciplinary. Please stop giving up on our best players and stop just giving them away free to teams like the Ravens. The last game against the Ravens was a first class joke. You should be ashamed of yourself. I doubt seriously if your father were around today he would be running the Bengal team into the ground like you are doing.
We Bungal fans demand change so we can look up and say proudly once again someday we are proud to be the Bengals! As a lifelong Bengal fan I just want to see them win and if they do not win I want to see the players and coaches giving everything to win.
Respectfully,
Ken Dippel, Bengal Fan

calm down.. first off pre-season dont mean anything… second, if carson wants to do somethin in the nfl he needs to have someone like chad and tj as his receivers!! the only thing this game will come down to is if carson’s line can give him a couple seconds to find the open receiver and that’s all he needs..
