Palmer wanted to play

His elbow was hurt on a sack vs. Giants

CINCINNATI — Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer wanted to play. But Bengals' doctors, trainers and coach Marvin Lewis said no.

"Carson has an elbow that's inflamed," Lewis said after the Bengals' 20-12 loss to Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 28. "We'll evaluate where he is on Wednesday and see.

"This was the best thing to do for him long term — to not play. He and I talked about it late (Saturday) night. He's tough. He wanted to play very badly."

Is it difficult to think "long term" when your club is winless?

"It's not tough," Lewis added. "He's got a long time ahead of him. It was the best thing. Hopefully, we'll have him back and ready to go next week."

'Third' quarterback

Palmer, whose photo adorned the cover of Sunday's game program, was the designated third quarterback behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jordan Palmer.

He said his elbow bothered him on Wednesday and Thursday in practice.

"The decision was close to being made on Thursday," Palmer said. "It was going to be a game-time decision. They just decided it wasn't right to play."

Hurt vs. Giants

Palmer was hurt in the first quarter at New York when he was sacked by cornerback Corey Webster.

"It happens a lot," he said. "You're getting ready to throw and somebody grabs your arm as you're getting ready to go forward with the ball and with the arm."

Weirdest play

Sunday's strangest play came in at 2:48 of the second quarter when Browns cornerback Eric Wright intercepted Fitzpatrick, ran 23 yards to midfield, then fumbled on a hit by Bengals tailback Chris Perry that wideout Chad Ocho Cinco recovered.

Shayne Graham's 45-yard field goal at 0:08 gave the Bengals a 6-3 halftime lead that stood until the fourth quarter.

Same old, same old

Lewis said he's getting tired of conducting news conference after losses.

"Every time we lose, I'm tired of saying what I have to say," he said. "I'd rather come in here and say a lot less by winning. I'm going to get tired of listening to (the criticism), too, so we're going to get it fixed."

Quick hitters

• Bengals cornerback Leon Hall contained Browns wideout Braylon Edwards (3 catches, 22 yards). But one was a 4-yard TD.

• The Bengals are one of four teams still searching for their first victory. The others are St. Louis, Detroit and Houston.

• "We've got to find a way. We've got to figure it out. We've got to dig out of this hole." — Bengals left tackle Levi Jones
