Lay it on the line: Bengals a tough team to love

By Jim Morris

Here are a few points to ponder as you slurp your coffee and munch your cinnamon roll this morning ...

About six weeks ago, I'm the guy who wrote in this space that the Bengals' season was over.

That prediction was followed by a 50-50 response via e-mail, about half in agreement and the other half calling me some names with bad words in them.

One even accused me of being a Browns fan. That's the one that hurt.

The thing is, I have always been a Bengals fan. I covered the team's first home game at Nippert Stadium in 1968 and have rooted for the Stripes ever since.

The problem is, the Bengals make it difficult to be a fan. To some, being a team's fan means no matter what happens, you support the club, win or lose.

However, I think it's one thing to root for a team and quite another to support the bad management that has turned the club into a perennial loser.

How Bengals management cannot see the obvious shortcomings in this team's offensive and defensive lines is beyond me. You can have great skill players, but if the O-line can't block and the D-line can't pressure the other team's quarterback, you don't have a very good chance of winning.

The Bengals don't have a running game and the team's starting quarterback has been knocked out, perhaps for the season. What does that say about the offensive line?

It says the Bengals can't beat anybody.

I hope the ghosts of “Seasons Past” visit Mike Brown some night and change his heartless ways from scrooge to winner.

I am not renewing my seasons tickets. Not because I don’t love my Bengals with all of my heart and soul, its just the right thing to do. If we stay away, Brown is hit in the pockets and he must then be forced to make decisions that benefit the team instead of being aloof. He should be ashamed of what he has done to this city and its fans over the years. Will his daughter be any better? I pray that they sell the team after he steps down. They do not care about the city or its fans. Bob Johnson 54

Bengals need to get a real GM Mike Brown should step down. Hamiltion county done it part to bring a gorgeous stadium on of the nicest in the league and it is a shame that the team does not match the stadium. we need an offensive line and defensive line both. hey mike wake out protect the quarterback palmer is one of the best in the league if he stays healthy thats starts with a good offesive line. running back fumble when they are not protected hmmmmmmmm food for thought

The Bengals are “perennial losers” for one reason “Mike Brown”. He is the only common factor in all the depressingly losing seasons. Sell the team Mike and let somebody with real football sense put a “perennial winner” on the field. Simple as that, but hard to admit!

It is not fair to call Bengals fans who are ready to give up “fair weather fans”. Fair weather fans give up after 1-2 bad seasons. We have had 20 years of failure. Giving up on such a team is not fair weather, it is smart

I have been a Bengals fan my whole life. I moved away from Ohio about 3 years ago and it’s been hard to watch them. But it’s not like i’ve missed anything. It’s just not that fun to root for the Bengals anymore. At least other bad teams try to get better. Our window is already closed, and it closed air tight! I still want the bengals to do well, but they are making it easier and easier to put them behind me.

In these tough economimc times Mike Brown is thinking of the fans. How you ask?

You’ll save money by not buying any more gear. No spending money on hats, tshirts, jackets, etc. I know I will have more money around xmas than I did in 05 when I spent every spare dime I had on AFCN champions gear, and a playoff ticket.

You said it 100% correctly! A fan is not doing their job by supporting an ownership that cares only about MONEY, and not wins. Why waste your time. Its the morons that keep going to the stadium year in and year out lining Mike Brown’s pockets full of cash. WHY? Doesn’t make any sense to me either.

Quit supporting this team (financially) until Mike Brown fields a team of winners!!!

I have been a Cincinnati fan(Bengals,Reds,Bear Cats) all my life. Living in Dallas I don’t always get the inside scoop, but one thing is for sure and that is that Cincinnati is a great sports town with great fans that deserve more. The Bengals have been a laughing stock too long, Mike Brown and Marvin both need to step down. The team needs a true football person as a GM to run the club and sad to say the Marvin experiment has not faired very well. At least the Reds future is looking bright.

I was USAF stationed in England in 1960 when Paul Brown started assembling the Bengals. Being from Southern Ohio, I read everything I could in the Stars and Stripes about them. I have for 48 yrs faithfully followed them through all those losing yrs and 2 Superbowls. Now someone in the local media finally has the fortitude to speak the truth as to the cause of the losing seasons for the Bengals, “MIKE BROWN”!!!

The future looks bleak for a long time. Even when Mike Brown steps down (he is 71), he will likely give control to his daughter, Katie.

All:

I love the Bengals.

This all proves that Bengal fans are fair-weather fans. Many have probably (as usual) abandoned them to root for the Steelers now. We Browns fans root for our team no matter how bad they are-and they are this year. No terrible towels for me. Move the Bengals to Los Angeles as they have no team and might support them better than Cincinnatians do.

I disagree. The offensive line has been serviceable even with the pigheaded release of Willie Anderson. The defensive line—in fact the entire defense—has played better than anyone expected. This mess is mostly on the skill players. The overwhelmed backup QB who can’t get the ball out on time, the running back who keeps fumbling, the wide receivers who take plays off and get called for dumb penalties, and the punter who gives the opposing offense an endless string of short fields.

If Mike Brown only ran his organization like 99%of all others (putting football oriented minds in the front office) the Bengals could be a competitive team. It continues to get easier to not watch any of their games and not buy their mercandise.

Do you really want to know a true football fan, and not someone who hops on a bandwagon? My favorite NFL team is the Bengals. Due to my ties to Michigan, I also love the Lions. I am a Michigan grad, and a Stebbins HS grad. I will not jump ship from any of my teams. But, as far as I know, my four teams are a collective 2wins and a lot of losses. Sometimes, expecting to lose makes the rare win a good one. Keep sports in perspective. By the way, a bad Mich team will again derail OSU’s dream.

There is a center available Alex Mack from California that would be the perfect pick for the Bengals. Probably could trade down to 15 to get him and another pick for another lineman. Lineman needed on both sides of the ball. First 6 picks. Talking about the draft after 7 games, I feel like an addict.

WE THE FANS WANT WINS.MIKE WON’T GIVE THEM TO US. MIKE WANT’S YOUR MONEY, DON’T GIVE IT TO HIM. WHEN THE MONEY DRIES UP MIKE WILL GIVE US WINS. IT’S TINE TO GET THE KITTYS OFF THE FIELD AND GET THE BENGALS BACK. HAMILTON COUNTY SPENT LOTS OF MONEY TO KEEP TRASH IN A NEW STADIUM, FANS CLEAN IT UP!

Sadly, I can no longer love the Bengals. A fan is just that - fanatical about their team. I lost my unbridled support of this Franch in the 3rd quarter of the Arizona game last year. I will always have a soft spot for the franchise as it was my team growing up. I wore the jersey and the helmet (the one with “BENGALS” on the side) and rooted like crazy. I’ve stood up for them and can no longer do that. You are spot-on about the linemen comment, Jim. It begins and ends there. Just ask Lions fans.

I was in USAF stationed in England when the Bengals conceived. I read all I could in the Stars and Stripes about the players drafted and have faithfully followed the Bengals since. This yr is the biggest dispointment of ALL. Sadly, I will continue to watch, but without a GM who knows football, I don’t believe we will see another Superbowl team in my lifetime.

Re ElPresidente comment about MB stepping away …

Never Happen. When Art Model schlepped Paul Brown out of Cleveland, PB resolved that if given the chance, he would never relinquish control outside the family again. Regardless of his ineptness to field a winning team, MB learned his lessons well from his Father. MB’s priorities are: (1) Maintain control, (2) Make money, and (3)Win games … which of course, puts fans in the seats and makes money (see #2).

Jim. You are spot on. I have been a Bengals fan since I started playing Pee-Wee football at the age of 10 in 1972. Paul Brown was a football genius, but Mike Brown is NOT. He is one of the worst owners in football (rivaled only by Al Davis and the Fords). If he had a merciful bone in his body, he’d hire a GM and step away, or sell the team to someone who would.

Watching our Bengals is sort of like being stuck in the movie GROUND HOG DAY.

I agree …. And, by the way,do you remember who Paul Brown drafted with his very first choice back when the Bengals were born? Was it a quarterback? A running back? A receiver? Nope! It was a center … who went on to be all-league and anchored the O-line for years.

TRUE, we said it all before. Draft O and D linemen, the rest of the cogs will be better. More pressure, cornerbacks are less pressured. More time for the QB, less pressure and more time for recievers. DUH !
