Survey says: Bengals not as bad

NFL writers polled believe Cincinnati will notch its first win of season before Detroit.

And the Cincinnati Bengals are on the clock ...

Or will it be the Detroit Lions?

The race is on for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft with the Bengals (0-8) leading the Lions (0-7) by a half game as Week 9 of the 17-week NFL schedule unfolds.

But look for the hard-charging Bengals to "fade" down the stretch, win a game or two and lose the top-draft-pick derby to Detroit. At least that's what the polls claim.

A Dayton Daily News survey of NFL writers asked three questions: Which of the two teams will win first and when; and predict the teams' final records.

Of 17 respondents from coast to coast, 10 voted for Cincinnati to win first.

Among those 10, four voted for the Bengals' only win to come in the Dec. 28 finale against visiting Kansas City. Three believe they'll beat Jacksonville on Sunday, Nov. 2; two predicted a home triumph over Baltimore (Nov. 30); and one vote was cast for a win at Cleveland (Dec. 21).

Of the seven who voted for Detroit, four like a victory over Tampa Bay (Nov. 23); the other three see a win over Minnesota (Dec. 7).

None of the writers surveyed picked Cincinnati to finish 0-16. The Bengals play five of their eight remaining games at home, where they haven't won since Dec. 23, 2007 (19-14 over the Browns).

Meanwhile, five predicted Detroit to go winless.

• Bengals record (17 votes cast) — 1-15 (11); 2-14 (5); 3-13 (1).

• Lions record (17 votes cast) — 0-16 (5); 1-15 (5); 2-14 (5); 3-13 (2).

That 1-8 looks soooo much better than 0-8. Not. A .500 season is only 7 wins away! BELEEEVEE? Hahaha.

Hey, it’s nice to see the Lions finally get the most votes for something. Maybe this will lead to the NFL allowing them to hire real coaches and players!

0-16 would be the smart thing bengals will win in week 16 trying to prove something when clearly winning will not prove anything we are a joke to the national football league and always will be with mike brown

The Bungals are the worst franchise in the NFL. When was the last season that they had a winning record. And a 8 and 8 season is not a winning record. Mike Brown is to blame not Coach Lewis. The NFL needs to take the franchise away from Mike Brown.

HEY CHICK who cares where these teams finish up . They ought to hold an anti Super Bowl ,for these two toilet dwellers . They could hold it in Flushing New York. God should put a pox on both of their houses .

Hey how about this suggestion. If the Bengals and Lions both end up 0-16 at the end of the season, let the two teams play each other for the number one draft choice. The game could be called the Toilet Bowl and at least one of these bad teams would be earning something after the game.

I am tired of seeing comments ripping against Marvin Lewis. The problem with the Bengals starts at the top (as usual). Mike Brown is the problem. Marvin is one of the best coaches Cincinnati has ever had. Is it Marvin’s fault that Mike Brown went over his head and let Chris Henry back on the team? Henry is a hell of an athlete and lets hope he learns from the past, but BROWN HAS TO GO!!

Gee, it seems to me that 8 losses are more than 7. If the Bengals and Lions both went 0-16 I’d actually pay up to $30 plus parking and concessions to watch them play in some sort of anti-Super Bowl.

In industry a company who finished last one year and in the lower half for decades they would be closed. Can they just shut down the team and save money? Should they pay back the money for the stadium which was built for a “competitive team”???? Over 10 Bengals have been arrested recently and the coach, a nice guy, has put up with it.

Gee, you think a major overhaul is in order? 2-14 is as bad as Shula.

Who really cares anyway? I actually hope we lose 16 to just maybe force Brown’s hand into doing something substantial.

What’s happened to Watson and Kelly? They may be two of the biggest reasons (of players) the Bengals are having such a bad season. Out of nowhere, they’re blocking is terrible this season.

Bengals have more talent than the lions but have a tougher schedule than the lions. Don’t get me wrong, these two are both neck and neck as the worst teams/franchises in NFL history.

Chick, as a Lions fan, I dare you to use the Lions in the same sentence with the Bengals!
