BROWNS NOTES
Team won't rush Bentley to return
Thursday, October 25, 2007
BEREA — With Hank Fraley playing well at center and their offense humming, the Browns appear more inclined than ever not to rush LeCharles Bentley back into action.
"We're going to try to do the best thing for the kid and us," coach Romeo Crennel said. "Hank is playing good. Good enough to be a starter."
Extras
Bentley missed all of last season after tearing a patellar tendon on the second day of training camp. He hoped to be ready for the start of this season, but the Browns placed him on the physically unable to perform list. They have until Nov. 6 to decide their next move with him.
"He's doing everything he can," Crennel said. "He really wants to play for the Browns, but he's not totally ready to be out there yet. He needs a little more time."
Baxter thankful
Defensive back Gary Baxter, out for the season after being placed on injured reserve, praised the Browns on Wednesday for showing "a lot of first-class actions" by sticking with him through last year's double knee surgery and giving him every chance to make it back this season.
Roster spots are precious. The Browns couldn't wait any longer.
"It's not my knees. It's building strength in the muscles," Baxter said.
If Baxter returns next season, it will be as a safety, not a cornerback, the Browns have told him. No NFL player has made it back from twin torn patellar tendons.
Said a supportive Kellen Winslow, "It's not the end of his career or anything. If anything, this will motivate him even more."
Inside knowledge
Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and Rams running back Steven Jackson were roommates at Oregon State as freshmen. Anderson said they spoke on the phone two weeks ago.
Jackson, who has been out with a groin injury, said he plans to play Sunday. The Browns have never faced him.
"He's a physical guy, 235 pounds and lean," Anderson said. "He doesn't quit, either. You've got to tackle him."
Sorensen signed
To take Baxter's roster spot, the Browns signed defensive back Nick Sorensen, a six-year veteran who has played in 75 games with St. Louis and Jacksonville, primarily on special teams.
