CB Scandrick could be an option for Browns in draft
> How do you think the Browns will do in the upcoming draft?
Sunday, February 17, 2008
There are a lot of uncertainties that surround the Cleveland Browns defense and the team is expected to shore up some of those in the draft.
Extras
One area on defense the team will take a hard look at is the secondary. The Browns need to add some quality depth if they are to make a run at the playoffs.
Boise State junior standout CB Orlando Scandrick fits the Browns cornerback mold perfectly. He is a little-known player coming out of nowhere with tons of talent reminiscent of CB Leigh Bodden.
Scandrick is described as the truth when it comes to cover skills. He locks up receivers like a maximum security prison. Book 'em Danno! He is believed to possess blazing 4.3 speed in the 40-yard dash and is preparing to show that and more to NFL scouts at the Combine this week. The way I hear it, the virtual unknown is expected to set it off in Indy.
There are those who believe that Scandrick could be this year's Usama Young, who was drafted out of Kent State in the third-round by the New Orleans Saints, depending on how well he works out at the Combine.
Blessed with a superior scouting department, the Browns should have no problem discovering Scandrick's talents. The Browns are known for finding little-known prospects and drafting or signing them as undrafted free agents such as they did with Bodden and KR/WR Joshua Cibbs. Enough said.
According to a source, former defensive backs coach now defensive coordinator Mel Tucker may have had a conversation concerning Scandrick when he opted for the draft last month.
Big C's Scouting Report:
At 5-11, 195 pounds Scandrick is a big corner with outstanding speed, quickness and natural athletic ability. He's one tough hombre in coverage and in run support. He is not afraid to mix it up. Scandrick has great straight-line speed and ball skills. He played wide receiver all his life before coming to Boise State. He is most comfortable playing in man-to-man and press coverage. Teams rarely threw his way last season. Scandrick said he patterns his game after no one but studies Broncos Champ Bailey and Falcons DeAngelo Hall.
Scandrick also has value on special-teams, blocking four kicks in '07. He's a very smart player, and coachable. On the flip side, he must improve on overall consistency and become a better tackler by wrapping his man up. Bottom line? He's a true competitor with a tremendous upside.

Hey all. I have been a Browns fan since 1963. I’m a long time member, former Hof’er on the Browns board/s. I have established a solid rep over the past 6 or 7 years on the boards. Devin in Boise is an arrogant a**e. Don’t judge all BSU fans or Orlando Scandrick fans by him. OS will is a solid NFL CB prospect. A viable 4th RDR @ minimum, maybe better. After the combine he had he may be gone day 1. The Browns need to upgrade the CB depth & LB is gone. OS would be a good fit.

“Devin in Boise” has made similar posts in other forums. He is definitely not a Boise State fan and certainly does not represent those of us that live in Boise, Idaho.

With the exception of Wimbley and DQwell Jackson, the entire front seven needs to be upgraded. That leaves 2 lb’s and 3 D-linemen. Robaire Smith may be our best d-lineman as of right now.

We need defense in everyway. I think it starts with the line, and I think we should consider a look at Josh Cribbs as a DB. He should see more downs, and we don’t seem to have an offense that can utilize his athleticism on a routine basis.

I guess we all should feel gracious and offer admiration to Devin in Boise. Suggest you select another forum to further magnify your greatness.
The Browns don’t need a glorified CB from Boise, but need to stip the RUN……….that, my MBA friend, is known as a strong D-Line!!!

Carlos, Great Article! As a proud Bishop Kelly High School, Boise State, and USC MBA Program Alum, I pride myself on bringing a high level of excellence and pursuit of perfection to everything I do. Whether that’s being a top businessman at my downtown Boise corner office, driving my Porsche to my exclusive, upscale Boise neighborhood to kick it with my visually stunning blonde girlfriend and private elementary school educated son(Devin Jr.), being a top caller on the Jim Rome Show(Devin in Boise), dining at the Arid Club, staying in peak physical shape thanks to my highly-regarded personal traniner, or rooting on my mighty Bishop Kelly Knights, Boise State Broncos, and USC Trojans, excellence is all I will accept. I see this same level of excellence and pursuit of perfection from Orlando Scandrick(well, minus the plagarism infractions that caused him to leave school and Jeremy Childs to get suspended for the semester.) Mark it down: Orlando Scandrick will be a SUPERSTAR in the NFL and my MIGHTY Boise State Broncos will go undefeated this fall and win the Orange Bowl!

LOOK TO THE SUPER BOWL TEAMS THIS PAST YEAR. THEY BOTH HAVE GREAT LINES.THIS GAME OF FOOTBALL IS THIRD DOWNS. WHOEVER CONVERTS MORE WINS.WE NEED A D-LINE THAT ARE IN GOOD SHAPE AND CAN PLAY ALL FOUR QUARTERS. NOT A D-LINE THAT HAS IT’S BELLY DRAGGING ON THE TURF ALL GAME LONG. SO HOWEVER YOU DO IT BROWNS STOP THE RUN AND YOU WILL WIN.

You can never have too many good corners, but COME ON, what’s up with this love letter? Orlando better send his Uncle Carlos a nice fruit basket for this piece of fantasy fluff. He’s maybe the 30th best CB in the draft. The kid started three years at Boise State and never made even second team all-conference! The big “C” must stand for “Chucklehead.” What’s next, a three-part tribute to the nation’s twenty-fourth best punter? What nonsense.

As noted by most, the Brown’s most immediate needs dt/de will have to come from free agency, and in terms of depth lets go with wr/lb/db, through the draft.

The D-line is too old. Time to mix in some fresh blood in and create a cardiac-style pass rush, that’ll make Tom Brady look like Ryan Leaf, Big Ben play like Neil O’Donnell in the super bowl, and Carson Palmer play like David Klingler. Other than that, we’re a lot better than 2 years ago.

If this guy is the best player at our draft slot then take him. I don’t want to draft DL/LB just to draft them especially if this guy or some other player or position is more talented, and neither does Savage an company. DL and ILB/OLB do need a sever overhaul, no argument here, but I really think free agency is the key this year because of picking atthe bottom of the 2nd round limits us.

If we were to be able to stop the run as well as rush the passer we would have a tremendous secondary. So what are the Brownies biggest needs? We need to re-sign Lewis, and then in free agency aquire a DE that is capable of stopping the run as well as rush the passer from the left side. LOLB would be free to blitz, stop the run, or fall back into coverage. Inside Linbacker is another concern. Davis has to go. Then the Brownies would be a solid “D”! Go Brownies!

D-Line D-Line D-Line D-Line! Oh, and replace Andre Davis. On any other NFL roster he’s a 2nd or 3rd stringer. Period.

The defense needs to shore up the line first and foremost. They need a big nose tackle to stuff the run up the middle and probably another one to rotate in due to the constant double teaming he’ll be getting. Then the tackle posistion needs to be addressed. The Smiths are ok, but we need more help stuffing the run and getting some pressure on the QB up the middle. Then it’s time to look at another inside linebacker, Davis is getting on in years, so Jackson will need help.

The Browns have a solid secondary. We can use help on the D-line, LB, and a center to replace Fraley in a couple of years. The salary cap will still afford the Browns to seek help in any of those areas in free agency. Lance Briggs anyone???

Are you kidding me? CB is probably the only defensive position where we look pretty solid at. Bodden has turned into a good corner and bothe Wright and McDonald showed great promise at the end of the year and I expect one of them to really blossom into a shutdown type corner if not very serviceable as a #2 to Bodden. Holly is as good a nickel back as you can get.
OLB is major concern for me. Wimbley needs some help. Peak is proving to be a chyna doll and Willie just is running on E im afraid

True, the Browns need help on the D-Line, but you can never have enough cornerbacks. Hopefully, Mel Tucker will allow his cornerbacks to do more press coverage instead of sitting them back 5-7 yards deep allowing the QB to look like Joe Mantegna…err, Joe Montana. Shoring up the D-Line is a priority because no pass rush (along with the soft coverage) makes QB’s look better than they are against our defense.
Ironically, I have Scandrick on my Madden franchise.

DB doesn’t seem like the biggest concern to me. With Bodden, MacDonald, Wright and Holly I think the depth is serviceable. I hope the Browns concentrate on DL and get back into the first round or maybe early 2nd round to take a big physical DT or DE.

Yes, the Browns do need some depth at defensive back, but they need even more help on the defensive line. A good defensive line makes even an ordinary defensive backfield look good. For the most obvious example recently, all one has to do is look at the New York football Giants.
