Quinn wants to take over as starting quarterback
Cleveland GM Phil Savage says Derek Anderson is the clear leader heading into training camp.
Comment: Who should start for the Browns?
Monday, March 03, 2008
CLEVELAND — Browns quarterback Brady Quinn expects to compete for the starting job despite Derek Anderson's $24 million, three-year contract.
"My whole goal is preparing myself and getting ready to try to take over the starting job and lead this team," said Quinn Saturday, March 1, during an appearance at an auto show.
Extras
Anderson agreed to his new deal Friday, Feb. 29, a move that took him off the restricted free-agent market. The contract includes $14.5 million guaranteed.
General Manager Phil Savage says Anderson is the clear starter entering training camp. Anderson threw 29 TD passes last season and led the Browns to 10 wins.
Quinn understands the situation and even applauded Anderson's signing, but doesn't plan on carrying a clipboard again. His mind-set is "just competing and try to take this team to the playoffs, something we weren't able to do last year."
Head coach Romeo Crennel will open camp with Anderson the starter, but maintained competition breeds success.
"Both of those guys are going to compete," he said Saturday at team headquarters in Berea. "And then we'll see who gives us the best chance."

I like have DA and BQ its a safty move for my Browns. Two QB is better then one and some back-up to me. I want to see what BQ has and i think BQ will get it in 08’. Our Browns are going to kick some real a.. 08’. Think about it the last three year we made real moves to get better. We are going to beat BENGALS and RAVES I am looking for a win or two over the f…ing STEELES. “IF YOU ARE A DIE HARD CLEVELAND BROWNS THE S… I SEE, MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A KID THAT CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO START.

I know the Browns don’t have a draft pick in the first 3 rounds and what Savage has said makes this appear unlikely. I refuse to believe that Anderson will be in a Browns uniform next year until the draft is over. The team LOVES Quinn and truly want him to be the face of the franchise. Certain teams have certain targets for this draft at QB and when they don’t get who they covet, Anderson’s stock is going to skyrocket very quickly. Savage loves the draft and he has set himself up perfectly.

I agree with Adam. I love it when Cincinnati people make generalizations about Cleveland when they’ve probably never been out of the West side of Cincinnati all their life. I would hate for all of them to miss a high school football game on Friday night instead of heading to Cleveland and forming their own opinion about the city. As far as Anderson/Quinn goes I would say that Anderson is the starter at the beginning of season. If he struggles then bring in Quinn, b/c it’s playoffs or bust in 08

BNoPanther: “Cleveland you are still more famous for your burning river than for any one of your sports teams.”
Please stay off of this forum if you aren’t going to answer the question about Quinn. My guess is you have never even been out of Cincinnati for an extended period of time to make these generalizations about Cleveland. Would you please let me know how the Reds have been doing? I think the Indians were a game away from the World Series but lost to the eventual World Champions. And how is your NBA team doing this year? Oh, don抰 have one? I remember the Cavs making it to the finals last year not to mention we have arguably the league MVP on our team. Oh yea, he was born and raised in Cleveland by the way. Please let us have an educated conversation about our team and you can stick to the Bengal forums. Thanks

I think Anderson made far too many mistakes last year. The Browns could have easily won the division if it had not been for his mistakes and coaching mistakes. For example, run the ball when you are deep in the redzone, don’t throw it. In the cincy game we did it at least 4 times, a win and we were in. Don’t blame Dungy for not playing his starters, the Browns had no body to blame but themselves. I can think of the Oakland, Arizona, Pittsburgh games where we simply gave it away. my vote DA.

Anderson is a pro bowler and Quinn has taken a dozen snaps in the NFL, give Brady the clip board and tell him to watch, learn & be ready if something happens to Derek. All you insane Browns fans who think Brady is the next Joe Montana need to chill and remember all the QB’s that were going to be great and didn’t pan out. If Derek bust this year then you have Brady to turn to, but if Derek goes out and throws for 4000 yards and 30 td’s and wins a game in the playoffs, then trade Brady!

I just hope that Savage doesn’t get brain-fade & trade Quinn off. Savage says that there will be no QB competition in camp, maybe so. But, my money’s on Quinn ultimately taking the job. The only way I see D.A. keeping it, is if Quinn is traded. Savage might not hand him the job, Crennel might not hand him the job, DA will hand him the job. A much tougher schedule lies ahead in ‘08. D.A better get those bugs worked out. As for me..I’ll take Quinn over Kelly Hol…I mean Scott Mitch…I mean D.A.

Really JOe and Double D if Rodgers is so horrible then why is it that the bengals were trying so hard to get him, but is a shame that thye are to stupid to add up the numbers to figure out how to get a guy enjoy

Nope. My opinion about Rogers remains the same. Corey Williams is twice the player Rogers is. Luckily, we got him too.
However, it’s great to see Rogers was willing to push the date he receives his bonus back to become a Brown, but wouldn’t do the same thing to become a Bengal! Looks like the Bungle reputation still exists among NFL players!!! What a joke of an organization Mike Brown has!

My thoughts exactly Gary. I know one thing, with the Browns moves (minuns the Anderson signing)and if the Bengals pick up Robertson, Odom, Pace and Utech, which I think they will, the North just became the best conference in the AFC.

Everyone ridiculed Crennel and Savage for their handling of the QB situation in the 2007 preseason, but I think they showed that not playing favorites may be the best way to motivate each player to prove himself. So I think they should keep an open mind again this year (that is, of course, if Anderson is not traded). Anderson had a great year, but the haunting 2nd Bengals game and Quinn’s solid showing filling in against the 49ers muddy things a bit.

I am not a Lady Quinn fan. I saw him get intimidated in many college games. Anderson, on the other hand, typically showed poise (minus the end of the first half vs. the Bengals, with two straight picks that resulted in TD’s) last season. If Browns trade Anderson, I think they are resigning themselves to another rebuilding year. The Bengals on the other hand — I had a feeling two years ago that the 2005 season might be their pinnacle, and I see nothing to dispell that.

Being a Steeler Fan, I respect the way the Browns played last year. They had their best record in a long time and you could see the motivation in the players. I expect them to be a tough opponent again this year. As for the Bungals, bwwwhaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

BQ is a bust. How many snaps last year? The Browns won what they did last year because of Anderson.

To people saying DA will now be traded, there is no way you can sign someone to a big contract and then trade them in football. The entire signing bonus hits the cap at once if that is done.

Cincinnati has a long history of signing losers in free agency. With the Bengals mass exodus of players from the defensive side of the ball, 2008 will be a long year and Shaun Rogers will add nothing to an already terrible defense.

Shaun Rogers is a fat, unmotivated waste of money. He would have been cut before training camp, so you guys just got robbed of a 3rd and 5th rounder! Of course, he’ll fit right in with his attitude in the Cincinnati locker room with CJ and company! More drama for Cincinnati!
Keep thinking you’re closer to the Super Bowl than the Browns. I love to hear all the disappointed fans complaining on 700 WLW 3 games into the season.

All Bungle fans have been thinking Super Bowl since one lucky year they won the division. I’m sure you’re one of them.
By the way, Anderson’s QB rating was 82.5 (not under 80), and he threw less INT’s than the great Carson Palmer. Why didn’t I see Carson in the Pro Bowl????
So, Quinn was a questionable college QB? He only owns every major record from “QB University” - also known as Notre Dame. Of course, I’m sure you don’t think names like Joe Montana were any good either…

What makes you think I was thinking Super Bowl. I’ll tell you this, the Bengals are closer to that game than the Browns. Especially with the addition of Shaun Rogers and it only cost us a 3rd and 5th. As we add one piece of the puzzle at a time, you guys give up a 1st for a questionalble college QB (Quinn) and throw too much money at a starter with a QB rating under 80.

One season is worth $20 million??? The Browns will rue this decision, unless Anderson becomes another Frank Ryan. Which I hope, but seriously doubt.

Poor BnOPanther.
“You are under the illusion that the Browns are good.”
Kind of like all those Bungle fans who were thinking Super Bowl coming into last season? How’d that work out for you?
10-6 versus 7-9. Keep thinking you guys are better than the Browns. It’s comical.

Don’t be a hater. I’m just pointing out the similarities between the two franchises. You are under the illusion the Browns are good. If I remember both teams split and didn’t make the playoffs.

Really…..Bengals fans talking trash??? Seriously, your team has had one, I repeat, ONE winning season in the past 17 with no signs of seriously turning things around with the WORST owner in all of sports who is more concerned with turning a profit instead of investing in his team. When the Bengals have more than three scouts, watch game film on 8mm film and actually gain control over their own team, you can talk about how bad you think the Browns are.

As a Bengals fan I love what the Browns are doing. Reminds me of the Bengals in the good old days. Bad defense, bad QBs, old running back and now they don’t have a 1st or 2nd round pick. That’s the way to build a franchise. Cleveland you are still more famous for your burning river than for any one of your sports teams.

If they’re smart they’ll trade him, but they’ll probably let a QB controversy boil for 3 years and rip the team apart. As a Bengals fan, I hope they keep DA. His good numbers were a product of a good (and healthy) O-line and recievers, and a crappy defense that kept him on the field. Only an 85 QB rating and his worst games were the meaningful ones. Thanks for the 4 picks DA! Keep ‘em coming! Season of dreams? Keep dreaming! Sure felt good keeping the Clowns out of the playoffs!

I say give my brother in law a chance and see what he can do, he may lead them to the promised land, I sure wish we had him here in green bay instead of that old man we have now who throws int’s all the time..

Even though he signed they will trade him. DA is not going to lead the browns to the super bowl. He’s an average QB. He’s going to win some games but when the game is on the line he chokes. We need a field general. They may keep him around for another year but BQ has got to get some PT this year. You make a good point don. If we trade him we do need to be careful about choosing a back-up. The “Season of Dreams” for the browns. I can’t wait! Who Dey? They be them Browns!

Could this just be the first step of a sign and trade deal? if so, the browns will have to be careful and judicious in who they get to be BQ’s back-up.
