No playoffs for Browns due to schedule, depth issues

COMMENT: What do you think of this prediction?

BIG C: Browns training camp preview, NFL notes

By Chick Ludwig

Staff Writer

Monday, July 21, 2008

Which AFC North team will be the first to implode in 2008?

That's an easy one. The Cleveland Browns, of course.

You have to love their offensive line of center Hank Fraley, guards Eric Steinbach and Ryan Tucker (or Rex Hadnot), and tackles Joe Thomas and Kevin Shaffer. But it lacks depth.

They have a tremendous defensive front of Shaun Rogers, Shaun "The Hamburglar" Smith and Corey Williams. But the secondary has more holes than a sackful of Krispy Kremes.

The Browns spent too much to acquire Rogers from the Lions — a third-round pick plus cornerback Leigh Bodden — and it's a move they'll regret because Bodden is the league's only corner who can contain Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson.

And it's only a matter of time before the albatross of a quarterback controversy confronts Cleveland.

With home games against Dallas (Sept. 7) and Pittsburgh (Sept. 14), the Browns will start 0-2. They'll beat Baltimore on the road

(Sept. 21), then lose at Cincinnati (Sept. 28) and be 1-3.

During their Oct. 5 bye, look for quarterback Derek Anderson to be replaced by Brady Quinn for the Monday-Nighter at the New York Giants (Oct. 13). Cleveland will struggle the remainder of the season to get back to .500.

This is not to say the Bengals won't pull "a Norman," choke and miss the playoffs for the 17th time in 18 seasons. But the Browns — with Denver and Buffalo on the agenda in addition to the NFC East and AFC South — face the more difficult schedule.

I sure wish every question was this simple.

First off, I love my Browns. But….let’s finally learn something from the past and just say nothing. Why bang on the Bengals? Pittsburgh owns us and that’s a fact. If we can’t beat the Steelers, then whos cares about the Bengals. Last year was good for all of us. Hopefully we can build on it this year and make the playoffs. Let’s turn the page people! Success on the field speaks louder than any empty Browns/Bengals trash talk.

For fans of a subpar Bengals team crowded by “Johnson’s” you guy’s sure do talk alot. Cleveland out classed you last year (Game 1)and will do it again this year. (Don’t kid yourself, Cleveland beat themselves in game 2, your Bengals can assume none of the credit.) As for Chad Johnson, well it doesn’t look like he want’s to recieve for your high quality, multi-talented team any more does it? It’s OK…. I don’t think any less of fan’s that have nothing to brag about in 2007. (And soon 2008)

LOTS OF BRAVE/UNINFORMED TALK BROWN’S WEENIES! THE FACT REMAINS: YOU CAN’T EVEN BEAT CINCINNATI ON A REGULAR BASIS. 1-5 AGAINST A TEAM THAT YOU UNIVERSALLY RIDICULE? WE SUCK, BUT LIKE, YOU CAN’T BEAT US ON A REGULAR BASIS. ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS PERHAPS—BUT NOT ON A REGULAR BASIS.

AS FOR BRADY QUINN? HE HAS THE BEST JOB IN FOOTBALL. CARRYING A CLIPBOARD FOR TWENTY YEARS FOR BIG BUCKS IS GREAT. MUCH BETTER THAN GETTING HURT DOING SOMETHING YOU AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH TO PULL OFF.

AND HE ISN’T.

hahahahaah this guy is an idiot….the Browns oline is gonna have two backups that are nfl starters. (rex hadnot) (Ryan tucker) or even seth mickenny. Shaun smith was rated an 89 on madden 09 that means something because it is the most realistic football games around and robire isnt to shabby eaither. yeah our corners are the weakspot but with that dline recievers will not get downfield . O yeah and that comment about bodden being able to guard chad i believe week 2 chad caught for 225yards2tds

I would love to meet this writer in a dark alley somewhere and show him the true meaning of a browns fan, i c alot of naysayers saying we will onoly be 9-7 this year….after the confidence this team put together last year? i see us as a 11-5 team we dont have attitude problem players on our team but alot of leaders——even da in the offseason has been working on his game to what——only improve….that sounds like the leader i want on offense….defense will be our leader this year “watch”

By Jordan

This is ridiculous! The Browns have made many upgrades to all positions. They have bettered their depth (except at corner). The pass rush should take pressure of the DB’s. Yes the loss of Leigh will hurt, but don’t count the Browns out of picking someone up, maybe like a Lito Sheppard. The Browns will be fine, finally beat the Steelers, and make the playoffs.

GO BROWNIES!!

So I’ve read one Cleveland fans say that while the secondary is weak, you will be fine once teams start releasing players… That’s encouraging!

And another Cleveland fan stating that Cincinnati is second fiddle to Cleveland… Since 2005 our record against Cleveland is 5-1… and we went 5-1 against the Indians this year too!

Scoreboard!

Chick….I’m a Bengals fan. You stated that you wish every question was this simple. I can only imagine the hard ones then. I don’t think we (the Bengals) will ever stop imploding! Our organization and coaching are awful! However, dream on Browns fans. You do it every year anyway with the same results…..”we’ll make it one day”. It’s OK to dream.

What else can be said that hasn’t been said? Hmm….

We’ve already covered the fact that Ludwig is a bungle Homer. How about the fact that ESPN has already stated that Cleveland has the best O-Line. We already knew that. They greatly improved the D-Line. Signed a good WR free agent, check. Do they still have holes? Sure. Everyone does. What this idiot Ludwig doesn’t get is the fact that this team has a lot more talent, top to bottom, than Cinci. It’s not even close. Go Browns!

By Whipjacka

July 23, 2008 1:01 AM | Link to this

To Conclude my point: Considering how the North did last year and the subsequent off season dealings that occurred, I see no reason why the Browns do not have as good of, if not the best, chance to win the division and make it to the playoffs. In regards to the position questions- -5 legitimate starters out of five positions on the offensive line is more than any other team in the league can boast. -I will concede that our dB’s are unproven, but I will not predict that they will be bad.

By Whipjacka

July 23, 2008 12:51 AM | Link to this

It is important to note that each team in the AFC North has the same basic schedule (with the exception of two games). At this point it the question stops being ‘how will the Browns do against this tough schedule’ to ‘which team in the AFC North will fare the best against their identical schedules’ So, in theory, if the browns went 9-7 or even 8-8, given the level of competition in the division, Cleveland could still make it to the playoffs.

The Browns will win the division this year, but there is one thing that I disagree with just about everyone on. DA. DA had almost 4,000 yds passing, and 29 TD’s. But he also was down toward the bottom of the entire NFL in comp. %, toward the top in ints., and I have never seen a pro QB miss so many dump offs to the backs coming out of the backfield and misseed short slants across the middle. DA has to go.

This guy doesn’t know at all what he is talking about!I’m a true blue Browns fan…and I can say I have never felt this way about a season before.I can feel the Browns are at that turning point. We don’t lack depth..I think this writer is a Cincinnati fan or something! As for the QB situation,I feel that DA can improve but I also feel good with Brady as the backup.I think Brady can easily take over if things don’t go well with DA.

By I agree with the prediction

July 22, 2008 5:00 PM | Link to this

Furthermore, my prediction for “most disappointing” NFL offense in 2008. It will be the “Brownies” offense in part due to the “lofty” expectations places on this group. Here is a glimpse of the future..Derek Anderson will be unable to duplicate his 2007 success creating challenges for players such as Braylon Edwards & Jamal Lewis (if healthy). An early 1-4 record creates a QB controversy. The move is made to Brady Quinn who shows glimpses of potential but struggles mightily in the long run.

By I agree with the prediction

July 22, 2008 4:48 PM | Link to this

First of all, let me say I do like the “Brownies”, but I’m also a realist. Us, or you “Brownies” fans will not have to wait long before you’re saying what Cubs fans say every year “Wait till next year”! The “Brownies” playoffs hopes will be pure “vapor” after week 5….Guaranteed! This Division is very competitive AND the rest of the “Brownies” schedule is BRUTAL. Wait till 2009 “Brownies” fans!

By I agree with the prediction

July 22, 2008 4:41 PM | Link to this

The “Brownies” were a very pleasant surprise in 2007. As much as they were a pleasant surprise in 2007 they will be a huge disappointment in 2008. I could not agree more with the author assessment of a non playoff year in 2008. The “Brownies” will be a 7-9 team this year at best. The schedule will eat them alive and Brady Quinn will be called upon by week 5. Jamal Lewis will turn back into the “lumbering” turtle he was before 2007 (assuming he does not get hurt).

What I think is great is that BROWNS fans are responding to this article with more knowledge than the joker who wrote it. Not only is the author narrow minded about his assessment of the BROWNS, but with the division where the bungles claim to be a part. The BROWNS obviously made a ton of moves in the off-season that would appear to shore up the defensive line and take the heat off of the DB’s, who have a lot of talent but lack the depth as of yet.

By scott

All I have to say is all the AFC Central has to play the same teams… Only the Browns have Improved and Also all them teams (each AFC team faces) that were good last year..dont mean they all will be this year… also some bad teams get good. Comparing last year vs this year teams isn’t a true assesment.

You have to see what a team does in the offseason and how they play together during preseason and starting the year to get a good picture.

At tight end they have the great K2 who is a HUGE mismatch. Steve hieden and Martin Rucker. And the linebackers were dissappointing las5t year because they had no dline to eat up blockers. This year expect Andra Davis andKAmerion Wimbley to have a break out season. Also Sean Jones and Brodney Pool have shown great improvement.

One thing I learned from reading your column is that you don’t know squat about football. Our secondary is the only thing that concerns me right now, but as soon as teams start releasing players,we should be able to pick up someone to fill that void.

You probably don’t know that before the season starts, all teams have to drop down to a 53 player roster.Hey……you learned something today.

Get yourself a Dear Abby column, cause football is not your specialty for sure.

By jon

July 22, 2008 11:34 AM | Link to this

OK.. First of all.. The BRowns have to back-up line-man that can play multiple positions effectively. Derek Anderson WILL NOT be replaced by Brady Quinn because the O-line will not allow anyone to even touch DA. The cornerbacks are limited but capable of holding thier own especially now that we have Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams. What u don’t mention is our depth at Wide Reciever and Tight End. With Braylon Edwards, Donte Stallworth, And Joe J, the browns have great recievers and depth.

Bengals and Browns both suck.
I predict 8-8 for both teams and neither will make the playoffs.
At this point in time a trip to the playoffs for either franchise would be like winning the superbowl.
I would sure like it if these teams started to get competative year after year.
That would be fun.

The article was poorly written. My 11th grade English teacher would have given it a D for lack of support for the argument. For you Bengals fans that want to talk history here is some for you… The Browns have won 8 league championships, 11 conference championships, and 13 division championships and have 16 hall of famers. Bengals have 2 conference championships, 6 division championships, and 3 people in the Hall (Paul Brown is in for both teams)

First of all, I don’t think the Bungles missing the playoffs would so much be a matter of “choking” as it would be just standard procedure. Second of all…our defense is bad? I think in week 2 of last season we saw that our defense might be 45 points allowed bad, but at least we weren’t 51 points allowed bad. It’s fine for a Pittsburgh homer to tell us our defense sucks but from a Bungle fan? That’s like Chris Henry telling Odell Thurman he might have a drinking problem.

A team with 2 quaterbacks is a team without any. I believe that the 49ers would disagree with Montana and Young. Also maybe the Patriots with Bledsoe and Brady. Browns go 11-5 winning AFC north. Bengals luckily go 5-12 with an on field domestic situation between Palmers and Chad abotu wk5. TJ will have a great season. He needs one to shop to the other NFL teams for some big $$$. I’ll take our O-line versus Bengals O-line any day. How many games will Willie get to play, before injuries…

Ravens- fired head coach and no QB

Bengals- off the field turmoil in and out of season with too much finger pointing

Steelers- as season wore on it showed they slowly got away from cowers regime and lost 2 games @ HOME at the end of the season and then failed to keep a key member of the of the offensive line

Browns- only team to not take a step back last year and still headed in the right direction in the offseason

all 4 teams have 8 games vs playoff teams of last year

I put as much faith in Chick’s assessment of the Browns as I would a personal check from Pete Johnson.

Mr. Ludwig,

Respectfully, I cant believe that you get paid. lol

Your merit or Homework is shallow at best. With browns adding over 900 lbs. to the defensive line and freeing up clevelands DE’S the CB’S will have to due less as the QB’S cant throw the ball from thier butts. Speaking of predictions cleveland will not give up 1 100 yard rushing attempt!

At best the CB’S will have to cover for 3 seconds on average.

See you in the playoffs will you will eat this post.

Ha! When you get this many posts telling you you’re wrong, you probably are. For the Bengals to choke, they would have to go 0-16. They are NOT going to be anywhere close to good this year. The Ravens still don’t have a QB. And if you want to pick on someone for O-line depth, look at Pittsburgh. Big Ben is about to learn what it felt like to be Tim Couch.

Browns v NFC East: 2-2. Against this weak division: 4-2. It’s time for a return to the playoffs. Time to get another day job Chick.

hey dave, since when is winslow a finger pointer? it sounds like your talking about your own finger pointing, crybaby, “im not playing unless i get more money”, punk wide receiver! at least winslow has a lot more class than chad. the guy went on tv and threw your coach and his own team under the bus! welcome back chad! dont ever change! this offseason you were actually entertaining!

hahahahahahahahah! hey james, you seem really SURE about the bengals efforts to “sure of the defense”! your talkin about an unsigned ROOKIE, and a player that benefited from playing with big albert haynesworth! i’ll remember this when jamal “old as the pope” lewis (who happens to be the same age as your running back) is running all over that “sured of defense”!

How can the Browns win 10 games? I’d like to see someone honestly, with their head, not with their heart, tell me the 10 wins the Browns will have? I count Cincy, Houston, Buffalo, Baltimore twice and either (but not both) Denver or Giants.

Browns fans need to be realistic. I am neither a Browns nor Bengals fan. But in looking at Cleveland’s schedule, it really does appear they will start out 1-3 (winning at Baltimore). But then they have the Giants before visiting the Redskins and Jaguars. That’s a lot of playoff teams. They MAY be able to beat the Giants. So lets say they do. They are 3-6 after beating the Ravens and losing to Denver. They beat Buffalo (maybe) and beat Houston. They are 5-6 before losing 4 of last 5. 6-10.

This article is one of the biggest “HOMER” pieces ever written! It is obvious that you are the Bungle beat writer. It is funny that in USA TODAY the Browns are predicted to go 10-6. That is the difference in an unbiased actual sports journalist and you. How you got as far as you have in sports writing is beyond me. Nice job!!!

WoW! You get payed to write? After the first paragraph it was ovious that you don’t do your homework. Browns are considered to have one of the deeper offensive lines in the NFL. I notice you didn’ mention any of their names. That’s probably because if they don’t have an alias you wouldn’t recognize them. Anyone who knows football 101 knows that when your secondary is getting torched it has more to do with the defensive lines lack of run stopping and lack of pressure on the QB. Go Browns!

Being a Browns fan in Dayton is tough. You gotta have thick skin; especially when you have media like Chick and others I won’t mention, who are die hard Bengals fans. I don’t care if my team is in last, I’ll still support them. At least the headline for my team isn’t that there’s another one in jail, like the Bengal’s. Go Browns, Go Dawgs! Woof woof!!
