Browns bruised, battered

Wire Reports

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Cleveland Browns receiver Joshua Cribbs suffered a high ankle sprain Monday night, Aug. 18, against the New York Giants that could keep him out until the opener Sept. 7, a source told The Plain Dealer on Tuesday, and quarterback Derek Anderson suffered a mild concussion that will keep him out for the next preseason game or two.

Cribbs underwent and X-rays and an MRI exam on Tuesday, which revealed no fracture. He will definitely sit out Saturday's third preseason game in Detroit and probably the final preseason game Aug. 28 at home against the Bears. Cribbs will be evaluated day-to-day for the Bears game, but starters usually play sparingly in the final tuneup anyway.

The Browns had no comment Tuesday on the five players injured in the game. They also lost Brodney Pool and Brad Cieslak to concussions, and linebacker Leon Williams to a neck injury.

Anderson's concussion is mild, but one source said it could probably even be described as slight. However, the Browns are expected to err on the side of caution and start Brady Quinn against the Lions — the dress rehearsal game in which the starters usually play about three quarters.

Another reason the Browns will be extra cautious with Anderson is the fact he also suffered a concussion in college at Oregon State. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has put a special emphasis on protecting players from brain injuries, and all are required to undergo baseline testing before the season begins.

Quinn replaced Anderson and engineered two touchdown drives. Quinn completed 7-of-12 attempts for 124 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions for a 121.5 rating.

Bengals cut Gaines

Miami University standout Jerrid Gaines was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday to make room for on the roster Chris Henry.

In marked the second time the Bengals cut Gaines, a 5-foot-11, 191-pound cornerback. He was cut on July 7 after his first stay in Cincinnati. But the Bengals re-signed him Aug. 5. He also spent some time in the Browns minicamp in April.

Manning speaks

INDIANAPOLIS — Peyton Manning made it to his first practice of the season Tuesday, then ended his self-imposed silence by saying he wanted to play in Indianapolis' first regular-season game Sept. 7 against Chicago.

"As to when I'll be back on the practice field, that's still to be determined," he said.

Indy's franchise quarterback had been kept out of public view since having surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee July 14.

Odds and ends

Falcons: Joe Horn was released after Atlanta failed to trade the veteran receiver. The 36-year-old Horn was a disappointment in 2007 when he caught only 27 passes for 243 yards and a TD.

Patriots: New England released 13-year veteran tight end Marcus Pollard. In 191 games, including 133 starts, Pollard caught 349 passes for 4,280 yards and 40 TDs.
