True Browns fans can't cheer for the Steelers

By Hal McCoy

Staff Writer

Thursday, January 22, 2009

This is an e-mail sent to a Cleveland Browns fan/friend who said he is rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl because he had a small wager on them.

"Get help, fast. A true Cleveland Browns fan never roots for the Steelers. Not ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. It's like Burger King rooting for McDonald's."

He answered that it was only because of his wager and he was told, "It's the Steelers, bub. They should call them the Stealers."

Even if they weren't playing the Steelers I'd root for the Arizona/St. Louis/Chicago Cardinals. Nearly every NFL fan knows the Cardinals were once the St. Louis Cardinals, but how many know they began as the Chicago Cardinals?

From 1920 to 1959 they were the Chicago Cardinals and they played in old Comiskey Park.

The Cards weren't bad. They were awful. They won two championships and cheated to get one. In 1925, teams did their own scheduling and when the season ended the Cardinals finished behind the Pottstown (Pa.) Maroons. Chicago quickly scheduled two more games against weak NFL opposition, won both and was recognized as the NFL champion. One of the games was against a Milwaukee team that already had disbanded and was stocked for the game with high school kids.

And how is this for irony? During World War II, the Cardinals and Steelers were one team, combined to become Card-Pitt in 1944.

If the Bengals and Browns did that, the result probably would be the same as Card-Pitt — 0-10 in '44.

To all you idiots who are saying that because someone lives in Ohio, they shouldn’t be a Steeler fan: You’re IDIOTS!! I was born and raised in Eastern Ohio, and still live there. I have been a Steeler fan all my life. I live an hour from Pittsburgh, about 2.5 from Cleveland, and about 5 from Cincinatti. Why wouldn’t I be a Steeler fan? They are the home team for me. And to top it off, the Clowns and Bungles just plain SUCK!!

Cleveland, turn your fustrations into success. Duplicate what Pittsburgh does to you, (blitz & run the ball) it’s the shortest path back to competitiveness. Lack of pressure on the QB is the reason for your season. Define & identify who cleveland is & reflect that on your helmet and your colors. Doing the same thing every year & expect a different results, that is defined as INSANITY. This is what “if you can’t beat them join them” should mean…Holla !!

A real Browns fan NEVER roots for the Sheelers, or the Ratbirds! All I rooted for last Sunday was a well placed plane crash in Sh*tsburgh. And for anyone who says you should root for teams in your division, please put back on your LSU sweatshirt and chant SEC when gameday comes to town. While us Browns Backers don’t have much to cheer about, NOTHING is more pothetic than bragging about another team’s accomplishments.

I happen to be a proud Colts fan. I have no issue with the Steelers, especially considering both teams have already won their respective Super Bowls, this decade. The Black and Gold, however, do have their hands full with a team that hardly anyone talks about in the 2008-09 NFL tournament, the Arizona Cardinals. The Steelers already won a Super Bowl, but next Sunday, the Cardinals have to earn it. If the Cardinals can’t get past the Steelers, then they don’t deserve to be champions.

Steeltough, Two things. First, the Steelers are black and YELLOW - The Saints are black and gold. Steeler fans say black and gold because they like the way it sounds. That doesn’t make it correct. Take a look at your “terrible towels”….they are yellow. And secondly, last I checked the Steelers have 5 titles, not 6. If pushed to answer I’d say the Steelers will win but they still have to play the game. Shoot your mouth off after.

People who live in Ohio and aren’t from Pennsylvania, but root for the Steelers are A) front-runners and/or B) attention whores. These are the same people that usually root for Michigan and the Yankees, too. They’re annoying and starving for someone to pay attention to them. As Hal McCoy pointed out, these same “die-hards” - strangely enough - don’t root for the Pirates. You guys suck. Since you hate Ohio so much, do the rest of us a favor and move to Pennsyl-tucky.

Mr. McCoy- I was a cradle Browns fan until Art “May He Roast in Hell” Modell moved the team to Baltimore. At the time of the move, I believe only 2 NFL (No Fan Loyalty) owners spoke up on behalf of the Browns remaining in Cleveland, Mr. Rooney of Pittsburgh & Mr. Wilson of Buffalo. I will always remember their support (even though it was unsuccessful) & cheer for them to be successufl when the Browns are not involved.

I just hope Browns fans were rooting for the Steelers over the Ravens. I know that as a Steelers fan I could only imagine hating the Ravens more if I was a Browns fan.

Aside from the Ravens, I’d lose respect for any Browns fan who roots for the Steelers against any other team.

Steeler fans lately have been considered the best sports fans. I beg to differ. It’s easy to be a fan when your team is as consistenly good as the Steelers are(that hurts to say). Yet Pittsburgh fans don’t embrace the Pirates, who are consistenly bad, which tells me that they are not the best sports fans. Try having your team taken away for several years, then return as a shadow of their former self, and be mediocre/bad for ten years. Cleveland fans are the best sports fans hands down.

I don’t think there’s a rule of sportsmanship that says you cheer for your division and conference once your team is out. When was the last time you bought an AFC sweatshirt? As for players wishing other teams good luck, I’m guessing that’s because they actually know each other personally and because they’re all making the big bucks and couldn’t care less about the rivalry - certainly not as much as the fans do.

You people are the biggest babys! Just jealous b/c ohio has no teams to brag about. Yes, I live in ohio and I have been a steeler all my life and now all my kids are steelers. we love them. no matter what kind of season they are having we always stand with them. We are not obnoxious we just love our team! Whats wrong with that? Oh one more thing. We also love Penn State.

Steeler43….how does it work kids? A kid knows Ravens isnt spelled with an I but an E. You root for your division but I dont know people who root for their rival. So Ohio St. should root for Michigan? Notre Dame roots for USC? I think you need to not just have a home team but become a true fan!

By Steeler43

January 22, 2009 11:23 PM | Link to this

What a bunch of pitiful hate noise over a freaking game. I miss the old Cleveland/Pittsburgh rivalry. Here’s how it works kids. You root for your home team, then your division, then your conference. You idiots lack any sort of respect for sportsmanship and the game. As big a rivalry as Pittsburgh and Ravins have you might have noticed the Baltimore players wishing the Steelers good luck after the game Sunday. They get it.

Ohio and Maryland fans read this: You will never be as tough as the black and gold. Its G O L D ! something you have lots of when you win 6 titles. The culture we have could be yours if only you had the type of hard work ethic that is tradition in the steel city. I’m truly sorry you may never see that day happen for your team. It starts with a decent family that knows how to treat champion gladiators. See, Football the Steelers way is not all about money. It’s about doing something great..

If you’re from Ohio cheering for the Steelers then you’re a traitor and no doubt jumped on the band wagon. I’m a Browns fan but at least can repect an Ohioan who roots for the Bengals. As a displaced clevelander living near pittsburgh, I am so sick and tired of the browns losing, however, i will always be a browns fan and I hope the cards kick the living @#$% out of the squealers. By the way the pittsburgh fans are nothing but a bunch of fat a*s whining bitches and Ben R is a drama queen who is addicted to pain killers. I loved that hit in the browns game when they put him on his whiney a*s.

A Steeler fan asked me recently why I was rooting for San Diego in the divisional round. He knew I was a Bengals fan. The answer, and I admit that I could have been kinder in my response, was “Because they’re playing the ——ing Steeelers!” I fully admit the Steelers as a team and an organization are a million miles beyond the Bengals. I respect the Steelers. If I didn’t, they wouldn’t be worthy of my hatred. But root for them? Maybe if they were playing the Nazis circa 1942. Maybe.

I am from the Burgh and I live for the Steelers…just like others of you are from Cleveland, or Cinci or just somewhere in Ohio and stand by your home team. Sports teams are fun because when we disagree on it there really aren’t any real consequences and nobody is wrong. It is good to bond and disagree over something is really rather meaningless in the big picture. Keep on rooting for the team you love…it is good to have something to root for in rough times. Go Steelers!

All these loser fans on here are just mad because Ohio teams suck. Why not cheer on a winning team. Steeler fans might be obnoxius but at least the are not bandwagon fans. Start cheering on winning teams and you might not be miserable sore losers.

As a die hard Browns Fan I would die and rot in HELL,before I would root for the Steelers. When we didn’t have a team I rooted for the Bengals.Never would I stoop low enough to root for the Steelers or Balitmore. We was once a power house of the A.F.C.and we will be again. The only thing that hurt us this year was poor coaching/play calling and Braylon(I can’t catch a ball )Edwards.I have faith that we will once again be a playoff contender. We just need to add some good players to the team.GOBROWNS

IF THE NFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME HAD BEEN CALLED THE SUPER BOWL ALL ALONG. CLEVELAND WOULD HAVE AT LEAST SEVEN TROPHIES AND THAT INCLUDES THE FIRST YEAR THEY JOINED AND HAD TO PLAY THE THEN CHAMPION EAGLES. AND KICKEDD THEIR BUTTS I MIGHT ADD,AND EVERYBODY ELSES FOR THE NEXT EIGHT OR NINE YEARS, BUT I GUESS BEING GOOD ONLY COUNTS IF YOU CALL IT THE SUPER BOWL.

I see this has devolved into the same useless dick-measuring that normally crops up. You’re all wasting your time and energy. As far as I’m concerned the Steelers can die in a horrific bus accident, but it’ll be decades before my future children will ever see the Browns in the playoffs.

And as for the Bengals.

Well, even you must know how much you suck, and you still finished ahead of the Browns in the division. That’s like beating a retarded kid at a Mathletes Competition.

Wow, some interesting opinions here. Yes, Nora you did steal our team. We did in 3 years what you couldn’t in 14. And since Cleveland is no prize what does that say about Baltimore? I’m sorry that Indy stole the Colts but what kind of resistance did you put up? How about none? What’s funny is that Baltimore stole both of their sports teams from other cities and they were both the Browns. I do hate the Steelers but at least I respect them. Maybe Baltimore can steal a basketball team.

Let’s see… As a Steelers fan, before the move, I rooted against the Browns… though I must add that a Browns/Cowboys game would have given me pause. Now? It’s the Ravens whom I despise. Conversely I would have hoped that Browns fans rooted for the Steelers last week. I mean, if you rooted for the Ravens over the Steelers? What’s that say about you as a Browns fan?

I root for the Browns over the Ravens, Bengals, Cowboys, Patriots, and Colts. At least for the time being.

Nice article, but being a fan since their inception,I not only saw them beat the Chicago Cardinals, but saw the “Cleveland” Rams play. Young fans should not confuse recognition of talent, with disloyalty. No one screamed louder than I against the hated Giants and Lions, but Half of the players from those teams are in the hall of fame. Face it without the Steelers half the fun is gone. Root against them but just enjoy the game, and stop being the “Hate” generation.

By Otis

I don’t know about that, Hal. There was a time when fans of any AFC (or NFC) team would root for the conference champs even though they were a rival of respective favorite. There are still a few players in major league sports who will root for the conference they are in even if it means rooting for a rival team. I remember when the NFC and AFC were more at odds than they are now. The conferences had different styles of play and types of players. Free agency changed a lot of that.

It’s quite obvious that the Steelers don’t need or want the Browns or the Bengals fans rooting for them - they’ve got plenty of their own fans and are doing rather well with them. Keep rooting for the homestate losers; the Steelers will just keep on kicking your a$$es every year.

Can you imagine what it would have been like in Browns country had the Browns been the team that captured that Ray Lewis led Super Bowl victory, as they should have.
