REDS NOTES
Trades likely as last-place Cincinnati confronts reality
Friday, June 29, 2007
> What do you think the Reds should do?
PHILADELPHIA — It isn't a surrender proclamation because nothing yet has happened, but it might be that the Cincinnati Reds are ready to swallow some reality: 16 games out of first place entering Thursday's action, five teams to pass in the National League Central, 84 games to accomplish it.
Scouts and club officials with other teams say that Reds General Manager Wayne Krivsky has made calls saying the Reds are looking to start dumping salary, ready to trade for top-shelf prospects as they peer toward the future.
Extras
Krivsky's policy is not to chat with the media about trade prospects, but he can clearly read the handwriting on the clubhouse wall, and it doesn't say anything about winning the division.
The guess is that there might be six players on the 25-man roster not included in trade talks: Aaron Harang, Homer Bailey, Josh Hamilton, Alex Gonzalez, Brandon Phillips and maybe Edwin Encarnacion.
Manager Jerry Narron isn't ready to do any towel tossing or white-flag waving, but he, too, is a realist, a frustrated realist.
"I was very honest with (owner) Bob Castellini about what I thought about the team when we first met, and I've appreciated his support," Narron said.
"What has frustrated me is that we're so close to being a competitive team," he added. "To lose so many close games at the end, it just takes its toll. It's a shame. It all comes back to pitching."
It's the bullpen — other than closer David Weathers — that is 9-16 with a 4.84 ERA, 13th in the league. It is the staggering inconsistency of starter Kyle Lohse (3-10, 5.02) and the less-than-glittery year by starter Bronson Arroyo (2-9, 5.14).
Of the starters, only Harang (8-2, 3.80) can be counted upon, and the starters are 21-32 (13-30 without Harang) with a 4.81 ERA, 12th in the league.
Yes, it probably is time to break up the Reds, probably with a sledgehammer.
On the hoof
Never, ever lose a bet to Ken Griffey Jr. The outfielder pays off, but in strange ways — like the time manager Lou Piniella won a bet with him during spring training when both were in Seattle.
"It was batting practice, and I had three swings left," Griffey said. "Lou bet me a steak that I couldn't hit a home run to each field on those three swings. I hit one to right and I hit one to center, but I missed the one to left. So I paid up."
Oh, did he. Piniella got his steak on the hoof. Griffey had a live cow put in Piniella's office while he was gone, "And when he walked in, there was the cow and some other stuff the cow had left after lifting its tail, plus he had slobbered everywhere. Lou got sick."
Then there was the time Griffey filled Piniella's office with lambs, but that's another story.
Working overtime
Of closer Weathers' 15 saves in 17 opportunities, eight have required him to get more than three outs, most in the majors. The closest is Seattle's J.J. Putz, who has six multi-inning saves out his 22.
Narron checked a red book in which he keeps what days he used relief pitchers and noted, "We used him four straight days (June 7-10), had an off day and used him the next day back. I wish we could use him every day."
Mr. All-Star
Balloting is over for the All-Star Game, and Griffey is about to be voted into the game for the 13th time, breaking a tie for third with Ozzie Smith. Cal Ripken Jr. was elected 17 times and Rod Carew 15.
While Griffey is appreciative, he takes it with a shrug and says he would rather spend the time with his family in the Bahamas.
"I just like to have fun," he said. "This game doesn't last forever, and my daddy (Ken Griffey Sr.) instilled one thing in me — have fun every game. Every game is closer to your last one, so don't worry about tomorrow or yesterday. I just want to play as hard as I can every day and never look back."
Quote of the day
Josh Hamilton on what he thought about Ryan Howard's 505-foot homer Wednesday that cleared Hamilton's head in center field by about 100 feet: "You go up to bat and try to do the same thing. I can't wait to get hold of one. I haven't yet."

You give me Dunn,Hamilton,JR in the outfield and M.Cabrera @3B,GONZ @SS and Phillips@2B, and Votto @1B AND HARANG,ARROYO,WILLIS AND BAILEY ON THE MOUND MOVE Loshe to bullpen AND TRADE for Gagne then this team will WIN . That means trade for M.Cabrera and D-train,and E.Gagne giving up Edwin and Hatteberg and Conine is not that bad of a deal. Try that out and see what happens to the Reds in the second half of the year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great job Jr for making the ALL-STAR GAME.

Don’t trade Jr or Dunn that is a waste of time and money cuz it wont help us win if u trade them cuz they are the only two that is getting the runs around, I do agree with hatteberg for starting picthers, but why trade dunn and jr for reliever help we need more then that to help us win.Damn all, spend money on great players then washed ones like miltin, try to trade for willis and cabeara from marlins. You all think speeds wins did the tigers and the cards have speed did the white sox,the d-back

If they’re not going to re-sign Lohse, deal him now. He’s a serviceable pitcher that would be a good third or fourth starter for most ballclubs - assuming he can keep his head straight.
Deal Griffey back to Seattle for a package that includes Felix Hernandez. At 21, he’s only going to get better and he’s still a couple years from arbitration.
Unload Hatteberg for a prospect. Plug Joey Votto in as the every day first baseman, with Conine filling in against tough lefties.

Fire Narron. His handling of the bullpen is a joke. Last night, he runs 3 kids out there and won’t let any of them finish anything. Tonight, in a game with a 4 run lead, he uses Weathers. Why didn’t he send the kids out tonight to get their confidence back? Why use Weathers in a game with a 4 run lead? I honestly blame him more than the personnel for the problems of the bullpen. How does McBeth feel after giving up leads the past 2 nights? Let the kid finish something.

The only guys that need traded would be Hattie or Conine. Yes, they are solid guys that can help contenders, but we will not be contending anytime soon; don’t worry. Votto deserves a chance to play, as well. He has more than earned it.
LEAVE DUNN ALONE. Saavy GMs would only give us a potporri assortment of junk pitchers (which we already have) for him anyway. I have never seen this guy play as well as he is right now—ever. Plus, he plays everyday which is rare for a Reds outfielder.

I would also like to see Dunn traded and if the deal is right, I have no problem trading Jr. too. With the end of Milton’s contract, we can be big spenders with those 3 deals gone.

Lots of changes. Lohse gone; Lvingston taking his spot. Stanton should be released/traded. Castro should be released/traded. Keppinger should be added to the roster. Votto should be here as the 1B and Hatteberg traded with Conine sharing 1B until he too can be traded. Both Hatte and Conine should be resigned as FAs after the season as bench players ONLY. Starters should be Bailey, Harang, Arroyo and 2 from (Livingston, EZ. Belisle and Dumatrait plus trades made

Let the “fire sale” begin! As far as untouchables on the everyday roster, I would only keep Hamilton, and Phillips. The pitchers, keep Harang, Arroyo, and Bailey. They would be a good threesome to build a strong rotation around. Junior, and Dunner’s stock is as high as it’s ever been.. Trade both for good..PITCHING, PITCHING, PITCHING! Whatever they do, they need to get quality this time. Hold off until the deadline if needed. Can’t afford another trade fiasco like we had last year!

Here are my thoughts 1. Krivsky brought in Ross, Phillips, Arroyo, and Gonzalez 2. Trade Dunn for relievers with major league track records 3. I am not really a big fan of Narron handling the pitching 4. Don’t Fire Krisky (Even though he has made some bonehead trades) 5. Either Hatteberg or Preferably Conine get traded for Pitching 6. Call up Votto and see what this kid can do in the Majors. 7. Keep These players for sure. Bailey, Cueto, Phillips, Harrang, Arroyo,Belisle,Weathers,Hamilton

Move Loshe to the bullpen. He pitches well until like the fifth inning. He could be the set up man the Reds have been looking for all of this time.

There are too many things wrong with this team to point one finger. However, start with the top. Narron is a re-tread, much like out pitching staff ALWAYS is. Start with getting rid of him bring in someone who will find creative ways to win with our junk players. Heck, even Boone tried this. Even though he never won with his junk players at least he showed effort. Narron stinks. How about Larkin for Mananger ? TODAY !!!

Now Ricky Stone is up and his track record is as bad or worse than Victor Santos. My guess is that Saarloos would actually pitch better (better attitude) at the major league level than AAA. I don’t believe that any knowledgeable baseball person would pick Stone over Saarloos thinking Stone is the future of this team. This has become absurd.

Check the Reds 1982, 101 loss, roster. Looks to me like that team had better players than the 2007 team has. Probably this CURRENT REDS ENSEMBLE BECOMES WORST TEAM IN REDS HISTORY(138+ years). On Opening Day(I’m paraphrasing here) Bob Castellini said the sportswriters and media has us picked to be the 29th or 30th(best) team. Said something like- we like that… Inferring a challenge to his team. Sadly it appears, he along with Reds management, didn’t have a clue. I fear Krivsky making trades.

The correct answer you morons is, keep the core of the team. Bring up pitching prospects for the second half of the season and see who can pitch. If Votto can play first, save some money and lose Hattie and Conine. Dunn and Griffey are not that exspensive in todays market and the $6.75 beers will pay for them. Look at spending some money on a Starting Pitcher for next year. This is baseball you dimwits, patience and building a team is how you get a winner.

You all are idiots. Trade Kyle Loshe and get Cy Young. Other teams aren’t going to trade their great players for our crap. Name me 5 guys who can score 80 runs and knock in 80 and I will trade Adam Dunn for them even up. Of course they will cost more than Dunn, but you brain surgeons don’t care. Griffey is one of the top 20 players in baseball this year. Who replaces him and how much do they cost? Freel? He is always slacking and hurt. He will be lucky to get 80 games in this year.

I think you keep Harang, Belisle, Homer Bailey, Griffey, Encarnacion, Hatteberg, Hamilton, and Phillips. You can trade the rest. Keep Griffey: You need some pop left in the lineup with Dunn gone. Keep Hatteberg: Good hitter, need someone to mentor Votto. Keep Belisle: Good fifth starter, can move to the pen as a long man if we get some great SP. Keep Phillips: Future Star of the team. Keep Hamilton: Fielding alone is enough to keep him, even without the power.

Trade: Dunn, Hatteburg, Lohse, Stanton(when healthy), & Conine for the best deals you can get. If Jr truely is unhappy here and wants out, I would reluctantly trade him. I’d rather see him retire a Red but we owe it to him to have a shot at a ring if so desires. Prospects I would look at aquiring are: SS Brandon Wood, OF Terry Evans & SP Nick Adenhart (Angels), C Jerrod Saltalamatchia (Braves), CP Jon Meloan (Dodgers), SP Joba Chamberlain & SP Tyler Clippard (Yankees) just to name a few.

Fire Jerry Narron-WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE! He obviously can’t manage-he’s lost on every team he’s been with.I am so tired of him giving praises to all of the teams and opposing players that pound the Reds into oblivion. It’s like he’s in a love-fest with the other teams and trying to make his team not feel so bad that they just got killed on the field because “gee, the other team is just so darn good.”Pay big $ to get Joe Morgan to manage the Reds and hire Jeff Brantley to be the pitching coach.

Sure a fire sale is the way to go when your team isn’t doing very well. But what about consistency year in and year out? Why mess with the hitters when it’s the pitching that’s terrible? History shows that the teams that use the same players and lineups game after game are the teams that have good years.

Several pieces of this Reds puzzle need to remain intact: Harang, BP, Homer, Hamilton, EE, Freel & Belisle. I have always been a HUGE Griffey fan, but due to his stock being as high as it has been since his M’s days, see what the M’s or the Braves would offer (2 teams he would not veto). I have always accepted the notion of paying more for a position player than a pitcher but I think I’ve changed my mind. The Reds have to have pitching, good pitching, NOW!!

At this point, I believe Dunn and Griffey are at the top of their value. Trade them now, while you still have the chance. Dunn will eventually return to his old ways, and Griffey needs the opportunity to play for a team that has a playoff shot. Don’t look now, but Seattle is 10 games over .500 and has a shot at the playoffs. Think they’d be interested? Hmmmm…..no way I would trade Bailey, Phillips, Hamilton, Votto, Jay Bruce, or Johnny Cueto. Any one else is expendable…

Trade Dunn, Hatteberg and Arroyo or Lohse to LA for Chad Billingsley, Jonathan Broxton and Matt Kemp or Andre Eithier. All three are 23 or younger and Major League ready. Call up Joey Votto and start him at first. Platoon Norris Hopper and Matt Kemp or Andre Eithier in left. Broxton is closer material with a fastball in the mid to high 90’s with a slider and a split-finger pitch. Billingsley is 23 and has a fastball that is from the low to mid 90’s a curve, slider, and change.

It will soon be the All Star break and who on this team has improved & consistently performed since the start of the season. (Aaron H, Homer B, Edwin E, Brandon P, Josh H, Scott H, Jeff C, Norris H, David W, Marcus M and last but not least Ken Griffey Jr the real glue to this team). Why can’t Junior be a part of a winning World Series team here in Cincinnati. Build around these guys.

I’ve been a Reds fan for the better part of 50 years and am fed up with this team, management and their lack of playing baseball the way it should be played. They believe the game is a Home Run Derby contest and defense, pitching and moving the runner along is a thing of the past. There are times you have to play small ball. We swing for the fences and usually end up with a K and our runner in scoring position might as well be home stedding. Build with youth and keep them in CINCY.

Fans are so fickle, with short memories. Arroyo was solid last year, but a “bum” this year? I would bring him back for 2009, if money allows. I actually like many of the Reds personnel and think they could win in time. I would seek trade of Griffey, as that would free up money and give him a shot to win again before his career ends. He’s having a good year, but he’s been fragile with the Reds. Yes, and trade Adam Dunn for pitching help. Encarnacion is expendable

This franchise desperately needs a young closer that would allow Weathers to pitch the 7th and 8th innings. I think that should be our primary target, along with young starting pitching. We need to give the kids a chance, though, instead of running retreads like Lohse, Mays, Ramon Ortiz, etc., out there to get pounded every fifth day. I would not trade Harang, Arroyo, Belisle, Bailey, Hamilton, Phillips, Gonzalez and Encarnacion. I think we also need to hold onto either Griffey or Dunn.

I agree with trading just about anyone, although Votto and the other minor leaguers need to prove they can play at the major league level before we start letting go of Hatteberg, etc. If a team wants Griffey, he is at his highest potential trade value, plus he may get to play again for a contending team before he retires. That’s not going to happen in Cincy.

Hal, It is hard for a team to win with 2 starters with 9+ losses before the All-Star Break. I am concerned that Narron’s handling of the starters (Harang and Arroyo) and their 120+ pitches per game has caught up with Arroyo and may harm Harang. The truth, this is a better team than 19 games under .500. I wouldn’t trade Harang, Bailey, Griffey, Hamilton, Encarnacion, Phillips or Freel. Everybody else should be fair game.

I agree with Narron on one thing - they lose a lot of close games. That means a total overhaul isn’t needed. Trade a couple of big names (Dunn, Griffey) in combo with mediocre starters (Belisle, Lohse). For 1 - a speed guy and 2 - a solid bullpenner or two(not an old guy or rookie). Bring up the Bats starters Dumatrait and Livingston (or use Germano) to start (and Votto at 1B). I love Griffey but I’d like to see him get another post-season chance before he’s done.

Different Reds GM’s and owners have been saying for YEARS that they are rebuilding and will get better(remember after we get the new stadium?) When will it ever happen?? I’m so frustrated I don’t know what to say. Anyone on the Reds could be traded. No one has helped the Reds win-not Griffey, not Dunn, not Harang, not anyone. I think some of it has to do with lack of motivation and pride. I don’t care what all the players say about how they just want to go out and win, I just don’t see it.

Patience ! Let it play out. I trust Castellini’s integrity and competitive nature. We forget that it’s his and Krivsky’s first time around the block as true exec’s in charge. The franchise they inherited was in horrible shape. The team and is in flux and the farm system needs rebuilding. In the end it’s the only way to restore the franchise to one that the fans will buy into.Krivsky’s done a fair job.We forget that the Washington National trade was for on paper talent and the dumping of salary.

I agree with one of the earlier comments about trading for speed. Pitching, timely hitting, and speed win championships. Home runs are fun to watch, but you don’t win a championship with a bunch of sluggers. I’d trade 10 Adam Dunns for one Ichiro.

Follow-up on Krivski: Worst trade? Justin Germano for Rheal Cormier. Cormier’s track record was all over the place. However, it didn’t start with the trade. It started with the fact that Krivski wouldn’t give Germano a chance to show what he could do even though they desperately needed pitching. He gave people like Joe Mays a chance instead. The trade with the Nationals happened in part because they released Josh Hancock at the beginning of the year. He helped St. Louis.

I would hate see Ryan Freel go. This the guy they need that plays the game the way it should be played. They need to trade Scott Hatteberg, Kyle Lohse, Todd Coffey, Chad Moeller, and Victor Santos. They need to trade Hatteberg to a team that will give a decent pitcher, aka the Yankees. Then they need to call up Joey Votto to play first place. I dont even know why they have Chad Moeller he is terrible and is a waste of money.

1.Release Santos. 2. Bring up Saarloos. He’s pitched better this year (subtract two outings and his era is under three) than most pitchers on the major league club. 3. Need bullpen? Arroyo, Belisle, and Lohse to bullpen, but work on trading Loshe and entertain offers for Arroyo. 4.FIND OUT WHAT LIVINGSTON, DUMATRAIT, AND GOSLING CAN DO IN THE ROTATION. If they can’t make it then get rid of them. 5.Let Narron go. 6.Krivski has put together the worst team in the MLB. ?

I’d hate to see Hatteberg go. He could remain as a great pinch hitter. He sees more pitches and makes better contact to the opposite fields better than they’ve had in years. Keep the five aforementioned and if you want to see Griffey, he WAS a HOF and go to Cooperstown in a few years and pay a visit. Another game was lost last night by his throwing and fielding; weak, off-target throw missing the ccutoff man.

The owner stinks. The GM stinks. Think of last year’s giveaway of Kearns, etc. for literally nothing. The manager cannot manage. The pitching coach cannot coach pitchers.
The city of Cincy went for the big lies with Lindner. They are going for them again with Castellini, whose silence indicts him more than what he has said-a billionaire who “cannot afford” salary increases.

I agree with not putting the 5 or 6 mentioned on the trade block, but I disagree with Griffey, he’s still my favorite player, fun to watch, and he’s having a great year. Lohse and Belisle should be pitching for the Bats by now and Livingston and Dumatrait need to get their chance, I mean come on, they couldn’t be worse than Lohse or Belisle right now. I think its plain to see, we need pitching worse than anything right now, and they shoud have thought about this before they signed “the Unc”

Our best bet to trade Dunn is to the NL West. That division is seriously lacking in power and strong in pitching. In a perfect world, we would get rid of Dunn and get a good young pitcher from the Dodgers, Padres, Diamondbacks, or Rockies in return. I just hope we can get rid of him soon. Everyday I get more and more frustrated with him, his K’s, his sub-par fielding, and his lack of effort. Dunn couldn’t care less about major league baseball… he’d rather be playing football or bass fishing.

Too bad no team will be foolish enough to pick up Dunn, his monster salary, and of course his league leading 98 strikeouts.

Cincinnati has not had decent pitching since 1990. They’ve had 17 years to fix this…and nothing has been done.
I still plan on taking my family to a few more games this summer…plan to purchase them from a scalper off the street. No reason to pay full ticket price.
Ho hum…another losing season for the Reds.

I like the comment former Red George Foster had on the radio pre-game last weekend when he said the Reds should trade for speed in the lineup. When the Reds won in ’70s, 1990, ‘94-‘95, and ‘99 they had a lot of speed to cause havoc on the basepaths for opposing pitchers.

Over two years ago, I began advocating that the GABP was a band box and my 90 year old Grandma could hit one out of it. Last night, on Sportstalk, Paul Daugherty started up on the Reds doing something about the conditions at the ball park with regards to the fences. No pitcher worth anything would risk his era comming here to work. Wouldnt it be worth removing a couple thousand seats to move the fences back than to keep losing on pitchers not throwing down in and away from bajo hitters?

There are 4 players I would not trade, Harang, Bailey, Phillips & Hamilton. Everyone else, fair game if it is a good trade. I wouldn’t trade any of the big boys unless it was a really good trade, unlike the dumping we have seen in the past. Go Reds
