Krivsky out, Jocketty in as GM

Reds' new boss, a three-time MLB executive of the year, says 'we can still win this division.'

Walt Jocketty, with his soft smile and white hair, doesn't appear to be a vindictive person, but he revealed a small piece of his competitive personality at the media conference announcing his elevation to Director of Baseball Operations/General Manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

"Trust me, me and Dusty Baker are very motivated, both guys with a vendetta, a little chip on our shoulders," he said.

That's because Jocketty was fired as GM of the St. Louis Cardinals after last season, and Baker was fired as Chicago Cubs manager after the 2006 season. Both teams are rivals of the Reds in the National League Central, making them targets for Jocketty and Baker.

GM Wayne Krivsky was fired Wednesday, April 23, by CEO Bob Castellini and replaced by Jocketty, with whom Castellini worked in St. Louis. Said Jocketty, "I still think we can win this division."

Under Jocketty, the Cardinals were in the playoffs seven times in 13 years after suffering through a six-year playoff drought before his arrival. Jocketty believes he can do in Cincinnati what he did in St. Louis when he took over late in 1994, in less time.

"With the history of this franchise, it is very close to the situation I had in St. Louis," he said. "It has a winning tradition, great fans, a great community — but they hadn't won in St. Louis in a long time, either. There are a lot of similarities to the St. Louis and Cincinnati situations, storied franchises with great traditions.

"And I think this organization is in better shape right now than St. Louis was, and it won't take as long to turn things around here," he added.

Jocketty plans no immediate shakeups, either on the playing roster or the front office, until he thoroughly looks and tinkers under the hood.

"We need to change the culture and the mind-set, in the clubhouse and the front office, that we can win," he said. "You need a positive approach and not look at the negatives. There is talent here, plus we have a proven manager (Dusty Baker). It is a matter of changing the focus to a winning culture."

Castellini, in a glum mood on this day, said Krivsky was fired basically because of the team's 9-12 start. He added that some of Krivsky's player moves that left the team paying bags of money to players no longer on the roster entered into the dismissal, too.

Then he put some pressure on Jocketty's shoulders when he said, "We've come to a point where, well, we're just not going to lose any more."

Jocketty laughed that one off and said, "I'm not worried about that because I'm doing this because I want to do it, not that I need to do it."

He has been in baseball for more than 33 years and was Major League Baseball Executive of the Year three times while with the Cardinals.

After St. Louis fired him, Jocketty was hired by the Reds as a special consultant to Castellini, and the handwriting was on the executive bathroom walls — Jocketty was the next Reds GM.

Castellini didn't plan to make the move until Krivsky's contract expired after this season, but when the Reds limped out of the gate, the impatient Castellini acted.

Asked his baseball philosophy, Jocketty said, "Basic philosophy, win."

And he added, "I try to build a team with pitching and defense. Scoring runs is about however your team is built — power, the ballpark, running game, smallball. Generally, though, pitching and defense. That sounds easy, pretty simple, but there is a lot to it."

Bronson Arroyo in his last three start has throw one ball in the 90’s, his fast ball is 85-88. When he was winning his fast ball was in the low 90’s. Is their something wrong with his arm. He can do middle relief in blowout until he get his act together. Give Affeldt a turn or two. We need a left hander in the rotation anyway.

Wow, what a surprise. Aside from one bad trade (the Lopez / Kearns deal for a pitcher with a bunk arm), Krivsky has made some really good moves. I have been impressed with all of them except that one. The Reds finally have some starting pitching, a closer, and some prospects. Brandon Phillips? Josh Hamilton? Those moves were both pure Krivsky and they’ve paid off nicely. So what if they can’t hit right now? I guess I’m excited about Jockettey, but I thought Krivsky was doing a good job.

Jocketty will make some changes. I just hope he doesn’t clean out the minor league system to do it. Another solid starter would help. Call up Jay Bruce and trade Adam Dunn and some dead wood for pitchers.

The Reds will never until they get some pitching! All of the other players are in place.

Why not give Affeldt a chance to start? The rotation needs a lefty and he couldn’t do worse than Fogg or Belisle.

Now, If we could just correct the line up and centerfield situation. Eliminating the buddy routine plus honoring some contracts wouldn’t be a bad thing either, now that sins our finding their keepers.

Win the division? What an assinine question. That’s hilarious! 4th at the very best. Bill is correct…can they stay out of the basement is the real question. The Reds have one good proven pitcher, Harrang. The new guys are hot but unproven. Bailey is certainly not the answer. Bronson is burnt out and it’s only April! And the Reds have the same offensive malaise they had for several years…can’t-score-runs-in-the-clutch-itis. Next question.

I’ll tell you what, the problem with the Reds and all of baseball is guarenteed contracts. How many players in baseball get huge contracts and never do another positive thing for their team? Produce or your gone, just like the real world, is the way it should be.

It’s April, so yes, they can still win the division. But Arroyo has to get his act together and the offense must come around. It would be nice to get one more solid arm in the bullpen - Coffey and Fogg are terrible, Weathers (when healthy) is shakey and Burton has come down a notch, but is still good. Lincoln and Affeldt have been solid. Cordero is awesome (when he gets a chance to pitch).

With a complete reevaluation of the pitching staff. Focus on the current staff; the staff at AAA and don’t be afraid to make a trade if it will improve the current pitching staff. Then and only then can this team improve. Bronson Arroyo has failed as a starter while our two young guns have done great. Maybe more young guns in AAA should be called up and given a chance.

A better question would be can the Reds stay out of last place (again).
