The Cincinnati Bengals made the playoffs for the first time in a decade and a half in 2005. That gave fans reason to hope that the team had completely rebounded from its placement in the depths of NFL football.
Now look at them. Shipping off unruly players (who are then suspended by the NFL, again). Welcoming malcontents to minicamp. Finishing under .500, and likely staying there with all of their issues.
Extras
Well, at least there's another pro team in Cincinnati, and optimism was running high before the season. Dusty Baker is a major baseball managerial name, and he was wearing a Reds uniform. Walt Jocketty was clearly preparing to take over as general manager, and the roster of young, promising players was very impressive.
Oops. The Reds are hosting the world champion Boston Red Sox this weekend as one of the worst teams in the National League. Aaron Harang pitched a gem on Friday, June 13, to improve to 3-9.
Fans of Cincinnati professional sports teams have been teased. They thought the Bengals would no longer be embarrassing and that the Reds would be strong this season. Both are false.
NFL games sell out in their sleep, so the Bengals probably don't face an attendance issue, but fewer people are going to games at Great American Ball Park.
When will Reds and Bengals fans finally be able to rejoice? That is, without checking for the catch.

Of course Griffey for the most part doesn’t care, Huber. Since free agency was introduced in the 70’s all aspects about the beauty and excitement of baseball have been removed by the elements of greed and the lust for money, money, and more money….The American way. I was a die hard fan growing up in the early and mid-sixties and I could name you all the players on each team. No more, I wouldn’t walk across the street to watch a game, even if it was free. Still love the game though.

Mr.Nagel , Should the bengals have kept he who was shipped off? Pro teams are full of malcontents{big money = big baby}.Are you a disgruntled brownstain fan stuck here in the ‘nati? Or the approaching deadline has your panties in a bunch with nothing to write about? As for the Reds, Rome was not built in a day.Mr C. has a fine crop of young guns and a tweak or two will have this team contending for the next 5-7 years. Go back to whatever non pro city you came from and cover bad mitten.

the reds have no management people at all. who had the idea to bring in Cory Patterson the pitching coach has been with the Reds for the last three mangers (all losing seasons)Dunn needs coaching bad or get rid of him as well as Griffey, Patterson, Bailey, Fogg, Belisle, Griffey is a hall of fame player but everone can see he is hurting the team as well as the other players mention.

well i beleive the reds will be winning within the next couple of years. they have an owner who is commited to winning and they have a lot of young talent. even though i’m losing my patience and want to see a winner now i think we’ll have to wait another year or two before the reds will give us something to cheer about. as far as the bengals go…they they never cease to dissapoint me. we have a cheap, moronic owner, and a coach who seem to get outcoached quite often (what’s new). we do have #9!

I was born and raised a fan of cincinnati sports, I now live in seattle and will always continue to love my teams. I belive they will dissapoint again and again, but I have to love them, if you don’t you are not a fan. The bengals try, we draft strong good players (recently), but injeries and bad charaters have killed us. I will never stop defending my team, and I have had to out here. GO BENGALS and REDS.

Pro sports are nothing more than a greedy racket pimped by gambling interests in this country. I am sick of the boorish “me-first” attitude of the players, extortionate owners who threaten cities into building Taj Mahal-like stadiums and the childish fans who are becoming more and more like the sterotypical English soccer thugs. If I want to watch some sports competition, I will support my local high school teams and small colleges (as opposed to corporations Ohio State, Inc.)

No, its not Griffey’s fault the Reds haven’t won. No, the Reds haven’t surrounded Griffey with a solid team since he’s been here. But, Griffey has missed a lot of games and has not put up great numbers, yet he gets paid to perform. Why should the Reds pay him enough to get 2-3 Players of his current caliber only to see him lollygag to first base everytime, year after year, because he’s afraid of pulling a hamstring? We all know Griffey was great in Seattle, but I am Reds fan!

”..To lay the blame for the Reds season at Griffey’s feet is a crock of BS. You win as a team and you lose as a team.” I hear a lot of people using the above to justify the 7, going on 8, consecutive losing seasons with Griff and Dunn on the Team. There is some truth to it, however, with a certain amount of limited money to be spent on the TEAM, those who get paid the most, are supposed to do the most. Dunn and Griffey make more than the rest of the offense. so we expect more.

The Ben-JAILS will continue to embarrass themselves and Zinzinnati as long as they bring in and keep curs. We feel very sad for the players who get an under the umbrella association of being bad because they carry an ID saying “Ben-JAILS”. 95% of the Bengals are hard working talented straight living professionals How terrible it must be for they and their familieis to have to endure the perception in their communities they are a part of thugs and unappreciative fools. Especially the children

The benGALS have been a joke for the past 20 years. They have done absolutely NOTHING recently to make me think that things will change in the future.

I disagree .I think the reds want to win ,the bengals no .With Mr Brown all he cares about is money if the checks keep rolling in he is happy . Mr CASTELLINI is heads and shoulders above Mr Brown you can tell by the off season moves the reds made . The Bengals donot have a clue as to how to put a winning team together .
By the voice of reason!

seriously, guy. where did you go to school? missouri, right? a fine school, but your allegiances lie elsewhere and you should mention it on a fairly regular basis.
most of the beat writers at this paper are in fact, not from here, and are emotionaly invested in another, rival, franchise.
kellen winslow held out every bit as much as chad did. when i start reading about that in the headlines of this paper then you guys have done your job.
start by hiring a bengal fan to cover that beat!

I am not embarrassed by being a fan of Cincinnati pro teams. I will always root for the Bengals and Reds no matter what. Mike Brown and Bob Castellini have two things in common: They are both very rich and they both want to WIN, believe me. It’s easy to be a front runner and support ‘evil empires’ like the Patriots or the Red Sox, but I’m not one to take the easy way out. True Cincinnati fans like myself will continue to be loyal because this is who we are and where we come from.

To lay the blame for the Reds season at Griffey’s feet is a crock of BS. You win as a team and you lose as a team. I notice that you didn’t mention an anemic pitching staff, a lack of a decent farm club (face the dragons are NOT the answer), a lack of a solid scouting organization, a front office that is stuck in a negative mentality, etc. Yeah, I see how it’s Junior’s fault…

The Bengals were no better in their 11-5 season (or whatever their record was). They simply had the easiest schedule in NFL history that season. Check it out.

I agree with HuberTucky….Griffey has not ever done anything to help bring the Reds back to winning form. There are a lot of people who can’t seem to let go and admit Griffey is done. He WAS a great player, but never great as a Cincinnati Red. A lot of people say let Dunn go, but look at the stats! He leads the team in a lot of catagories. Getting better as an outfielder too. I just hope the apathetic example Griffey and others set doesn’t wear off on the Votto’s and Bruce’s.

Griffey junior is certainly not done embarrassing fans with his indifferent attiutde and lame pathetic play. You’d think he’d also be embarrassing himself enough that he needs to drop down in the batting order, sit out more games, and stop flailing at fastballs he can no longer catch up with. Yesterday — strike out, pop out, strike out, tap into double play…5 outs in 4 at-bats. Terrible. Pathetic. Tiresome. Embarrassing. And he NEVER looks like he cares. NEVER! I’m tired of it. Is he?
