McEntire-Clarkson tour blasts off at Nutter Center

FAIRBORN — Reba McEntire, the country music superstar and actress, and Kelly Clarkson, the Grammy-winning pop-rock singer and 2002 "American Idol" winner, launched their limited-run "Two Voices, Two Worlds" tour Thursday night to a sell-out crowd at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center.
Launched? Let's say they blasted off, as into the stratosphere.
Extras
And they did it without fancy sets, fog machines or fireworks. They even did it without costume changes, which McEntire fans have come to expect.
No, all the pyrotechnics were saved for the women's vocalizations, which when combined at times reached out-of-this-world proportions.
The concert tour, which will hit 15 towns before its conclusion next month, grew out of a CMT cable television "Crossroads" special that paired the two singers last summer, though they had shared a stage once before when McEntire appeared as a guest on the first season of "American Idol" to sing with then-contestant Clarkson.
The tour brings together performers of different generations who have been primarily associated with different musical genres. Though side-by-side, their stylings had more similarities than might have been expected.
In terms of their age, let's just say that five years before Kelly was born in 1982, Reba was a full-fledged member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Let's say it, and forget it, because McEntire made it irrelevant Thursday night.
Dressed in matching tight black jeans and similar black sequined-fronted tank tops, the fit and trim McEntire came nowhere close to assuming any matron-like persona beside the younger Clarkson.
But while age didn't show, experience did.
Clarkson, who seemed a little star struck, had moments in the vocal stratosphere. But her performance level was more erratic than McEntire's, who hit a high mark from the start and stayed there.
McEntire exhibited a honed mastery of the material — be it Clarkson's or her own — and a professional command of the stage. Clarkson will undoubtedly learn a lot in the coming month.
The women made their way through nearly two dozen songs in a little more than 90 minutes, concluding with a three-song encore.
Clarkson's biggest hits were all there, along with some of McEntire's most popular, including "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia," "The Greatest Man I Never Knew," "Is There Life Out There?," "Still," "I'm a Survivor" and "Fancy."
The duet "Does He Love You" (which McEntire originally recorded with Linda Davis and sang with Clarkson in her "American Idol" appearance) was a favorite of the 9,694-strong audience, with the singers achieving ever high levels of dramatic intensity.
Being opening night, the show wasn't as tight as it surely will be after a couple of performances, though McEntire seemed as if she'd been doing it for years.
Warming up the crowd with a 30-minute routine of self-deprecating humor was actress and comedian Melissa Peterman.
For much of Peterman's anecdotal material, she cast herself as a fan and would-be friend to Clarkson and McEntire, with whom she worked for six years, playing the character of Barbra Jean on McEntire's WB/CW sitcom, "Reba."

I,wasn’t able to go to ya’lls concert in Fay. north carolina,I ain’t able to do all that walking, and I wasn’t about to go riding in no wheel chair! I can’t buy up front seats, it wouldn’t have done me much good.I’ve been a big fan, and I reckin’ we pretty much come from the same background. When you was at the Grand Ol’ Opry, was James Cecil Dickens just like he is on stage?he’s my 3rd. 4th or even maybe 5th couysin, I ain’t sure which. The Reba and Kelly concert was a dream come true. I still can’t believe I was really at a KELLY CLARKSON AND REBA MCENTIRE CONCERT! I am a die hard Reba fan since, love Kelly as well. It was wonderful to see them in person. My sisters went with me,and it was my sister’s 16th birthday present. Kelly has a powerhouse voice and was great to watch, but Reba was the real performer of the night. I loved watching the emotion that Reba shows when she sings! definitely memories that will last a lifetime!

Concert was great. The 2 women have dynamic voices. As for comments about the sound and the parking;it won’t be improved anytime soon. Nutter is run by WSU who view it as an athletic facility. To have good sound there they must improve the ceiling by installing sound tiles or walls. This will absorb the reverb or echo heard there. I’m sure each touring show tries the best they can. Parking could improve only if WSU lets them get rid of the pond in back. This would add parking and more entrances.

What a WONDERFUL concert!! This is the first concert I (37) have been to, ever. The tickets were a Christmas gift from my husband! The concert exceeded my expectations! Reba and Kelly were excellent together. What a grand pair of voices! Melissa Peterman was so funny. The encore was worth waiting all night for!! We had no trouble parking or getting out at the end. I had a blast with my sister, sister-in-law and a good friend (a super-fan). I would do it all again in a heartbeat!!

Reba and Kellie were totally awesome together…As we read the comments on the sound system, we agree there were times, when we could not hear their voices, only the band. we also agree that some of the attendants, includng parking personnel were quite rude. But the performance of the two, Reba and Kellie was well worth the inconvenience of the parking and the rudeness of the personnel. We had a wonderful time thanks to our daughter Shanda, for the tickets.

This was the best concert I have ever attended. Reba and Kelly are two great volcalist. I actually went to see Reba but must say I came out of the concert being a fan of Kelly’s also. Both of them sing very well together and I’m sure Kelly will learn a lot from Reba during their tour. I do wish they both would of taken a couple of their own songs and performed them individually. I must say there were times when the band was so loud that you were unable to here the words they were singing.

This was a fantastic concert! I can’t thank my daughter enough for buying the tickets. I have seen both performers live before. Their voices together are stunning! Their mutual respect and admiration for each other was very evident. The set list was perfect. The 12 piece band really did a great job. The sound system was great. The acoustics at Nutter are poor as most arena venues are. Fortunately we were sitting halfway between the mixer board and the stage where the sound was outstanding.

My daughter Elizabeth (21) and I went together. We had such an amazing time. She is the Kelly fan and I am a die hard Reba fan but together they are wonderful. We were a bit dissapointed that they did not have shirts with both of them on them, you had to buy one of each artist. And as for all the parking comments I agree, it was the worst. Loved the show and loved being there with my daughter.

This concert was my first time seeing both Reba and Kelly.I was blown away!Reba is such an amazing woman as a performer, artist, and person. She has such a distinct voice and I just love her!Kelly is my inspiration. She is such a wonderful performer! Her voice is so strong and controled.I also love the fact that she is so down to earth. She isnt one of those way too skinny celebrities that tries way too hard, shes just natural. Both of them have wonderful voices! LOVED IT!Loved Melissa Peterson!

My niece & I attended the concert just as we did in October 94 (same venue for Reba) when John Berry & John Michael Montgomery opened for her & I can understand no props for Rebas songs like she did but I was still sad about that a little. However the performances were wonderful.Especially the songs I wasnt familiar with (Patti Griffin song was beautiful)The opening was powerful !!!! Its sad that this is only a 15 city tour because not many people will get to experience what we all did

I knew when I saw the show CrossRoads on CMT that they were EXCELLENT 2gether,their FRIENDSHIP defently shined through. But putting both of them on tour together was diffently a POWERHOUSE! Norvell Diffently has him a couple of powerful SuperStars that would out last time.. my boyfriend -David and I could not have had a better time.
Great Job it was a long time coming,But SMASHING PERFECTION takes Time.

This concert was amazing! Very much worth the ticket prices (which weren’t that bad!) The Show was powerful from beginning (the combo of “Sweet Dreams” by Patsy Cline and ” Sweet Dreams (Are made of this)” by the eurythmics) to end (a wonderful rock-sounding version of “Fancy”). The show brought tears to my eyes at times and others I was screaming so loud that I thought I would explode! Thank you to Reba and Kelly for a truely amazing first concert experience! What a gift!

Hi Staci. It was pretty “cool” and yes, I am showing my age, to see old and young dancing together! I took my 16 year old daughter and she’s been listing to Reba music today on her I-POD. Maybe it’s time for me to invest in one also?

The Reba and Kelly concert was absolutely amazing!!! This was my 16th birthday present from my sister and it was the best i could ask for. Reba and Kelly together have such beautiful harmonization. To see all the different people come was so cool. There were grandparents, parents, kids and people of all ages that you could look around and see they were having a great time. I went to the concert last night as a major Kelly fan but i left as a Reba fan too.

Anyone who didn’t rate the night as “a special gift” to themselves and to this community needs to see a shrink. We’re talking about two premier performers coming to Dayton to kick off a major concert tour. Get positive! It was great to see the age diversity of those who attended. I saw 8 to 90 year olds singing, dancing and enjoying the night with two entertainers who shared their heart and souls via song. Those who left as Reba fans became Kelly fans and vice versa. Goodbye generation gap!

One of the best Christmas presents I bought my wife this year were the tickets to the “Reba & Kelly” concert at the Nutter Center Last night! What a show! My wife is a huge Reba fan and it was her first time to see Reba live in concert. As for me, I’ve seen pretty much all the superstars i.e. Elvis, Willie, Wayne Newton, Kenny Rogers just to name a few. Reba ranks right up there behind Elvis as far as true star power. As far as the parking-getting in and out-what a NIGHTMARE!!!

The Reba / Kelly Concert was AWSOME! PARKING ATTENDENTS ARE VERY RUDE!!! Heaven forbid you ask an usher their a question some of them not all of the ushers are VERY RUDE! The sound system trouble WAS the fault of Reba’s battery dying in her mic. And also her sound team. Those of you who call reba and kelly fat, mabe it is YOU that need a new mirror! BOTH LADIES PUT ON ONE HECK OF A SHOW! And it was opening night after all of the tour there are bound to be some mistakes with sound lighting ect.

and about kelly being overweight, iam not saying she is. but if you all would have noticed her on staged then looked in the screen on the stage. the image made her look alot smaller then she is. The nutter center also needs some work with the parking, but if everyone would chill out, it would work. Iam betting you all got home.

I have been to many, many Reba concerts and I have to say that I feel this one one of the best, if not THE best! Two fantastic vocal talents, two beautiful women - you can’t go wrong with that. Reba has always been a classy lady - and it reflects in everything she does. It was refreshing to see her return to her “roots” a little and throw out all the pyrotechniques, the costume changes, and the dancers and just get up on the stage, talk to her fans, and SING. Reba is the BEST. We loved it!

Ok, people listen up. The nutter center sucks for a venue, but the show was GREAT! I have been to better Reba concerts. we missed BJ’a act before Reba and Kelly came out, but she is FUNNY as well. Sweet Dreams is a Pasty Cline song. Finally someone know the deal with the sound system, that is not Centers fault, the act brings their own equipment. I do agree the sound was bad, this is the 1st show out of the gate, just needs some work.

I went to the concert last night and really enjoyed Reba’s singing. I was not impressed with Kelly when she sang by herself but as a back up for Reba she was okay. Reba was teriffic she is a beautiful and talented person, she is a true professional. I would go to see her anytime that I could. Kelly reminded me of a young teenager with the floppy legged pants and the constant bouncing she did while Reba just danced to the songs. Kelly had to try to hard to get some of the notes out.

To Amber -
I can’t remember a set list, there were too many songs honestly. They sang most of the songs true duet style, where one woman sang one verse, and one woman sang the other. There were a couple of songs that one would take the true lead in, and the other woman really sang mostly background vocal. It was a great mix - for the most part they sang a Reba song, then a Kelly song, then a Reba song, then a Kelly song. They make you work for the encore!

I was at the concert last night with my brother. I bought the tickets early and we had great seats. The concert was FANTASTIC. I loved every minute of it.The chance to see two great artists together was amazing.Kelly and Reba sang and entertained their hearts out. The band was too loud and at times we couldn’t hear their wonderful voices. Yes it was hard getting out of the place. We finally walked to our car in lot 8. We hung around long enough for traffic to thin out and had no leaving.

First off, the concert was awesome, I had never seen either of them live and it was flawless, anyone who can sing that great live is a true talent!! As for all the complaining that I heard from some of the people there… from the time my friends and I got into the nutter to the time we got off the bus to our car… rediculous!! All I have to say is people need to grow up, lightin’ up and it wasnt that cold last night!! Go Reba and Kelly!! And Boxter, you should lose weight, Kelly looks great!!

As I said below, this was a great concert — reading the other posts about the parking situation, however — not sure if we did anything “special,” but, per the Nutter Center’s advice, we arrived early, had no issues with parking, and got to our seats at 7:05 p.m. — when leaving, rather than wait on a bus to take us to the parking lot, we walked the short distance and got out relatively quickly. We were in lot 7 so perhaps other parking lots had issues, but we were fine with entering/leaving.

What a great show!! We also found out that there are some really wonderful ushers working at the EJNC. My wife recently had knee surgery and had problems getting comfortable in her seat, so they moved us to the floor so she could sit with her leg straightened out. So many people talk about the Nutter’s “bad” sound system but in fact every show brings or rents their own sound equipment and their own “sound people”. If the sound is bad it’s their own fault not the EJNC.

Every time I go to the Nutter Center (or don’t which is the case from the Reba and Kelly concert, what I experience and/or what I hear is that WSU bombed again on the management of the venue and the process. Apparently last night is no exception. Peolpe were once again mistreated and moved around in a way that PETA wouldn’t approve of for cattle. Nutter has been there a long time. The visitors pay the bills. Why not figure out a way to facilitate making them want to come back again?

I have seen MANY concerts. Elvis, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney, Barry Manilow, Faith Hill, Michael Jackson, Barbara Streisand, the Eagles, on and on. 2 things come to mind. FIRST - REBA/KELLY - great combination, strong clear voices with unbelieveable range, stage presence plus, crowd pleasing songs, left us wanting more. Ranking in top 5 I have been to. SECOND - I have NEVER, EVER, experienced a more frustrating/ridiculous traffic situation. These ladies deserved a better venue than Nutter!!

Thank goodness for REBA and Kelly!! REBA and Kelly were “Wright” on as they put on one heck of a show. As for the parking, it was horrible. I have been to around 100 REBA shows all across the US and Canada and I have never had such a bad experience as I did last night with parking. I drove over 2 1/2 hours to see the show and spent more time than that in the parking lot waiting to get in and waiting for a bus to get me to and from the the venue LATE!!
GO REBA!!!!!!

I was in town on business, and got lucky enough to receive some free tickets to the show. While that was appreciative, and the show itself was wonderful (2 amazing voices in the music biz), I will never attend a another show at this venue even if my tickets are free. Logistically, what a mess. This place has serious issues that it better take a serious look at.

I went to the concert also. The concert was AWESOME! I am a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson. She is the world’s best singer. Kelly is the most wonderful and beautiful singer. I never had so much before in my life. I loved every song well especially Kelly’s songs. The crowd went nuts when the show started and ended the first time. When Reba & Kelly came back on stage through an elevator; the crowd went crazy again. If Kelly does another local concert. I will definitely attend.

I agree with everyone that the concert was wonderful. Going into the show, I was more of a Kelly fan, but also liked a few of Reba’s songs. At the end, I was also a Reba fan — their voices matched perfectly and I liked how they went back and forth between their respective songs. I was a bit wierd to see the two singing back-up for one another. My least favorite part of the show was the “comedian” — I did not find her funny and she was a bit annoying.

The concert was absolutely FABULOUS. Too bad it wasn’t held at a different venue. The sound system is horrible at the Nutter. It is geared strictly for sports events. Trying to get out afterwards was next to impossible. Two exits were blocked by police that said we had to go down the hall to the next exit. I thought it was a fire hazard to block exits with people trying to get out. The police are far from helpful or friendly. Get it together Wright State!!!!!

The show was FANTASTIC!It was a real treat! Nutter Center stated to arrive early, we did. ALL entrances were open to accomodate those arriving. We CLIMBED UP 73 hallway stairs to enter. At the end of the show very FEW exits were permitted to be used.We were NOT permitted to exit the way we entered, DOWN THE STAIRS! Parking was horrible. We were parked in lot 8, who would have ever figured there are 2 lot #8. The bottleneck to leave was too much, and in an emergency could have been catastrophic!

The concert was fantastic and we enjoyed every minute of it. That was the extent of our enjoyment. We will NEVER attend another event at the Nutter Center. It took us 2 hours to get from 675 to a parking lot we didn’t even know existed. On the way out my husband was harrassed by one of the rent-a-cops for a comment that he made about the buses. He actually grabbed my husbands arm, put a flashlight in his face, told him to keep his mouth shut and keep moving. Never again!

What I think is funny about all the comments that Kelly gets about her weight - if you take a look at the guys who are talking smack about her weight or look at their girlfriends or wives, you’ll find yourself saying “Like you have room to talk!” It’s easy to sit there on your fat american butt and call other people fat - I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

WOWWOWOWOWOWOW. I’d go back and do that a million times…the show WAS truly out of this world. I could not stop smiling. All I can say about the sound problems is that it absolutely proves those girls sing live (as opposed to so many artists these days). To tell you the truth, I think working with Reba has ALREADY rubbed off on Kelly. I’ve never seen Kelly in concert, but I recall seeing footage of some concerts, and there were times you could tell her voice was wearing thin..not last NIGHT!

What a combination! Reba is a master. I have been a Reba fan from the very beginning. I have missed seeing her in concert. Welcome back to Dayton Reba…….Welcome Kelly! Cindi, Brookville Ohio

The concert was amazing!!! Two beautiful and talented women rocked the stage with amazing voices. My sister and I sang and danced our hearts out. We had floor seats for the very first time and it was great seeing my two favorite singers right up close. Thanks Kelly and Reba for an awesome show. It was also neat to meet Melissa Petterman.

The concert was amazing!!! Melissa Peterman is hilarious. The two together were incredible and I could not imagine a better show! It was so great to see the pure joy on their faces (both of them) to be performing together. And I met Kelly before the show. Not only is she genuine and sweet as can be, she is really beautiful, healthy, and in really good shape. As a 21 year old woman I would be proud to look like her!

Kelly and Reba were outstanding, but the Nutter Center is a horrible venue for these kind of concerts. Parking is a mess, getting in and out of the arean is a mess, Nutter Center sound system stinks. But it was all well work getting to see two professionals in action.
Come on Nutter Center. Clean up your act and make some improvements for those of us who don’t like hockey or basketball.

I was not at the concert. I’m not a HUGE fan of either of those ladies, but I want to say something. BOXTER STINKS. Looking at those pictures of Kelly…she is NOT OVERWEIGHT. It’s people like you that make this world impossible to live in. Go eat some twinkies.

The show was fabulous. It was great seeing the American Idol I had voted for rising to the heights of a Tour with her Idol. The music was a little loud at times but it was just thrilling to be at the show and seeing Reba and Kelly(who is not overweight!)

Can anyone put the set list up? I am going tonight in Louisville! Thanks! Someone mentioned Sweet Dreams, is this the Patsy Cline song?

I agree about the sound system. I would rather have heard the great voices than the band overshadowing. But other than that the concert was amazing. I would go again. Reba & Kelly were great. I enjoyed “BJ” also.

I thought Kelly looked good. She has some curves, but she’s not fat. Why do so many people think that all entertainers need to be bone skinny? I agree that there were sound problems. I would have liked to hear their individual voices a bit more. Overall, the concert was great!

This concert was one of the best concerts that I have ever been to. Reba was exceptional and Kelly showed her stuff. The sound system needs some tweeking but the show was awesome. Having Melissa Peterson (Barbara Jean) just put the icing on the cake. I could go back and watch the show again tomorrow.

Concert was wonderful. Reba is in a class all her own, but Kelly held her own. Is it my imagination, but does the Nutter Center need a new sound system? The feedback was awful and sometimes it was so loud you could not hear the singing. I can’t imagine it was the fault or Reba or Kelly sound team. Did anyone else notice that?

This was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Both Reba and Kelly were fantastic! They took command of the stage the moment they started with “Sweet Dreams” and never let go til the end with “Fancy” Everone at the Nutter Center saw some music history last night with that show!

Kelly needs to lose weight. She did not look good.

As Reba’s shirt said “The Legend” was in the house! The concert was fantastic full of energy and Reba proved once again she is the quintessential entertainer! Too bad for all of you that missed this one! Kelly indeed will be learning from Reba!
