Painful love lesson: Once a 'Mutt,' always a dog

By Nancy Wilson

Here's another thing to add to your "things that make you go "hmmm" file.

Shania Twain and her husband, uber-producer Robert "Mutt" Lange are splitting after 14 years of marriage. You may be thinking, "where's the 'hmm' in that? It happens all the time."

Heck, that's what I thought! I just figured Shania may have grown bored with living in a chateau in Switzerland. Or maybe working with Mutt to come up with a new album after selling 47 million was too much pressure? Or perhaps their 6-year-old son Eja was sick of being called "Pup?"

Who knows with celebrities? Lang issued a statement shortly after the separation, telling People Magazine, the split was "an unfortunate thing. It's literally just a growing apart, that's all."

Here was me, being all "aw, poor Mutt." Then, the real dirt was dug! Ready? People Magazine says there was "another woman."

Wait, what? A dude nicknamed "Mutt," 17 years her senior, steps out on one of the most beautiful women, not just in country music, but in the entertainment industry?

Apparently, the always-heard-but-never-seen "sources close to the situation" say a "third party" was involved. The third party is one Marie-Anne Thiebaud, a longtime Twain/Lange secretary and manager of their Switzerland chateau.

Of course, Dog, I mean, Mutt, denies the allegations saying, "it's absolutely not the reason (for the separation." He also pooh-poohed a romantic relationship with Thiebaud.)

The "other woman" could not be reached for comment, or perhaps is terrified of a honked off Twain. How is Shania handling all of this drama?

Another People magazine "source" (don't you love all the secrecy?) says the 42-year-old is utilizing her "close knit group of family and friends."

Not too long ago, the country Queen told the Mirror, "we both knew it was a forever thing" about their 1993 marriage. She said that day was her happiest memory, "we had all the people who mean something to us there. My parents died in a car crash when I was 22, so it was poignant and special for me to have someone who is going to be with me the rest of my life."

How was Shania to know when she recorded her hit, "Don't be Stupid" she'd end up being married to the king of them?
