National radio personality Russ Parr rolls into the city this morning to transform the Dayton RTA hub at Third and Main streets downtown into a four-hour hip-hop summit for peace.

But while "The Russ Parr Morning Show" is bringing national hip-hop artists with it when it broadcasts live from the hub for its Peace and Love tour, Dayton's peace campaign has been slow to get off the ground.

This year's Russ Parr Bus Tour centers on peacefully resolving usually violent conflicts through mediation. Artists slated to appear include Chris Brown, Lil Mama and B5.

The show airs from 6 to 10 a.m.

Executives from Radio One, which owns local urban-formatted stations WDHT-FM and WROU-FM and syndicates Parr's show, and other city leaders have been brainstorming for close to a year on a campaign to decrease violence.

The campaign was nearly derailed when several teens who had been asked to contribute by speaking out against violence backed out of commitments.

But high-profile victims of violence stepped up to keep the message on track. Former Dunbar High School basketball standout Aaron Pogue, hit by a bullet in May as he sat in a car, agreed to take part in the campaign, which rolls out this week.

Normally, students would not be excused from classes to attend today's broadcast, Dayton Public Schools spokeswoman Jill Moberley said, but schools were closed today because of an excessive heat warning the National Weather Service issued Monday.

"That's not to say we don't recognize the value or purpose of a program like this," Moberley said.
