Miami freshmen feeling anxious, excited

Staff Writer

Friday, August 17, 2007

The temperature rose into the 90s Thursday as students moved into the dorms at Miami University.

"Fathers who are moving sons in aren't sweating. Fathers moving daughters in are," quipped Findlay resident Tom Lause, who was sweating.

However, he said Thursday's heat was better than the rain that accompanied his other daughter's Miami move-in day last year. Lause said he had more of a sense of ease knowing both daughters were away at school together.

That was a sense of ease that Linda Mann, of Newark, Ohio, didn't have. Though she's sent three kids to college previously, Alexis is her first daughter to go. Alexis said she wasn't nervous, but her mom said she was nervous for her.

"I just tell her to be careful — don't walk by yourself," Linda Mann said.

Parents weren't the only ones feeling jittery. First-year student Ashley Wilson, from Columbus, said Miami's size intimidated her, and she felt anxious about finding her way around.

"I'm just going to get with people who want to get to know the campus and walk around," she said.

However, she was excited to meet other students in her major — French education.

First-year student Matt Sullivan, who came to Oxford all the way from New Hampshire, said two

college visits have given him a good handle on the campus — despite being so far from home.

"I feel like I know it pretty well. It's pretty easy to get around, actually," the political-science student said.

Neither was worried about their roommates. While they hadn't yet met, they had conversed through the social-networking Web site Facebook.

"It's a nice tool to have to be able to talk to everybody," Wilson said.

Sullivan speculated that he thought "everybody" probably searched the site for their roommates.

Miami students begin classes Monday.
