Bad kitty.

Scantily clad performers modeled outlandish hair styles and made brash entrances on the catwalk Sunday during the Humane Society of Greater Dayton's annual fundraiser for felines, better known as the "Hair Ball."

Extras

Amid a hooting crowd of 700 that crammed the ballroom at the Dayton Masonic Center on Riverview Avenue, 24 teams representing a dozen Dayton-area salons slinked and swayed to rowdy tunes such as the country hit "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)." Some female participants sported Daisy Dukes in keeping with the fundraiser's Western theme: "Cat Fight at the OK Corral."

Onlooker Kathleen Koehl of Beavercreek, a self-described "military wife," showed up to support her hair stylist, Stevie Keith. She said she's been to hair shows before, but none like Sunday's, which she said brought out a new dimension of Dayton night life.

"I really love the theatrical nature of this," said Koehl, joined by friend Angela Sakryd of Beavercreek. "It's more theatrical, and the hair's a bonus." Besides, she said, referring to her bedazzled blouse with a plunging neckline, "Where else am I going to wear this top in Dayton?"

Kelly Weiler of the Humane Society predicted sponsors and ballgoers would cough up $30,000 for the second-annual event. The money will go toward spaying and neutering programs, a portable cat play area for off-site events so cats don't have to be kept in cages, and for food and supplies for those who provide foster care for felines.

Affinity Salon & Day Spa in Washington Township and the Wavelength Beauty Wellness Center of Yellow Springs tied for the catwalk competition's "Top Cat" award.
