Springfield's Unsolved Mysteries
Comment: What do you know about the unsolved murders?
Related article: Four murders, no arrest

Springfield, Ohio — The discovery of Angela Hanaway's body in the Mad River on June 10 brought the count to four — the number of women killed since 2006 in what are being treated as unsolved homicides.
All four bodies were discovered in or near Springfield's west side and all had histories of drug and/or prostitution arrests, according to court records.
Investigators aren't prepared to draw a link among the four cases.
"At this time, there is no evidence that they are connected," said Clark County Prosecutor Stephen Schumaker.
No arrests have been made in connection to any of the deaths, but police say the investigation is far from over.
"By no means are these cold cases," said Captain Mike Hill, Springfield Police Division. "We'll never give up."
Investigators are asking for help from the public to solve the slayings.
"Any information, no matter how small they think it is," said Hill.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Springfield Police Division at (937) 324-7716, 24 hours a day. Callers may remain anonymous, said Hill.

The cold case site doesn’t list all of the murders in springfield that have’nt been solved. do they not update it? I don’t recall ever hearing of Mary Vanculin or Julie Freeman’s murders being solved.

PLEASE I know theres someone out there that knows who did this! You need to come forward. This person deserves to pay for what he’s done!Angie tryed to get clean but the same jerk kept pushing the drugs on her.He kept pulling her right back into it. If she didnt do as he said he beat her almost to death! I remember the nights she would call after he beat her.Begging me to help. She was so afraid of him.God rest her soul.Atleast she is safe now away from men like him. They can’t hurt anymore.

One of the biggest problems with this country is the n****r! Granted there are some whte trash citizens out there but the crimes committed by niggers dworf those of whites. We have a minority of the population responsible for a majority of the crime. For some reason people in this country refuse to see this as a truth. People ignore it in favor of political correctness or a fear of being labled ignorant. Get rid of niggers in this country, reduce crime by 70%, minimum.

What society? The white trash elected officials who PRETEND they can’t do nothing about this s**t? The do nothing badges who tell you it ain’t their problem?
They NEED their relatives to be found dead. See if they know nothing and do nothing then.

Justin, it’s not just the N’s and crack. It is our society as a whole. The mexicans, the white trash, you, me, the cops, business professionals. We all live in this mess together. If we pay hookers, then we’re a part of it. If we buy drugs, we’re part of it. If we walk the streets, we’re part of it.

a mothers love said it best.
The cops WON’T (not don’t) do anything about anything here. Why? It’s not their problem?
NIGGERS are a problem here. You got African Americans and you got NIGGERS. The NIGGERs have been allowed to take over the place…not the African Americans. Who runs the crack trade in this town?
How did it happen?

I live in a “SMALL” community in springfield and there are drughouses and users everywhere in this small area. the managers of this area have watched and even made an EXTENSIVE list of names, houses and even vehicles driven. when they tried to turn this list into the sheriffs department the managers were told that clark county sheriffs cant do anything about it, the managers would have to go through a drug control agency in columbus. I DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO HELP CLOSE TO HOME!

Ok Justin. So in your sick and twisted way of saying it, you do have a point that Spfld has problems. I know you have the right to free speech, but have a little respect. The N-word is totally inappropriate and really isn’t the problem. The point is Spfld has a drug and prostitute problem. Your trash talk isn’t going to solve that, it only makes you sound like an idiot. And if you’re paying them for services, you’re no better than they are. You are supporting what you are criticizing.

You know Justin, had these girls not been addicted to drugs, they proubly wouldn’t have given you the time or day, so to brag about what you paid them to do, says what about you? and as for calling people niggers… i consider you one, maybe you need to take a long look at yourself before you judge other people, you don’t sound like much of a person to me, congradulations! Bonnie for changing your life around. stay stronge!

I really don’t understand the debate here. It is not up to us to judge their lifestyles. Whether they were prostitutes or not their lives had value. I also believe that we all have the right to say what we think and cherish our freedom of speech. However, sometimes you need to watch how you present yourself because while you may have a valid point no one will listen if you come off being ignorant.

I to had fallen victim of this lifestyle and yes I emerged from it. Springfield as well as many places do not want to give people a chance that have turned themselves around. When most get out they end up going back do to the fact they are given no chance to be something more than a minimum wage slave. I was a highschool dropout that was hooked on crack for 5-6 years, now I am on my third year in college and still unemployed. Someone needs to help!!!

Thank you willey. I’ll keep saying how I see it. I’m not alone by a long shot. The people who run this place, the courts, the cops, etc LET this town get this way. I can’t wait until their women folk are found dead like the murdered prostitutes. It will be a fine day in Springfield when that happens!

I have lived in Springfield since the 1990’s and murders of ladys of the night have been going on since then. But the one that I remember most is the one of Thelma Gebert she was my neighbor and I miss her terribly. I wish someone would solve her murder she was a very nice lady.

I think that springfield needs Better jops so people dont fall into this lifestyle. Also, it breaks my heart that the drug addition is so terrible that there are not enough rehab programs available to help these women. Does anyone think that in a milliom years that these women or their familys ever dreamed this would be their fate. The drug force has to get tougher and therer has to be help, with no waiting lists. My heart goes out to their familys, and I hope and pray that Springfield steps in

Yes thanks alot Springfield News and Sun for trampling the rights of a US citizen. Everyone has the right to voice his or her opinion whether it be popular or not. You have sided with the masses despite the fact that this person you have sensored is protected under the first amendment. Just like hip hop and rap lyrics are protected.I thought the news paper of all institutions would observe the right to free speach. I guess these murders are not the only coverup in Springfield.

It is ALL niggers & crack. Nobody cares. The cops don’t care & the courts don’t care. Hooker murder isn’t a big deal to them. There will be more because they don’t care. That’s how this town went to hell in the first place.

Thank you News Sun for removing Justin’s comments. While I do not condone the lifestyle, I believe that these families have lost as much as any one of us have when a loved one passes away, no matter who they are or what they have done. It is a sad, sad ending for a Mother, a Daughter, a Sister and so on. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to their families.

Once again, we have a story which should concern every living being in Springfield, only to have it reduced to total smut by one single individual who not only allowed to spread this infectious hatred for human life-but have it remain to on this forum for quite some time. Obviously he has a problem with black people, and personally I don’t care because I see him as being a weak pathetic person who has nothing to offer to society. I just wish that Springfield News Sun took a stance and filter him

My children lost an aunt when Buffy was killed. These women were loved by many, they had families. We will never get over how they were taken from us. Someone knows something and hopefully they will speak up and do the right thing. Buffy was a wonderful person who loved her family and loved country music. Like two sparrows in a hurricane…

i just don’t understand why when familys are mourning the deaths of these four women you can be so little as to write about what they did for you. Justin i really think you need some counsiling or something. That is just sick. Some people chose the wrong road in life. Some people get sucked into that life. If you have never actaully smoked crack or seen what it does to good people i think you have no room to talk.I have a good friend whose life is ruined because of this powerful drug. GROW UP!!!!

Justin, you are a SICK, SELFISH, INCONSIDERATE IDIOT!! I know you have to have a mother, maybe a aunt, sister,or DAUGHTER!! Drug abuse and prostitution are diseases. People like you feed off of other’s misfortunes, and people like you, have no value. Unfortunately, you are allowed to live another day. Must be a sad life to have to indulge in prostitution and then criticize it on an internet post. You seem to be an angry person. Could it be guilt??

I believe that every life has value. And I also believe that someone has been killing prostitutes since the 1980’s. And nothing has been done. Prostitution is at it’s worse in Spfld. The route I have to take to and from work everyday gives me a scenic view of these lost souls and the sick men who prey on their weakness. Where are the police? Why aren’t they targeting these areas?? Why isn’t someone in this community doing something for these women before their bodies are found??

Crimes go unsolved because people don’t help the police, not because the police don’t care. The police treat every homicide the same regardless of who the victim was and how they lived their life.
There are people out there who have information on many unsolved crimes, but refuse to come forward for whatever reason. It is a shame that murderers will go free because of it.

How many major drug busts are there in Springfield? Not many, and it’s not because there are no local players. There are little busts here and there, but the major drug dealers are safe in Springfield.
Springfield black market drug enterprises are growing by leaps and bounds because the major players aren’t being arrested & prosecuted. Illegal aliens are partnering with local drug distribution networks and Clark County officials simply ignore it.
That’s the reason this town is full of drugs

It is heart breaking, no matter what life style one takes that someone would end another’s life!Murder happens, and Springfield is no different. If you want to say someone isn’t doing their job to investigate homicides, please call your local polices stations and the prosecutor’s office and ask for the stats on how many cases are prosecuted. It bothers me to read what has been posted today!Four women are dead, four families are without them, and a murderer is still out there.

What’s real sad is that this has been going on since the 80’s in Springfield. There are many murders unsolved, most of them were prostitutes. They seem to go on for a few years and then stop for a decade or so then start again…They could all be connected. Everyone needs to be aware of this! Look at these websites from Springfield and Clark County:
