Miami equestrians hosting show this weekend

Staff Report

Tuesday, October 07, 2008

The Miami University Equestrian Team will host their annual home hunt seat team show Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12, at the John W. Brown Equestrian Center. The show will start at 10 a.m. each day and admission is free.

Miami will compete against nationally ranked teams from all over Ohio including Findlay University, Otterbein College, Bowling Green State University, Ohio Wesleyan University and Wilmington College.

"This season looks very promising, our roster is strong with returning members and many new talented riders. I look forward to a competitive season and believe we are at the top of our game," said Lori Cramer, director of riding at Miami University.

Miami's equestrian team is made up of 70 students who compete in their preferred discipline. There are three disciplines offered.

The hunt seat is judged on the rider's ability to ride the horse properly with the correct position in a flat saddle. Hunt seat can be performed with or without jumping. When jumping, The rider is judged on his or her position and their fluidity over the fences.

Western riding is judged on the rider's ability to effectively guide the horse while maintaining a position reflecting minimal effort and poise. Some riders also compete in reining, a quick-paced event that is judged on he rider's ability to correctly and gracefully demonstrate a pattern.

This year will be the first year Miami will compete in the discipline of dressage. Dressage is often called "horse ballet" because the goal of the rider is to be as graceful as possible. A dressage test is a set of movements performed at a certain point in a small arena. Dressage is judged on precision and grace.

"MUET is an amazing opportunity to find a true family on campus that are just as horse crazed as you are. We build our relationships through volunteering, team building and competing together throughout our amazing season," said Leslie Coen, president of the Miami Equestrian Team.

Miami's Equestrian Team is a nationally ranked team that competes within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Last year, two Miami riders qualified to compete at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals and they took home a national championship and a fifth place finish.
