Hearing set on China Arnold's bid for new trial

DAYTON — A judge will hold a hearing Oct. 20 on whether to grant China Arnold, convicted of killing her month-old daughter by burning her in a microwave oven, a new trial.
Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Mary Wiseman granted the request Wednesday, Oct. 8.
Arnold, 28, was sentenced in September to life in prison without parole following her second trial. Her first one ended in a mistrial.
Defense attorneys said a former cellmate who testified that Arnold confessed to the killing has changed her story. They also said they have evidence that points to another person as being responsible.
Prosecutors oppose a new trial, arguing that the cellmate's trial testimony is credible and her recantation is not. And they have argued in court filings that there is no evidence anyone other than Arnold committed the crime.
