The title of the exhibit is "Standing in Awe," and that's exactly what you're likely to do when visiting the exhibit at Gallery Saint John.

The free exhibit, open to the public through March 23, features 60 photographs from a variety of locales across the United States, taken by Brother John Lemker, who has lived at the Marianist Novitiate since 1999 and is one of the gallery's resident artists.

"My pursuit of inspiring images has been ongoing since 1975," said Lemker, whose photographs appear in Sierra Club, Time-Life Books and National Geographic publications, as well as numerous calendars, magazines, textbooks and private collections.

"As a native Kentuckian, I attended a Marianist high school in Covington, where I found my inspiration for joining the Marianists."

With a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Dayton, a master's degree in physics from Ohio State University and a master's degree in Scripture from Boston College, he taught physics and math in three Marianist high schools in the course of 27 years.

"In 1970, I had an opportunity, through a National Science Foundation grant, to begin a study of geology. For three summers, I studied in Arizona, Colorado and Utah, and was awed by not only the wonderful geology but the spectacular color, rock formations and desert beauty.

"This began my serious quest to capture the beauty on film, which I have expanded to many other subjects over the years," he said.

Since 1984, Lemker has been a photographer for a stock picture agency based in New York, resulting in his work being published throughout the United States and abroad.

"I've conducted several photography workshops at Bergamo Center and will be teaching nature photography at the University of Dayton Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in April," he said.

Lemker said that his own learning in the area of photography, has been enriched through workshops with professional nature photographers such as John Shaw.

"(Shaw) has produced some of the most extraordinary images of wildlife and landscapes of the United States."

The public is invited to an artist reception from 1:30 to

3:30 p.m. March 2.

Those attending the free reception will be treated to the music of Bob Behringer on the American Indian flute.

Gallery Saint John is located at Mount Saint John, 4400 Shakertown Road, in Beavercreek. Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday or by appointment.
