1979 Bird vs. Magic a can't miss replay
Friday, March 27, 2009
If you missed the original on March 26, 1979, or the replay on ESPN Classic on Thursday night, don't despair. The Indiana State-Michigan State NCAA basketball title game will be replayed on ESPN2 on April 3 (7 p.m.) and 5 (2 p.m.), commemorating 30 years.
The replay also includes interviews with Indiana State's Larry Bird and MSU's Magic Johnson as well as ISU's Bob Heaton and MSU's Greg Kelser.
Don't want to spoil it for you, but MSU won 75-64.
It remains college basketball's highest-rated game at 24.1.
In addition, a one-on-one conversation between Magic and Bird will debut on the 11 p.m. "SportsCenter" on April 6.
Pick 'em and hope
You think it's easy picking winners in this tournament? Five million have submitted brackets to ESPN's tournament game (a chance to win $10,000), but nobody has been perfect so far. Two entries have two losses.
President Barack Obama made out a bracket, and has missed only on Arizona and Xavier into the Sweet 16.
Even though there was no entry fee, NCAA athletes were barred from entering. (Make your own comment here.)
Costas returns
Bob Costas returns to Yankee Stadium, the newer version, to broadcast New York's home opener vs. the Cleveland Indians on April 16 on the MLB Network. Costas last announced a MLB game when he did the sixth and final game of the American League Championship Series, Yanks vs. Mariners, at the old Stadium in 2000.
The MLB Network announced its first eight Thursday Night games with 16 different teams, none of them the Cincinnati Reds.
What else to watch
Speaking of the Reds, when is baseball going to get with it and allow them to open the season, the way it used to be? Sunday night, April 5, ESPN2 will broadcast the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, with Steve Phillips added to the booth of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan, beginning at 8 p.m.
NCAA women's basketball regionals begin this weekend on ESPN and ESPN2, although one of Saturday's games begins at 11:30 p.m. in our time zone, which isn't going to grab a lot of viewers.
