Miami women win MAC opener
AKRON — Courtney Reed tied her career high with 19 points Wednesday, Jan. 7, as the Miami University women's basketball team beat Akron 83-63 in its Mid-American Conference opener.
Reed was one of five RedHawks to score in double figures. The others were Jenna Schone (14), Erin Wisner (13, a career-high) and Jaclyn Leininger and Maggie Boyer (both with 11).
The RedHawks (9-5) return to action 2 p.m. Saturday at home against Kent State as the first half of a doubleheader. The Miami men's team will face Akron in the second game.
The Akron women slipped to 5-9.
Miami Hamilton men win by 20
HAMILTON — The Miami University Hamilton men's basketball team defeated Ohio State University-Lima 77-57 Wednesday, Jan. 7.
The Harriers were led by sophomore Vincent Cook with 25 points. Freshman Marcus Calhoun added 20 points.
MUH (3-13, 2-9 Ohio Regional Campus Conference) will play Friday at home against Ohio State-Newark.
Boston College fires Jagodzinski
BOSTON — Boston College fired Jeff Jagodzinski on Wednesday, Jan. 7, days after he was warned of dismissal if he interviewed for the coaching job with the New York Jets.
BC Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo told Jagodzinski on Saturday that his job would be in jeopardy if he went through with the Jets interview. Jagodzinski met with the Jets on Tuesday night.
Georgia stars declare for NFL draft
ATHENS, Ga. — Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are leaving the University of Georgia for the NFL draft.
Stafford, a junior, and Moreno, a third-year sophomore, made the joint statement Wednesday.
Stafford could be among the top picks in the draft.
Moreno had 1,400 yards rushing with 16 touchdowns this season.
Cavaliers cruise past Bobcats
CLEVELAND — LeBron James scored 21 points before grabbing an early seat on the bench, Mo Williams added 15 points and Cleveland warmed up for its highly anticipated matchup with Boston by blowing out the Charlotte Bobcats 111-81 on Wednesday, Jan. 7, raising the Cavaliers' record at home to 18-0.
But 19-0 isn't a given.
On Friday, the defending NBA champions will arrive for a game pitting the Eastern Conference's premier powers.
Senators' Ruutu suspended for biting
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ottawa Senators forward Jarkko Ruutu has been suspended by the NHL for two games without pay for biting Buffalo Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters.
The NHL announced Wednesday that Ruutu will lose $37,707 in pay and miss Ottawa's game at Boston on Thursday and a home game against the New York Rangers on Saturday.
The ruling came a day after Ruutu bit down on Peters' glove during an altercation in front of the Senators bench in the first period of Buffalo's 4-2 victory.
