1. Chaminade Julienne will celebrate its 1,000th win — the first Dayton school to get there — and the program's 80th anniversary on Sunday. Coaching legend Don Donoher will help honor the Eagles, who played their first game in 1928. As part of the festivities, CJ goes for another 'W' against Beavercreek at 3 p.m. at the Trent Arena. For those wanting to attend the after-game event at CJ, call (937) 461-3740, ext. 232.
2. The Staley brothers (Jim at Centerville and Joe at CJ) will watch their teams battle Marshall and Jefferson and then exchange foes on Dec. 26-27 at UD Arena. No, the Elks and Eagles won't go at it — not a good idea for family harmony.
3. Centerville's team is so deep that the Elks will bring the GWOC's returning 3-point shooting leader (Mike Griffin) and perhaps its best athlete (Alex Kniceley) off the bench. Elks were reportedly unbeaten in summer leagues and through preseason scrimmages.
4. Alter coach Joe Petrocelli has 757 wins, just a handful behind Kalida's Richard Kortokrax for the all-time Ohio lead. This may be the season that Petro catches Kortokrax, who may be in his final year at Kalida. Petro's average season includes winning more than 17 games. "I've set the bar too high," he said.
5. The Miami Valley steps into the national spotlight when Flyin' to the Hoop takes off at Trent Arena. USA Today tabbed the three-day hoopfest (Jan. 17-19) as one of the country's top 10 tournaments to watch. It's a mix of 11 area teams and a handful of the nation's top teams and players.
