Warren County boys fare well in London
Friday, August 01, 2008
The Northern Warren County Alliance Boys Under-14 Black soccer team had to leave its coach behind on a recent trip to London, England, but found some more than adequate replacements.
Alliance coach Dave Schureck, who is also the coach at Xavier, couldn't travel with the team because his wife was giving birth. No matter, the team had coaches from prestigious academies such as Chelsea Academy, Fulham Academy and David Beckham Academy to train under.
The NWC Alliance was the first American team to be invited to train with these academies.
"It was kind of groundbreaking," said assistant coach Ron Coates of Springboro. "It would be like a club football team training with the Dallas Cowboys coaches."
The team, which has players from the Dayton and Cincinnati areas, was put through the same tests as professional players. Each athlete was able to see how his individual results compared.
After the training, the boys played some of the best English youth academies.
They finished with a 2-2 record, and Coates said they were the most successful U.S. youth club team to compete at the highest Academy level.
Raiders swim to title
The Dayton Raiders Swim Club found themselves a stroke ahead of the competition at the Senior (15 and older) Long Course State Championships, besting 28 other teams from around the state.
They scored 1,243 total team points, 49 ahead of the runners-up. The championships were July 24-27 at Bowling Green State University.
Five Dayton women were among the top 19 in individual scoring: Erin Fawley, Lynsey Farrel, Elizabeth Malone, Makenzie Weldon, and Molly Osterhage.
Matt Brittingham earned 62 points, tied for 22nd among the men.
Alumni championships
A battle of area high schools will take place this weekend. The first Dayton area runners Alumni Championships will be held at Centerville High School on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m.
Anyone with a connection to a Dayton area high school may participate.
