TIME WARNER could be erasing your DVR (or at least resetting your settings)
TIME WARNER DVR maintenance alert! Your settings could be lost
When I saw the mailing from Time Warner, I panicked… Cable Converter Maintenance March 11, 2008 (read on).
The mailing seems to suggest, “You could miss some of your recordings if you don’t check you converter settings.” For those of us who have come to depend on the scheduled recordings - panic sets in when one thinks about missing a show due to a system issue!
Apparently, Time Warner will be doing some maintenance to the cable converters and we will need to “re-establish” some of our settings - including “DVR/VCR recordings.”
What does this “re-establish” mean? - are they saying reprograming? Why don’t they just say reprograming! - the touchy-feely wording of ‘re-establish” doesn’t quite convey the urgency and the time investment that will be required to reprogram the Queue. This is just like the time the day the DVR died. UGH!
That’s not all - a visit to the TW’s Web site provided more confusion.
When I visited the URL printed on the mailing - www.twdayton.com/settings I found conflicting information. The Web site says the maintenance day is March 18, 2008. A phone call to the company left me on hold for more than 45 minutes… (granted it was snowing).
So, If Time Warner is your cable company - be on the lookout for some maintenance issues that could cause channel outages, the need to update your settings as well as the to need re-establish DVR/VCR settings.
The good news for everyone forking over thousands of dollars a year for services - “Once complete (the maintenance), we will be able to continue to provide quality cable service”… isn’t that what we’re paying for?
If anyone has any information on the Cable Converter Maintenance” or more concrete info - please share - the DVR community thanks you!
UPDATE: 3-9-08 a.m. The phone just rang with an automated message indicating the date will be the 18th (Perhaps they are staging this “refreshing” at different times throughout the service area).

Okay, TW blows and so does their service (or rather lack of competence). The time it occurred is when I’m watching basketball on league pass and then a movie and some news. When I called Time Warner after waiting to see if my MOD would come back on, the TW rep said it would be back on in the morning. In the late morning, not all channels were back. I called for an update and the TW rep told me to unplug to reboot (although I know how to reboot the box and it does it sometimes once to three times a day..pos.) and there was still no change. He said that all channels should be stored by 6 p.m..they of course weren’t. I think he must have been off by 5 p.m. and wouldn’t have to deal with call backs. I called again and got the same schtick as their recording about it would only take 45 minutes, 24 hours later and still waiting. later that night while wet-vac and sump pumping my basement and trying to watch Lakers-Mavs on league pass, with 29 seconds left and Dirk hits a 3 to make it a two point game, the cable box reboots(SOB!)out of the blue. After it comes back on, caught the last 4 seconds and still don’t have all the channels. As of now , yet another 26 1/2 hours later, still don;t have all the channels. The last TW rep I spoke with yesterday after being on hold 25 minutes, which seems to be the average, still could not provide pertinent information(also the norm). I asked when are the on-demand channels we’re paying for will be back and she sniped that they were “free”, which I quipped “Yeah but cable’s not”. I asked if Time Warner was going to give coupons with the bill for the service outage which she didn’t know if they will. Time Warner Cable’s business of providing a service, high priced cable programming, while providing lackluster customer service is a business model becoming all too familiar in America.

With the problems that occured Saturday into Sunday I lost only one program that was on my DVR.It just happened to be The Super Bowl this year. It’s kind of like an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, except I’m not laughing. Have a service call this thursday from Time Warner. Does any one know if it is possible to find programming that has been erased on the 8300 hd box? Thanks

More articles written by someone who probably couldn’t figure out how to set the clock on their VCR. Insults aside, if your self important enough and willing to spend the money, why not learn to use your DVR instead of acting like chicken little. If anything this is a minor inconvenience complicated only by the thought that you may forget what programs you were recording.

I work at TWC, and I have to say, as an employee, but more as a normal citizen, I really don’t think this is worth freaking out about, and certainly far short of worth publishing an article about. It’s really not that confusing, I got the mailer like everyone else, and have not been giving any further inside information, and I really can’t say that I have any questions. Here is the situation as I understand it: On March 11, probably in the middle of the nightm TWC will send a remote signal to all the cable boxes, which will just be a fundemental software upgrade. This upgrade may cause some of the personal settings/preferences within the box to reset. So, right around March 11/12, bring up the DVR list with your remote and check your scheduled recordings and make sure they are still intact. If not, set them back up. Yeah, it sucks, but really, it will take you 5 minutes. If you have little children, check your parental control settings and make sure your filters are still up, again, 5 minute fix, if that. Oh, and the 45 minute wait time can be at least partially contributed to the 15 inches of snow we’re all enjoying right now, so let’s be cool and not be too snappy with your local TW rep, should you need to call in with a questions ;) I think our job is challenging enough without having to answer for local media-incited rioting anwyway. To recap: TIME WARNER CABLE IS NOT NOT NOT NOT ERASING YOUR DVR!!! ALL OF YOUR RECORDINGS ARE SAFE!!! Just keep an eye on your box, as politely advised by our mailer. We only sent it because we love ya. Have a good day everyone!
