Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America

By Barbara Ehrenreich (More book info: Public Library | Amazon.com)

Journalist, essayist and cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich took her car, her laptop and $1,000, then committed herself to a grand personal and cultural experiment: Getting by on about $7 an hour, the salary earned by low-paid and unskilled workers. In 1999 and 2000, Ehrenreich worked as a waitress in Key West, Fla., as a cleaning woman and a nursing home aide in Portland, Maine, and in a Wal-Mart in Minneapolis. She discovered that her pay would barely stretch to cover the the necessities of life (rent, transportation, and food), let alone of health coverage, and only if she worked seven days a week, sometimes at two jobs. Still, it's not all about the money: Ehrenreich found that talking to other workers constituted “time theft” to one employer, and labored alongside full-time workers who slept in their car because they couldn't afford housing. She also writes of random acts of kindness by people struggling in society's lower levels, and the last chapter addresses the issues she encountered: Why wages are so low, why workers don't rebel, Washington's attitude about minimum wage and the refusal to increase it so people can actually live.

“The interview is multiple-choice: Do I have anything, such as child care problems, that might make it hard for me to get to work on time? Do I think safety on the job is the responsibility of management? Then, popping up cunningly out of the blue: How many dollars' worth of stolen goods have I purchased in the last year? Would I turn in a fellow employee if I caught him stealing? Finally, "Are you an honest person?" - from Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich

Barnara Ehrenreich is the author or co-author of twelve books, including Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class, which was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. She has written for dozens of magazines, including Ms., Harper's, The Nation, The Progressive, The New Republic, The Atlantic Monthly and the New York Times Magazine.
