FARMERSVILLE — Second- and third-grade students at Farmersville Elementary School smiled as Rotarians handed them activity books and dictionaries.

The Farmersville Rotary Club's project is part of the international organization's efforts on behalf of literacy. For the past 10 years, third-grade students have been given dictionaries. At the end of their fifth-grade year, they're allowed to take them home and keep them.

Last year, an activity book was added for second-grade students. "Andy & Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure" is a coloring book that presents the Rotary's Four-Way Test — Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

"Andy & Elmer," commissioned by the Fairborn Rotary Club, was written by Kettering author and illustrator Andrew Shoup. More about the book can be found at www.andyandelmer.com.

Last year, dictionaries were presented in memory of Don Holtzmuller, a longtime Farmersville businessman. His wife, Sally, is a retired teacher from Farmersville Elementary. This year the dictionaries were presented in memory of Harrell Masters and Bill Miller.

"This is one of the ways we fulfill our obligation as Rotarians. Community service is one of the four avenues of service in Rotary," said Greg Garner, past president of the Farmersville Rotary.
