Alter’s Bazelak, Miller co-Southwest District players of year

Alter High School senior teammates Libby Bazelak and Braxtin Miller shared the Division II girls player of the year and Versailles swept the player and coach D-III boys top honors for the All-Southwest District girls and boys basketball teams released by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

In all, seven area standouts were named players of the year and five coaches were selected.

GIRLS SCHEDULE: Regional results, pairings

Bazelak (15.5 points) and Miller (16.1) are four-year starters and have led Alter to successive D-II state championships in 2015-16. Both are guards and have signed with NCAA D-I programs, Bazelak with Duquesne University and Miller with Oklahoma State. Alter (25-2) will play Carroll (23-4) in a D-II regional final at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Springfield.

BOYS SCHEDULE: District results, regional pairings

Versailles was the only program to sweep player and coach top honors. Tigers 6-6 junior Justin Ahrens (23.4 points) was the D-III player of the year. He’s verbally committed to Ohio State. Versailles coach Travis Swank was named the D-III coach of the year in his first season as the Tigers’ coach. Versailles (24-1) will play North college Hill in a D-III district final at UD Arena on Thursday.

VERSAILLES GIVES A HOOT: Tigers’ girls and boys moving on

Tri-Village senior Allie Downing (17.3) was named the D-IV girls player of the year. The Patriots (24-1) play Jackson Center in a D-IV regional semifinal at Vandalia-Butler on Thursday.

Area boys swept the player of the year honors, which included Springfield’s Danny Davis (D-I), Torrey Patton of Trotwood-Madison (D-II) and Fairlawn’s Nathan Lessing (D-IV).

ON THE REBOUND: Carroll rallies around coach Grosselin

A 6-3 guard and four-year starter, Davis averaged 18.2 points in leading Springfield to 19-3 regular-season record that included an outright Greater Western Ohio Conference National East Division title (11-1). That was the first divisional crown for the Wildcats since South in 2005. Davis signed last month to play football at the University of Wisconsin.

Patton (20.6) is part of a high-scoring Rams team and, like Davis, is a repeat All-Southwest District first teamer. Lessing (28.1) was among the state’s leading scorers. All are seniors. Like Versailles, Springfield and Trotwood also play in boys district finals this week at UD Arena.

Tippecanoe’s Andy Holderman (D-II), Dennis McIntosh of West Liberty-Salem (D-III) and Franklin Monroe’s Abbey Moore (D-IV) were girls coaches of the year in their respective divisions. Tipp (23-4) lost to Alter in a regional semifinal on Tuesday. West Liberty-Salem was 21-1 in the regular season. Franklin Monroe won just two games last season and went 15-9 with three freshman in its lineup.

Spencer Cordonnier of Russia (D-IV) was boys coach of the year. In his second season, Russia won its fourth consecutive Shelby County League title.

All-Southwest District teams were based on coaches’ nominations and selected by a district media panel. Southwest District players will be nominated for All-Ohio and Ms. and Mr. Basketball. Nominees were based on the regular season only.
