There was plenty of offense at Fifth Third Field on Wednesday, and good pitching — it depended on which game you were watching.

The Dayton Dragons wrapped up a 12th season of showcasing area high school teams at the ballpark downtown. The hitters grabbed the spotlight in the first game as Greenville outscored West Carrollton 16-10. The Green Wave scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed, although the Pirates certainly kept things interesting.

Springfield and Brookville locked up in a pitcher’s duel in the nightcap, with a steady rain falling from the opening pitch.

The Blue Devils scored single runs in the first two innings and the Wildcats answered with one in the fifth, and then with runners at second and third in the sixth inning, Skylar Beegle sliced a single to right to tie the game 2-2, but Nate McGlothlin was thrown out at the plate with the go-ahead run.

This one went to extra innings and both teams scored a pair of runs in the eighth. Then in the ninth inning the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs and Dominic Manier took ball four to force home the winning run, Springfield wins it 5-4.

There was one other high school game scheduled at Fifth Third Field, but Thursday’s game between Milton Union and Lehman Catholic has been postponed due to rain in the forecast. The Dragons are trying to find a make-up date that works for both schools.
