Bengals promote linebacker, waive veteran defensive lineman

The Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday waived veteran defensive tackle Pat Sims and signed linebacker Hardy Nickerson off the practice squad.

Sims suffered a calf injury two weeks ago against Jacksonville that kept him out of last week’s game at Tennessee, and the team had already ruled him out for Sunday’s game at Denver.

A third-round draft pick in 2008, Sims spent eight of his 10 seasons with the Bengals. He spent his first five years in Cincinnati from 2008-12 before signing with Oakland and playing 2013-14 with the Raiders. Sims returned to the Bengals in 2015.

He has played 124 games in his 10-year career with 48 starts, recording 336 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

Nickerson returns to the 53-man roster, which is where he began the year after making the team as an undrafted college free agent out of Illinois.

The Bengals waived him Tuesday to make room for running back Brian Hill but re-signed Nickerson to the practice squad Wednesday. He’s played in seven games this season with two tackles, both on special teams.
