Week 11: Undefeated Flyers look to crash FCS playoff party

The Dayton Flyers play in the only non-scholarship football league in NCAA Division I-AA. Oh, sorry, Football Championship Subdivision. Let’s just call it I-AA, OK? Anyway, the Flyers are 9-0 heading into Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against Marist at Welcome Stadium.

A win in their home finale would put them in the playoffs, where they would take on a team that offers 60-plus football scholarships. That would be interesting. Then again, UD has been very interesting this season. The Flyers have come from behind in six of their nine wins, so don’t expect a blowout today.

There are plenty of ways to see or listen to this game. It will be televised on Time Warner Cable’s sports channel (311/1311). On the radio, it’s on WHIO AM 1290. And if you go to a UD basketball game on Friday, your ticket stub will get you free admission to the football game.

Here’s this week’s college football six-pack, plus other games of interest:

Texas at West Virginia, noon, ESPNU – Mountaineers are 4-4 and the back end of their schedule is favorable. A win here would go a long way in clinching a bowl bid. Texas has talent, so no guarantees.

No. 3 Ohio State at Illinois, noon, ABC – Illinois fired its athletic director this week, but I doubt the Illini will wear "Win One For Mike Thomas" headbands. Thomas left UC in 2011 for the Illinois post.

No. 21 Memphis at No. 24 Houston, 7 p.m., ESPN2 – The winner could have the inside track to the Group of Five's automatic big-boy bowl berth. Count on plenty of chatter about UH coach (and former Ohio State offensive coordinator) Tom Herman taking a new job.

Arkansas at No. 9 LSU, 7:15 p.m., ESPN – Arkansas' leaky defense is just what LSU's Leonard Fournette wants to see after getting shut down last week by Alabama. Loved Bret Bielema's decision to go for two in the Hogs' overtime win over Ole Miss.

BYU at Missouri (in Kansas City), 7:30 p.m., SEC Network – Missouri's players have decided to honor their athletic scholarships and play after weighing in on racial troubles on their campus. They sacked the president, now can they take care of the Cougars?

No. 12 Oklahoma at No. 6 Baylor, 8 p.m., ABC – The scoreboard might blow up. The key to this playoff elimination game is Baylor's defense. Can the Bears make some tackles and slow down Samaje Perine? The Sooners' bruising back will be fresh, having carried just 24 times the past two weeks, both blowouts.
