Sunday, January 07, 2007
DAYTON — The Barbara Cox Anthony Scholarships will be awarded this spring to outstanding male and female graduating seniors from Miami Valley high schools.
The four-year scholarships will provide up to $15,000 per year, per student toward tuition, room and board, books and registration fees at any accredited U.S. college or university to which the winners are admitted.
Extras
The Barbara Cox Anthony Scholarships are designed to encourage highly motivated students who, because of limited family finances, cannot afford to attend a college. All candidates should have proven academic achievement, involvement in community, leadership skills and perseverance.
Students living in the primary market circulation area of the Dayton Daily News and attending state-certified public or private high schools are eligible to apply. The newspaper's primary circulation area includes Montgomery, Greene, Warren, Preble, Clark, Miami, Darke and Shelby counties. Family members of employees of Cox Ohio Publishing and other Cox-owned properties in the Dayton area are ineligible to compete for the scholarships.
Packets describing the scholarship requirements have been mailed to guidance counselors at public and private high schools in the eight-county area.
Applications are due Feb. 2. The awards will be announced in April.
A seven-member selection committee has been formed to review applications and recommend three finalists for each of the two scholarship awards. Mrs. Anthony will make the final selection.
The selection committee includes: Mary Boosalis, president, Miami Valley Hospital; Steve Brown, owner, Irongate Realtors; Doug Franklin, publisher, Dayton Daily News and president and CEO, Cox Ohio Publishing; Michael Greitzer, partner/president, Miller Valentine Group; Helen Jones-Kelley, director, Montgomery County Department of Jobs and Family Services; Deborah Lieberman, commissioner, Montgomery County; and Brad Tidwell, regional president, JP Morgan Chase Bank.
The coordinator is Karla Garrett Harshaw, vice president of community development, Cox Ohio Publishing. Counselors may contact her for additional information at (937) 225-9869.
