BENGALS PREVIEW

Pats a tough test for reeling Bengals

Comment: What's your prediction for the Bengals-Pats game?

Monday, October 01, 2007

What you need to know about tonight's Bengals-Patriots game at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati:

Overview: Cincinnati faces a daunting task. In order to stop a two-game losing streak, it must defeat arguably the league's most complete team. The Patriots have scored in 31 straight quarters and lead the league with a plus-79 point differential (26.3 per game). The number 38 is wild because they've beaten the Jets (38-14), Chargers (38-14) and Bills (38-7). They've averaged 34.8 points in their past nine games, including the playoffs; have won six straight regular season games, dating to 2006; and are 14-3 (.823) in October since 2003.

Extras

Scouting the Bengals: The league's No. 2 passing attack (301.0 yards) — led by QB Carson Palmer and WRs Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh — could use a boost from the stagnant, 20th-ranked running game (92.0). TB Kenny Watson, who gets his first start in his fifth season as a Bengal, will try to provide a spark. The inconsistency of the defense and special teams has been especially costly.

Scouting the Patriots: They own the NFL's No. 1 offense (441.0 yards) and

No. 1 defense (207.0), and QB Tom Brady has the league's top passer rating (141.8), completing 79.5 percent of his passes with a 10-1 TD-to-INT ratio. Brady's weapons include TB Laurence Maroney, WRs Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Donte Stallworth, and TE Benjamin Watson. LB Adalius Thomas has 6.0 career sacks against the Bengals.

Numbers game: The Patriots lead the series, 12-8, but the Bengals lead, 6-5, as the home team. New England has won five of the past six, and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is 11-3 against Cincinnati. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is 0-2 against New England, including last season's 38-13 loss. The Bengals have a 9-17 Monday night record.

Injury report: Bengals — LB Rashad Jeanty (calf), FS Ethan Kilmer (knee), WR Tab Perry (hamstring) and TB Rudi Johnson (hamstring) are out; LBs Ahmad Brooks (groin) and Caleb Miller (back) are doubtful; LG Stacy Andrews (shoulder) is questionable. Patriots — OLB Rosevelt Colvin (ankle), TB Laurence Maroney (groin), RG Stephen Neal (shoulder), WRs Donte Stallworth (knee) and Kelley Washington (hamstring) and NT Vince Wilfork (shoulder) are questionable.

Outcome: The Bengals are due for a complete game, and the Patriots can't keep up their blistering pace. I smell upset. The final: Bengals 27, Patriots 24.

Its just a matter of time before Marvin Lewis runs the team into the ground just like they were in the 90’s. It’s fine by me, evict the team from Paul Brown and re-name it Nippert Stadium, give it to someone who deserves it - the UC Bearcats. Finally we have some football around here to be proud of.

Well another week of excuses, I for one am fed-up. Chad forget your celebrations after and get some points on the board, we’ll see that and appreciate you. Play as a team and you’ll win! play as primadonnas and you’ll not see w’s. Marvin talk to your team not us, we pay you play. and that is what it is all about

Been watching the Bengals since 1968. Always been a cheesy little flea market team with little talent and poor ownership. Now that the Pats have taken them to school, and after the bye week, the Bengals will have an easier schedule starting with Kansas City. They should be ok the rest of the season and end up at 10-6 and make the playoffs. They may win the first playoff game, but realistically, that’s as far as they’ll go.Worst case- 8-8 season- no playoffs.Fun the watch Palmer and Chaddly argue

gotto go but your right with your feeling about me. i don’t believe the ends justify the means. i feel we only will see the tip of the pats ice burge in regards to the pat methods of doing business. the league burnt the tapes (i feel)because the hole was to deep for the league.

By glo

Rules:

Let’s get something straight. The rule has nothing to do with “stealing” signals. Everyone is allowed to “steal” signals (and everyone does). Everyone is also allowed to videotape opposing coaches (and everyone does), so long as the videocamera is located within three walls and a ceiling (i.e the Owner’s Box). It’s a silly distinction, but one that the Pats ignored. The paid the price of being the best with this one. The media pounced and that’s all it’s about. “Cheating?” Pleeze

By Patrick

Jonoc-

Apparently you can’t read. I said it was against the rules, I said they got punished. Didn’t happen to read your response about the fact that the H.O.F. overcoat is class-less though. Or the fact that your team is a bunch of felons. Or the fact that tonight you are missing Rudi Johnson. Or the fact that your team defense is ranked 28th out of 32 teams. Those are facts, right? They aren’t in my way though. Whats that? Oh, you have no response? weird. Pats -48 Bungles -13

By glo

October 1, 2007 4:58 PM | Link to this

One last thing.

The Pats have always managed the game. Running up the score was never part of the gameplan.

Now, the media has called into the question the character and accomplishments of a great team. As a result, we shall all witness blowout city week in and week out.

It’s going to be fun to watch!!!

By jonoc

October 1, 2007 4:52 PM | Link to this

if it’s so easy and by the rules, then why didn’t the pats do it that way? only one in thirty two cities is this “no big deal”. it’s the one that lost a first round draft pick. don’t let fact slow down your argument.

By glo

October 1, 2007 4:51 PM | Link to this

Question: Would turning the heat up to 95 degrees in the Dome during the AFC Championship Game between the Pats/Colts constitute cheating? It’s equivalent of placing snowmaking machines on the sidelines in Gillette. Would the media at least grasp on to this as a lead story? Wake up people. The media and the NFL got what they wanted last year…a trophy for Manning. This year the media wants to dethrone the Pats Dynasty again. A first rounder isn’t going to get the job done.

By glo

October 1, 2007 4:42 PM | Link to this

Pats have the best O-Line & D-Line in the League…and the best QB…and the best coach…the receiving core isn’t too shabby either. You will all witness greatness again this evening. Keep an eye on the Pats pass protection…a thing of beauty.

I feel bad for those who cling to VideoGate as an excuse. Question to those naive fools. If nobody else is “stealing” signals, why does Herm Edwards have three coaches (1 real, two dummy) sending in defensive signals?

Wake up people. 38-17

By Patrick

October 1, 2007 4:41 PM | Link to this

Jonah-

Let me ask you this: Which is worse for the league image a coach who videotapes opposing coaches from the wrong part of the stadium, or a wide receiver on a 1-2 team that wears overcoats with “Hall of Fame 201?” on the back in between plays? ……..Thought so.

By Patrick

October 1, 2007 4:37 PM | Link to this

Jonac-

You are an idiot. Were you aware that you are actually allowed to video the opposing coaches, just not from field level? That means the NFL says its ok to tape the opposing teams play calls but you just have to do it from the coaches box. Did they break the rule? Yes. Were they punished? Yes. Move on. If that is all you have to hang your hat on then the Bengals must really stink. You haven’t mentioned how Palmer is going to do without your op 5 back Rudi Johnson

By bobby

October 1, 2007 4:34 PM | Link to this

I think that the Bengals will have a night to remember against the pats. Even though Rudi is out, we have watson. Watson is going to prove people wrong tonight. I know that the Bengals are better than what they have shown this season, and I think that they will prove that tonight. I pick the Bengals over the pats by 10. WHO DEY!!!!

By jonoc

If Cincy manages to pull off a win tonight all the bandwagoneers will be riding high once again. This has been a week of very unlikely upsets and I for one am hoping the trend continues tonight. I’d like to see Bengal fans circle the wagons and show some hometown pride. This is after all Monday night at home against The Evil Empire. Most importantly, I want to see the Bengals players do us proud and bring the hammer down on those bastards!

By Andrew haug

October 1, 2007 3:54 PM | Link to this

Some of you people are rather rediculous on your score predicting. Yes the patriots have a good offense but having Cincinnati score 7 and 10 points during the entire game. They have a very explosive offense as does New England and neither team has a great defense. The special teams advantage probably goes to New England as well. But the underdog always has a vital role in football and should never be estimated. If the Bengals can rally and use the underdog role they can win tonight!! C-45 P-42!

By Patomatic

October 1, 2007 3:49 PM | Link to this

So, so sad for all you non-Patriot fans. Hey, we were 1-15 once you too could improve!! Here’s how; first keep your boys on the field and out of jail, second play as a team, third realize the game has many facets, get good in all of them. And you may be right about the “plot” after all, how did Fox sports get the supposedly sealed tapes? could it be that Rogers wife works for Fox? Come on, anyone who ever played any game looks for an edge to win. The Broncos did it in 97 and 98….45-10 Pats

By Bill

October 1, 2007 3:07 PM | Link to this

Maroney will run around, over, and through the porrous Cincy run defense. Brady picks apart the porrous Cincy pass defense. (Notice a trend). Get used to it Bengal fans. Pats win 38-7

the pats are so over rated. they are nothing but a bunch of dirty cheaters. sure they have won their first 3 games 38-14. sure two of the teams were play off teams, but if 25 or 30 of their best plays had gone bad they could be 1-2 like us. now that they have to play the bengals on an even field…well…god help them.

I hate sounding like a typical homer yahoo, but unless the Bengals defense became “good” as opposed to “not good” this past week at practice the Pats are going to roll. Cincy has a chance if they play like they did against the Ravens. The Bengals need to score a couple of touchdown fast to change the game plan for New England. I’m a Patriots fan, but Cincy definitely has a chance to win this game. Should be a good game. Good Luck everyone!

By KP

October 1, 2007 12:15 PM | Link to this

I can’t believe the Bengals are 1-2, the game against the Browns should have been won by Cincy. But unless there is a complete collapse by New England….I am sad to say the Cincy has no chance winning this game…even if we play perfect football…Tom Brady & Co. will find a way to win this game…..last year we were blown out against Brady who had no receivers now he has Moss, Welkar, and Stallworth.

By dan

October 1, 2007 10:58 AM | Link to this

Nobody’s gonna jump off the Cincy wagon if they lose to NE. If they do, they weren’t fans to begin with. Everybody knew that this will be Cincy’s toughest game of the year, and the likeliest loss. Cincy’s post-season hopes certainly did not hinge upon winning this game. (The Cleveland game, however, did hurt a bit.) 1-3 is not an insurmountable deficit. We just need some players healed and we’ll get our wins down the stretch.

By dan

October 1, 2007 10:51 AM | Link to this

To “bob”: The Bengals are really 2-1. The refs botched the call on Hasselbeck’s catch-and-fumble on Seattle’s game winning drive. We get that call, we run out the clock and win.

By Andrew haug

October 1, 2007 10:22 AM | Link to this

Well it all boils down to this. The bengals have the talent they need to win any game. They really dont seem to live up their expectations in my opinion. They should in reality be 3-0 to this point and be talking about an upset. This will be a good game but I think they Bengals are due to win. WHO DEY!!

By cole

October 1, 2007 10:20 AM | Link to this

I think tonights game is going to be a blowout….the patriots are going to blow the bengals away….Randy Moss has had a great season so far with the 1st game having 183 yards the second game he had 105 yards and the third game he had 115 yards…49-28 pats are going to win

By Jason

October 1, 2007 10:15 AM | Link to this

I am a Bengal fan but come on if Cleveland can put up 51 on our sorry defense , what do you think New England is gonna do? My prediction Pats 63 Bengls 35, and Randy Moss will set single game receiving yards record against the worse secondary in the NFL.

By Jonah

October 1, 2007 9:36 AM | Link to this

I hope the Bengals play hard like they did in week 1, and score touchdowns instead of settling for field goals. Problem is, not only have they been terribly inconsistent, they have mounting injuries practically everywhere on the team. I agree that the Bengals tend to play to the level of their competition. Watson needs to run well, Palmer needs to be and on target, special teams REALLY need to pick up their game, and the defense needs to keep everything in front of them. Cinci 31,Pats 28? WHODEY

By Big C

October 1, 2007 9:13 AM | Link to this

Bengals need to get consistent pressure on Tom Brady. If this happens the Bengals will win. If not, it will be a battle of touchdowns with whoever has the ball last coming out on top. I predict that Kenny Watson will have a breakout game and will explode into the secondary with nearly every carry. Score prediction: Bengals 35 - Patriots 27.

By Don

October 1, 2007 9:07 AM | Link to this

Anybody is beatable. Bengals need to play perfect. You’re right Sue, hurting Brady would help. Bengals have to get to him first. Bengals are desparate at home in primetime. In the recent past they are undefeated in those scenarios. Patriots are due to come back to earth. It’s a tossup.

By Mike

October 1, 2007 9:05 AM | Link to this

Besides The Bengals having a 3-0 record in their hands only to p**s it away, they seem to play up or play down to their competition. I think tonights game will be fast and furious. Both offenses will be moving up and down the field, knowing this game relies on touchdowns not field goals. The Bengal defense will have to blitz Brady all game long to have a chance of stopping his offense. Palmer has to hit his wide open receivers instead of over throwing them by 10 yards. It’s game 4!

By William

October 1, 2007 9:00 AM | Link to this

I have been a Bengals fan since 1970. I hate to say this, but with the horrible special teams play, the questionable defense, and the sparodic play of the offense, I keep wondering if this is like 1992. I just cant see a Bengals victory here. If the Bengals win, I would be greatly surprised.

The Ravens turned the ball over 6 times…4 fumbles and 2 INTs…good luck winning a ball game like that…pretty tough to blame a call for the loss when your team plays like that…and “patsy schedule”…lmao…

There is a lot of people in here that do not like the bengals. I mean that is normal because everyone has their own opinions. The bottom line is the bengals are 1-2 and not doing so good this year so far. The defense as usual is the probable culprit. The patriots are good but you have to play mistake free and strive for the victory with them. The bengals have the offensive power to do it and we will see if the defense can stop one of the best wide out in the games today.

The Bengals are really 0-3 and will be 0-4 after tonight. That offensive pass interference against Todd Heap week #1 was as bad a call as an official has ever made. Simply put, the Bengals don’t have the patsy schedule like they had the one year in the past two decades that they had a winning record.
