Bengals running game vanishes out of picture
Sunday, September 14, 2008
CINCINNATI — Just when it looked as if tailback Chris Perry might produce his first career 100-yard rushing game, the Bengals' running game disappeared in a 24-7 loss to Tennessee. Now they're 0-2.
"I'm pretty sure some frustration is getting built up," Perry said. "But it's something you have to let go as soon as Wednesday comes around because you have to start practicing for the next team.
"I would be lying if I said there's not frustration. But it's not something that's going to dwell with us. We'll look at it on film, and then get rid of it."
Boos rain down
Of course, the Bengals players could hear the boos.
"It doesn't feel good," quarterback Carson Palmer said. "You just can't let it distract you. You can't let it affect your focus. You need to go out there and play, and I need to do a better job."
Utecht injured on offense's first play
Bengals tight end Ben Utecht suffered a chest injury on the first play from scrimmage.
Palmer's 5-yard pass over the middle bounced off Utecht's hands, and he crumpled to the ground. After being down for several minutes, Utecht was assisted off the field.
"We had a big game plan for him, and a big package," Palmer said. "It's something we were planning on using a lot. We had to adjust and try to make the best of it and move on."
Flags fly
Among the Bengals' five penalties for 35 yards: The defense had 12 men on the field; the offense had 12 men in the huddle; and Chad Ocho Cinco was hit with offensive holding.
"We're inconsistent and we're not getting the job done," right guard Bobbie Williams said. "We have to do better, plain and simple. There's not a whole lot of explaining. We put it out there on film and it's not pretty."
Short memory required for cornerback
Cornerback David Jones got beat in the front left corner of the end zone by the Titans' Justin Gage for an 11-yard TD.
"It was a mistake on my part," Jones said. "You've got to have a short memory playing corner. it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. You make a good play, you've got to forget about it. Same with a bad play."
Kick returner shows fleet feet
Glenn Holt's three kickoff returns for a 30.7-yard average was a positive.
"My blockers really help me out a lot," Holt said. "I tell 'em: 'I just read the block. Take 'em which way you want to take 'em and I'll read it.' "
Blocked punt
How did Keith Bullock block Kyle Larson's punt?
"I needed to one-step the ball and get it off, and I two-stepped it," Larson said.
Quote machine
"We're 0-2 and we're going to get to work, and we're going to go beat the New York Giants. That's all we can do. We're not going to sit here and whine about it. We lost the game. We didn't play good enough to win — point blank — so we didn't deserve to win. We're going to take the criticism and we're going to get it corrected. We're going to work better and get after it." — Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis.
