Bengals' defensive line wants sacks

CINCINNATI — How low can the Bengals go? All the way to the basement of the NFL in sacks.

They've accumulated the loneliest number — one.

Defensive ends Robert Geathers, Antwan Odom and Frostee Rucker plan to change that embarrassing "1" to a crooked number when they host Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 28.

"There's a sense of urgency," Rucker said. "We're going to get after the passer. That was on the (bulletin) board (Wednesday) morning for our major emphasis. We're going to get after it."

The Bengals faced Browns quarterback Derek Anderson twice in 2007 and sacked him only once for a 7-yard loss.

Anderson lit 'em up for five TD passes in a 51-45 Browns' victory at Cleveland in Week 2, but he crash-landed (2 TDs, 4 INTs, 1 sack) in Cincinnati as the Bengals got revenge, 19-14, in Game 15.

Odom claims the unit, which is still adjusting to new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's scheme, needs to "stop thinking so much and just go."

A free agent from the Titans, Odom has the team's only sack, which came against his former club. Tall, lean and quick, Odom's long arms enable him to get good extension against offensive tackles. But he needs to get quicker separation so he can use his speed to cash in more sacks.

"One ain't enough," Odom said. "We've got to get more pressure. We're thinking way too much. We need to relax and just go play — play like we practice. I've got a good feeling about this week. We're going to get a few more sacks."

It's a great game to get started because Anderson's confidence is shaken. He's viewed as a lame duck with Brady Quinn preparing to take over.

"We just have to have that mentality that we're going to get to the quarterback more consistently, and just focus in on it as a group up front," Geathers said. "It won't be one sack after Sunday."
