Dayton Flyers inch closer to top 25

UD plays Alabama, No. 17 St. Mary’s this week

The Dayton Flyers remain on the brink of the top 25 in the second Associated Press poll of the season.

UD has the most votes of any team not in the top 25, ranking just a few votes below No. 25 California and a couple ahead of Maryland. The Flyers were 27th in the preseason poll.

Dayton won its season opener 96-68 over Austin Peay on Friday at UD Arena and plays Alabama (1-0) at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN2 at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Alabama beat Coastal Carolina 70-53 in its opener Friday.

Dayton plays No. 17 St. Mary’s (1-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena. St. Mary’s beat Nevada 81-63 in its opener Friday.

Alabama did not receive votes for the top 25.

Duke, Kentucky, Villanova, Oregon and North Carolina make up the top five. Xavier fell from No. 7 to No. 11. Rhode Island moves from No. 23 to No. 21. Cincinnati moved into the poll at No. 24.
