Dunbar High School could have a head football coach in place by the next Dayton Public Schools board meeting Tuesday.

Superintendent Rhonda Corr wouldn’t commit at last Friday’s mostly executive-session board meeting to who she’ll recommend, citing additional human resources steps that needed to be fulfilled.

Board member Joe Lacey asked Corr last Friday if she were planning on recommending Darran Powell to retain that position on Tuesday. After Corr wouldn’t commit, Lacey requested if Corr plans to recommend Powell, to also request Powell be present at the meeting so board members could question him if desired.

Lacey previously voted against rehiring Powell. When contacted this week Powell said he’s planning to attend Tuesday’s board meeting.

Powell initially was denied retaining the position by a board vote. James Lacking, who Powell succeeded as Dunbar's head coach, was the No. 2 candidate, but declined to accept the position when offered last week.

The Dunbar coaching staff from last season has continued to oversee summer workouts. The preseason begins on Monday, July 31.

Late last month the board approved retaining Dayton City League head football coaches Earl White (Belmont), Jim Place (Ponitz) and Brian Carter (Thurgood Marshall). Len Hampton Jr. was approved to succeed John Wortham as Meadowdale’s football coach. Stivers does not have a football program.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association placed all DPS boys and girls athletic programs on a three-year probation and fined the district $10,000 last spring. That was a result of Dunbar coaches accusing DPS director of athletics Mark Baker of suggesting Dunbar should lose to Belmont in a Week 10 game last season. By doing so, it was hoped both teams would qualify for the postseason and an academically ineligible Dunbar player wouldn't have to be reported.

• Powell confirmed former Dunbar football player Ahman Wallace was the fatal victim of a hit-and-run last Saturday in Dayton. Wallace and friend Kirby Shoffner were crossing North Main Street when a northbound auto hit Wallace near Shadyside Drive and didn’t stop.
