Fairborn inducts second HOF class

Fairborn High School inducted four individuals and the 1965 Western Ohio League football championship team into its athletic hall of fame this past Saturday.

New inductees are Jason Piercey (Class of 2003, swimming); Rick Musick (’75, cross country and track and field); Steve Greene (’70, basketball and tennis) and Gary Wright (’70, basketball, baseball and track and field).

The 1965 Fairborn Flyers football team was 7-3 overall and 6-1 in the league, which was good for its only WOL title.

The new inductees were introduced prior to the start of a boys basketball game against visiting Valley View. It was only the second class to be inducted into Fairborn’s athletic hall of fame. Nomination forms for next year’s induction are posted on the school’s sebsite.

• A couple of notable achievements highlighted Miami Valley’s 73-36 defeat of Xenia Christian in a girls basketball Metro Buckeye Conference showdown last week. Tia Karras hit nine 3-pointers for the host Rams and scored 31 points. Also, Xenia’s Katie Riddle surpassed 1,000 career points.

A 5-foot-8 junior and Miami Valley’s leading scorer, Karras is tied for 14th with many others who connected for at least nine 3’s in a game, according to Ohio High School Athletic Association stats. The leader is Marlese Stollings of Beaver Eastern with 13 in 1992. Tied for second is Trischa Lacy of Urbana with 12 in 2012.

Miami Valley (12-2) leads the MBC at 5-0 and took a 33-game MBC win streak that began in 2012 to Yellow Springs on Monday. Xenia Christian (11-3) is alone in second in the conference (4-2) and is at Carlisle today.

• Fairmont’s Riley Vanderkaay and Luke West and Brett Wedding of Oakwood are in the running for a Chick Evans Scholarship. All three seniors participated in a final round of interviews at Scioto Country Club in Upper Arlington last week.

The Evans Scholars Foundation is supported by the Western Golf Association and has been a caddie scholarship program since 1930. Full tuition and housing is offered to those who are selected. The foundation reports that 910 caddies are currently enrolled in 19 colleges as Evans Scholars throughout the country.

Moraine Country Club is sponsoring Vanderkaay and West. Dayton Country Club is sponsoring Wedding.

• Four players on the Vandalia-Butler football team have been named Academic All-Ohio for the 2015 season: seniors Noah Ballard, Chandler Craine, Vinnie Fiori and Dustin Lewis. To be eligible, players must be first-team all-conference and maintain a 3.6 GPA. The teams are chosen by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

• Bellbrook is in need of a varsity head football coach and girls varsity head tennis coach. The Golden Eagles’ football position opened when Kevin Basinger resigned following last season. Contact the school for more information.

• Coldwater native and teacher Mark Bruns is the Cavaliers’ new varsity track and field coach. He succeeds Palngji Goshit, who resigned to accept an assistant track coaching position at Wright State University.
