Springboro races to big early lead, tops Tipp in Flyin’ girls game

Springboro raced to decisive early advantage and stunned Tippecanoe 57-38 in a girls high school basketball game during Saturday’s opener of the 16th Annual Premier Health Flyin’ to the Hoop at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.

Jordan Diehl scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds and Rachel Gillum added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers, who led 18-2 after the first quarter. Allison Mader led Tipp with 10 points.

Just the second girls matchup in Flyin’ history, the game paired two of the area’s best programs in Springboro (10-3) of the GWOC National West and Tipp (11-2) of the GWOC American North. Springboro has consistently been among the area’s best Division I programs. Tipp was beaten in the D-II regional finals the last two seasons by eventual state champ Alter. The Red Devils had a 10-game win streak snapped at Versailles, 54-53.

Alter defeated Cleveland St. Joseph Academy 54-36 in the Flyin’ girls debut last year.

At halftime, Tipp senior Mader was presented the second annual Flyin’ to the Hoop Scholarship that is sponsored by River Valley Credit Union. Mader averages 15.4 points and has signed with Cedarville University to play basketball.
