Former Middletown High School football coach Jack Gordon dead at 85

Hamilton High grad was ‘Voice of Middies’ on WPFB Radio after lengthy coaching career

Jack Gordon, a 1949 Hamilton High School graduate and longtime football coach at Middletown, died Saturday at the age of 85.

Gordon had been in deteriorating health for some time and passed away at Hospice Care of Butler and Warren Counties.

He played football at the University of Cincinnati and was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, but chose to coach and teach. He coached for one year at North College Hill and five years at Lima before beginning an 18-year head coaching career at Middletown.

“He leaves a legacy of excellence not only in Middie athletics but also across the entire state of Ohio,” said Greater Miami Conference president Stu Eversole, a former football coach and athletic director at Lakota, via e-mail. “Jack was without question an outstanding coach and leader of young men. His positive ‘ripple effect’ will go on for generations.”

Gordon, who later became the Voice of the Middies on WPFB radio, coached 11 All-Ohio players at Middletown.
