From the archives: Bengals are born, UD rocks UC, Big O’s holdout and more

Here are five fun facts from 50 years ago this week in the Dayton Daily News sports section:

1. The week began with Dayton celebrating a 27-13 victory over the University of Cincinnati.

Coached by John McVay (grandfather of current Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay), the Flyers used a powerful double-wing attack to crush the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium in what was to be the last meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.

They took great pride in the victory, too, not worrying about rubbing salt in UC's wounds when it was over.

2. There was better news for football in the Queen City later in the week, however, as Paul Brown and his financiers were officially awarded a franchise in the American Football League.

They knew the team would play in Cincinnati, but no one was quite sure at first what they would be called.

3. "Pfft Went Whole Year for Wrecked Browns" read a headline one day after Cleveland was beaten by the Detroit Lions.

The grim outlook was in part because of a season-ending injury to star Gary Collins. Among the notable plays was a LeRoy Kelly fumble deep in Lions territory recovered by Detroit defensive back Dick LeBeau.

4. Ohio State was preparing for its first game of the season, and Woody Hayes wasn't sure what he was going to get from his young backfield.

Quarterback Bill Long, a Stebbins grad, was nursing a sore hamstring, while fullback Jim Otis of Celina was set to step into the lineup at the most important position in Hayes' offense.

Billy Anders, a Sabina native, was among the players named captain for the Buckeyes, who would open the season against Arizona.

5. Finally there was big news as the NBA season's beginning neared: Cincinnati Royals star Oscar Robertson was threatening to hold out if he wasn't granted a $100,000 contract.

That would put The Big O in the same salary stratosphere with Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond and rookie Bill Bradley.
