Hamilton High grad could make NFL debut vs. Bengals

Hamilton High graduate Adam Pankey started at three different positions during his career at West Virginia, and that versatility was one of big reasons why the Green Bay Packers signed him as undrafted free agent.

“He’s a heck of an athlete and he’s done a good job for us,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “He’s got a lot of growth in front of him. It’s like any young offensive lineman, if you’re going to get up on the 53, you have to be able to play multiple positions if you’re not a starter. That’s really the vehicle to be part of the 46.”

Pankey was part of the final cuts on Sept. 2, but the Packers brought him back on the practice squad the following day.

Then with the offensive line ravished by injuries, the team promoted Pankey to the 53-man roster last Wednesday and he was active Sunday for the 34-23 loss at Atlanta, although he did not play.

If Pankey is active again Sunday, he will have a chance to make his NFL debut against his hometown team when the Cincinnati Bengals visit Lambeau Field.

Green Bay starting tackles Bryan Bulaga (ankle) and David Bakhtiari (hamstring) were inactive Sunday, and McCarthy said it’s still too early in the week to know if they’ll be able to go Sunday.

“(We’re” going to practice here in an hour and find out where in the hell we’re at injury wise,” he said. “We’re going to have a bunch of guys on the injury list. We’re going down there with 13 guys going into the rehab program and hopefully working into the practice structure.”
