High school highlights for Aug. 16

Boys Soccer

Wayne 2, Tippecanoe 1: Wayne's Ryan Breslin and Nathan Keyes scored goals as the Warriors topped Tippecanoe for the first time since 2008, avenging last year's season-opening loss to the Red Devils. Collin Tateman scored the lone goal for Tipp.

Mason 6, Springboro 0: The defending Division I champion Comets blanked visiting Springboro. Sophomore Joseph Grimes scored his first two varsity goals.

Middletown 2, Miamisburg 1: Reid Abney assisted Cole Smith on Middletown's first goal, and the duo switched roles for the game-winner with 12 minutes left. Miamisburg's lone tally came from Kip Schenck on an assist from Murrie Affini.

Newton 6, Greenville 2: Jonny White and Levi Armentrout scored two goals each.

Girls Soccer

Milton-Union 4, Dayton Christian 2: Milton-Union's Danielle McFarland broke a 2-2 halftime score with a pair of second half goals. McFarland finished with three total goals as the Bulldogs won their season opener.

West Carrollton 3, Stivers 1: Caitlin Beck had a pair of goals, and Belle Hartman added the other for the Pirates.

Vandalia Butler 2, CJ 2: Sophomore Brittney Petrosky gave the host Aviators a 1-0 lead at the half. Petrosky added her second goal with an assist from Tia Manier early in the second half. However, the Eagles added two late goals from Taylor Burrows and Logan Dix to secure the tie.

Tippecanoe 5, Wayne 0: Holly Bernhold scored two goals and goalkeeper Claire Hinkle posted the shutout for the Red Devils.

Girls Volleyball

Spikeoff Invitational: Coldwater hosted the 6th Annual Spikeoff Invitational and came out as the victors, defeating St. Henry 25-13 and 25-18 in the championship. The Cavaliers knocked off St. Marys and Ottawa Glandorf to reach the finals. St. Henry beat Miami East and Fort Loramie on its path to the title match.

Girls Tennis

Schroeder Invitational: Milton-Union and Celina tied with a score of 31 to share overall team honors at the Schroeder Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs got a win from Ashley Wombold in the third singles final. Sisters Jillian and Carli Milano of Carroll won the first and second singles championship matches, respectively, as the Patriots finished third with a score of 29.

CJ Invitational: Chaminade Julienne and Columbus Academy tied for first place overall. The Eagles' junior Natalie Allen won the second singles title, and sophomore Brianna Douglas won at third singles. Columbus Academy won the first singles and second doubles championship matches. Mikaela Hindenlang and Jada Strickland of Miamisburg paired up to win the first doubles crown.
