Hofstra beats Dayton with free throws down the stretch

Anthony Grant explains why he didn’t play Josh Cunningham in last 9:56

Coach Anthony Grant made his last substitution with just over five minutes to play Thursday. From that point forward, the Dayton Flyers stuck with Jalen Crutcher, Trey Landers, Xeyrius Williams, Darrell Davis and Kostas Antetokounmpo.

That group almost got the job done, but ultimately, the Flyers lost 72-69 to Hofstra in the first round of the Charleston Classic at TD Bank Arena with two of their veteran players, Josh Cunningham and John Crosby, on the bench in the final minutes. It was the first loss for Grant as Dayton coach.

“We just felt like they were in a good rhythm both offensively and defensively,” Grant said. “They were clicking pretty well. We just decided to stay with them. We had some foul trouble with some guys. I just felt that group was playing well, so we decided to finish the game out with them.”

Cunningham scored 22 points and hit the game-winning shot in the season-opening 78-77 victory against Ball State but was limited to seven points in 14 minutes in the second game. He picked up his fourth foul with 9:56 left in the game and didn’t return to the game.

“I was worried because he wasn’t in a rhythm,” Grant said. ” Kostas was playing well. I thought we needed shooting on the floor at some of the other spots. We went big a little bit. I thought that helped us. I thought we needed shooting on the floor with the way they were playing zone. It was a decision we felt at the time was the best decision for us.”

Antetokounmpo had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in 26 minutes. While Dayton (1-1) held Hofstra (3-0) without a field goal for the last six minutes, the Pride made 9 of 11 free throws in that span.
