Jay Gruden fired up about son's first career point

Washington Redskins coach excited to see Joey Gruden score Tuesday for Dayton Flyers.

Joey Gruden still trails Dayton’s greatest walk-on player (or walk-on turned scholarship player) Bobby Wehrli by 85 points in UD record books, but he got on the board for the first time Tuesday.

Gruden, a walk-on senior guard, scored his first career point with one minute to go in a 91-59 victory over Saint Joseph’s College, making 1 of 2 free throws for the Dayton Flyers’ final point.

Dayton fan Tom Hirt took a photo of Gruden at the line and then discovered Thursday that photo is being used by Gruden’s dad, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden, as the screen saver on his phone.

Alex Parker, director of sports for ABC 7 and News Channel 8 in Washington, D.C., interviewed Jay Gruden about his son on Thursday.

“We’re fired up,” Gruden said. “He’s fired up. He missed the first one, and he said his knees were shaking on the second one. But we’re excited.”

Dayton’s student managers interviewed Joey in a short video posted to their Twitter account.

“Joey, how is life as a college scorer,” they asked.

“Same old,” Joey said. “The only thing different is my Twitter blew up a little bit.”
